  • Patent number: 6018874
Abstract: A sleeve for surrounding a power cord, in whole or in part, for apparatuses such as hedge trimmers. The sleeve, preferably composed of a lightweight polymeric material in expanded, corrugated or similar form, has relatively large radial dimensions compared to the cord and therefore resists the insertion of the sleeve and the cord into apparatuses (such as a hedge trimmer's cutting blades) thereby preventing damage to the sleeve and the cord and preventing other undesired results. In addition, the relatively large size of the sleeve tends to increase the user's awareness of the sleeve and cord. Also the sleeve's increased rigidity compared to the cord aids in preventing the cord from being entangled in the apparatus and assists in managing and manipulating the cord. The sleeve is also lightweight and flexible enough so as not to constrain the intended function of the cord.

  • Patent number: 6018878
Abstract: Detection of angles associated with wheel alignment of a vehicle can be carried out properly at all times according to the present wheel alignment examining apparatus irrespective of the size of a wheel to be examined. The present apparatus includes a sensor member (105, 106) pressed against a side surface of a wheel (11) to be examined and thus the sensor member rotates together with the wheel to be examined. Various inclination angles, such as toe, camber, caster and king pin angles, are detected from a displacement of the sensor member during its rotation. Use may be made of either a Cardan suspension mechanism or link mechanism for supporting the sensor member. When use is made of a link mechanism, toe and camber angles can be detected by the same encoder.

  • Patent number: 6018881
Abstract: A position measuring system that includes a scale graduation and a scanning element, wherein the scanning element moves relative to the scale graduation along a measurement direction so as to generate position-dependent, intensity-modulated output signals. The scanning element includes a dynamic characteristic, which has saturation areas adjoining both sides of an at least partially approximately linear operating area, in which no significantly changed output signal results any more, even when the input signal changes. The scanning gap (d) between the scale graduation and the scanning element is selected in such a way that as the scanning element moves over its entire measurement range a modulation between maximum input signals, which are located in the saturation areas of the dynamic characteristic, takes place.
