Abstract: A ventilated cage and rack system which maximizes cage density within the rack is provided. The rack includes at least one air exhaust plenum, and at least one canopy disposed within the rack. The canopy is capable of supporting a first cage within the rack above the canopy, and also positioning a second cage below the canopy so as to maintain a gap between the top of the second cage and the canopy to permit air to be drawn into the air exhaust plenum from the interior of the second cage through the top of the second cage and to also permit ambient air to be drawn across the top of the second cage into the air exhaust plenum.

  • Patent number: 6158389
Abstract: This invention is a sprint exercise training system and method suitable for a variety of animals, including horses, dogs and humans, to apply a restraining force during training to condition an animal to run faster. An exercise path (19) is defined by a single elevated monorail (20). The monorail (20) slidably carries a restraining assembly for providing a force opposing, and generally aligned opposite, an animal's direction of movement along an exercise path. A harness (12, 16) transfers the restraining force via a single tether (5) from the restraining assembly to the moving animal. An animal using the present invention may be conditioned to run faster when not subjected to a restraining force.

  • Patent number: 6158390
Abstract: A pet ball which is formed from two (2) hollow semi-spherical half members and which is readily mobile along a hard surface, for example the ground. A weight, for example, a fishing sinker, is suspended within the pet ball. The weight is suspended by an elastic member, for example, an elastic rubber band, which is attached to the inside wall of the pet ball. The weight can be attached to the elastic member in such a manner that it can move along the elastic member or it can be fixed at a stationary position along the elastic member to create different desired effects. When a force is applied to the pet ball, it will roll. With the weight being suspended from the elastic member, the center of gravity of the pet ball changes as the pet ball rolls, thus resulting in erratic movement or a path which follows no definite or consistent direction or pattern.

  • Patent number: 6158391
Abstract: A treat dispensing toy including a middle portion and pair of spaced disk portions of differing diameters, which are fixed to the middle portion. The toy is structured to enable treats or snacks to be dispensed from an interior chamber when an animal causes the toy to roll and rotate one or more revolutions. The disk portions may be removably fixed to the middle portion to facilitate filling and cleaning activities of the interior chamber, which is formed by the disk portions and a wall structure of the middle portion. The wall structure of the middle portion includes a treat dispensing opening to dispense treats in a controlled manner. The toy is intended to dispense treats, while engaging and entertaining an animal, and at the same time is arranged to maintain position within an inherently restricted play or holding area.

Abstract: The invention concerns a device for prohibiting the crossing of a zone boundary by an animal (2,4). This device comprises interactive means (12, 14) for locating the animal (2, 4) with respect to a control station (8), means for sanctioning (16) the use of which is dependent on means (66, 50, 52, 54) for processing and analyzing data supplied by said locating means (12, 140. The sanctioning means (16) are means for fogging a fluid, comprising an electrovalve; the actuating of the electrovalve varies in frequency, in duration and in delivery according to the distance separating the animal from the control station and the duration of the presence of the animal in the zone to be protected.

  • Patent number: 6158397
Abstract: In order to reduce the soot content of a diesel engine's exhaust gas, a fluid containing a peroxide compound, preferably an aqueous hydrogen peroxide solution, is fed into the combustion chamber after the start of the injection and combustion of the fuel, preferably following the combustion phase. The diesel fuel is preferably injected in the range 10.degree..+-.5.degree. before top dead center and the fluid containing the peroxide compound is fed in the range 5.degree. to 30.degree. after top dead center. Use may be made for the alternate supply of diesel fuel and hydrogen peroxide of a shared injection nozzle (FIG. 1) which supplies one or other of the media depending on the pressure of the diesel fuel and hydrogen peroxide solution supplied.

  • Patent number: 6158398
Abstract: A dual circuit cooling system for a vehicle having an engine and a turbocharger aftercooler includes a modular radiator system having partitions in the tanks of the radiator. The partitions create separate radiator sections, and the partitions contain orifices that provide a crossover function between the sections. During cooler engine operating temperatures the engine thermostat closes which causes engine coolant to be circulated mainly within the engine, and which also causes pressure downstream of the thermostat to drop. The reduced pressure allows coolant from the aftercooler circuit to pass through a first crossover and circulate through the main radiator, then through a second crossover and back to the aftercooler circuit. During higher engine temperatures the thermostat opens, equalizing pressure between the circuits, thus creating normal flow through the circuits.

  • Patent number: 6158399
Abstract: An engine cooling system includes a two-pass radiator, a jacket water pump pumping coolant from the radiator to the engine, and an aftercooler for cooling engine charge air from a turbocharger. An aftercooler pump pumps coolant from the radiator to the aftercooler. An orifice can be disposed in the aftercooler discharge line to limit flow therethrough, and an orifice bypass line with thermostatic control valve can be provided to selectively bypass the orifice. A shunt tank is connected to the suction of the jacket water pump to establish a static pressure head thereon, to ensure that the jacket water pump has sufficient suction pressure despite relatively high coolant head loss through the two-pass radiator.

  • Patent number: 6158401
Abstract: A method of operating a free piston engine of the present invention provides a piston including a piston head reciprocally disposed within a combustion cylinder, a plunger head reciprocally disposed within a hydraulic cylinder, and a plunger rod interconnecting the piston head with the plunger head. The plunger head and the hydraulic cylinder define a variable volume pressure chamber on a side of the plunger head generally opposite the plunger rod. A supply of hydraulic fluid is pulsed from a high pressure hydraulic accumulator into the pressure chamber during a beginning portion of a compression stroke to cause the piston head to move toward a top dead center position. The high pressure hydraulic accumulator is then decoupled from the pressure chamber.
