Abstract: A tool for brake spring maintenance provides the ability both to release brake springs and then hold them out of the way for removal and replacement of brake shoes or for other maintenance operations related to drum brake arrangements. A main support bar is adapted to be received on an exposed wheel mounting member. The bar has a pair of threaded pins and cooperating threaded nuts for controlled axial movement of the pins. The pins have hooked ends and are situated for engaging respective brake springs whenever the tool is properly positioned on the exposed wheel mounting member. By rotating the threaded nuts to move the pins a set axial distance with the pin hooked ends engaged with the brake springs, such springs can be drawn back from their hold on the brake shoes, to permit disassembly and maintenance of the entire drum brake arrangement.

  • Patent number: 6044538
Abstract: A simple joining process for members of passive microwave structures is described which reduces passive intermodulation. The process forms an aperture in a first member and forms a second member to have dimension which exceeds the aperture dimension by a dimension differential. The members are joined by initially causing them to have a temperature differential that is sufficient to permit the second member to be positioned across the aperture. The dimension differential is selected to generate mutually-induced radial stresses in the members, after the temperature differential is removed, which enhance the metal-to-metal contact between the members and, thereby, improve passive intermodulation (PIM) performance. Preferably, the dimension differential is selected to cause the second member to elastically buckle and exert a buckling stress against the first member. Additional interface structures are provided to resist operational axial forces, e.g., vibration, that tend to dislodge the members.

  • Patent number: 6044539
Abstract: A method is shown for installing a pipe gasket within the bell end of a pipe section. The bell end is oriented along a horizontal work axis. The annular gasket is inserted within the mouth opening of the bell end of the pipe. The gasket is oriented at an oblique angle with respect to the horizontal axis, whereby a leading edge of the annular gasket moves past the annular groove provided in the bell end and a trailing edge of the gasket engages the annular groove. A retracting force is exerted on the gasket by pulling the leading edge backwards in the direction of the mouth opening of the bell end of the pipe until the gasket snaps into a lock-in position within the annular groove. The gasket body has an embedded relatively rigid ring which is precisely located to ensure that the gasket, once in snap-fit position, is securely retained within the gasket groove and cannot be displaced.

  • Patent number: 6044541
Abstract: A bimetallic coin or blank is produced from a disc-shaped core and an annular outer component. The metal alloy material of the core is relatively harder than the metal alloy material of the outer member. The two components are bonded to each other by pressure flow of the material of the core toward and into the inner edge of the outer member. According to the invention, the peripheral edge of the core is shaped or nosed such that it extends radially outwardly. During minting, the pressure of the dies causes the material of the core to flow radially outwardly, thus causing the shaped peripheral edge of the core to penetrate into the softer material of the outer member's inner edge and, thereby, form a tongue and groove connection which resists relative axial and rotational movement between the outer member and the core. The shaping of the core also facilitates the fast speed placement of the core into the ring during the minting operation.

  • Patent number: 6044543
Abstract: The invention concerns a method of manufacturing a joint housing, in particular for vehicle track rods, having an integral shaft with an internal thread designed to hold a longitudinal pin, the housing being produced from a blank with a ball-like enlargement at one end. In order to ensure low manufacturing costs and low consumption of energy and materials, a longitudinal cavity with a diameter exceeding that of the internal thread and a length exceeding that of the threaded section is first produced in the shaft of the blank by rearwards cup extrusion and the diameter of the threaded section subsequently reduced to that of the thread core while at the same time shaping the surface of the wall to give a flat key face, the overall process being a cold-forming one. Finally, both the external and internal features of the housing are produced by heading, cupping, punching and forming to size perpendicular to the longitudinal axis in the region of the enlargement.

  • Patent number: 6044544
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for retaining parallels against vise jaws during the entire cycle of performing a machining operation. The subject method and apparatus apply sufficient forces at the places and angles necessary to avoid any flutter or movement of the parallels outwardly away from or transversely across the faces of their respective jaws. By use of the subject invention, the parallels are retained against the jaws of the vise over a range of jaw gaps from a very narrow gap to the maximum jaw gap of vises typically used in machine shops. Also, undesirable movement of the retaining apparatus relative to the vise and parallels is restricted. The apparatus has a low profile and is located in the space under the machining area so that it does not interfere with the machining operations, but if contacted by the machine tool, will be sacrificed rather than the more expensive tool.
