Abstract: A laser beam emitted from a semiconductor laser enters an incident surface of a transparent condensing medium with a central part of the laser beam being shielded by a shading metal member, and a light spot is formed on a light-condensed surface of the transparent condensing medium. When this light spot is applied to a micro metal member, plasmon of the micro metal member is excited, and near field light leaks out therefrom. The near field light enters a recording medium of a disk as propagation light, and record into and and reproduction from the recording medium is performed by this light. By shielding the central part of the laser beam, it is possible to prevent the propagation light from being generated from the light-condensed surface of the transparent condensing medium, and to prevent erroneous reproduction caused by the propagation light.

Abstract: A system and method for encoding and transmitting data with a spread-spectrum packet-switched system. Data to be transmitted by a packet transmitter are encoded for privacy and to restrict intelligent receipt of the data to the intended recipient. The encoded data is demultiplexed into sub-data-sequence signals which are spread-spectrum processed and then combined as a multichannel spread-spectrum signal. The multichannel spread-spectrum signal is concatenated with a header to output a packet-spread-spectrum signal which is transmitted over radio waves to a packet receiver. The packet receiver obtains timing for the multichannel spread-spectrum signal from the header. The multichannel spread-spectrum signal is then despread and multiplexed as received-encoded data. The received-encoded data is decoded by the intended recipient and stored in a receiver memory for output.

Abstract: A digital data packet transmission process and system provides more efficient and higher quality of service in applications such as Internet telephony. In one aspect of this approach, transmission control protocol (“TCP”) is used to send data from a first user or client over standard telephone lines to a local Internet service provider (“ISP”). At the ISP, the data packets are converted from TCP to user datagram protocol (“UDP”). The UDP packets are then transmitted, typically over a higher bandwidth link to another local ISP serving the recipient. The UDP packets are translated back to TCP packets and routed to the receiver. Because many existing systems currently employ UDP packets, the present approach is largely backwards compatible should a recipient be hooked up to an ISP that does not employ a TCP/UDP converter. A bidirectional TCP/UDP converter is preferable for two way communication such as Internet telephony.

Abstract: Bits of a first bit sequence are rearranged in a first matrix according to a predetermined arrangement rule. The first bit sequence represents information being a base of a key. Blocks are formed in the first matrix. Each of the blocks has bits, the number of which is smaller than the number of bits composing the first matrix. Logical operation is executed among bits in each of the blocks, and a bit being a result of the logical operation is generated. The logical-operation-result bits are combined into a second bit sequence. The number of bits composing the second bit sequence is smaller than the number of bits composing the first bit sequence. There is a second matrix composed of predetermined third bit sequences. The second matrix is accessed and one is read out from among the third bit sequences in response to the second bit sequence. The read-out third bit sequence is outputted as information representative of the key.

Abstract: An information processor that receives information that is distributed from an external information source and that stores and uses said distributed information comprises a unique information storage means, an encryption means, and a decoding means. The unique information storage means stores unique information that is not duplicated in devices other than a predesignated information processor. The encryption means encrypts the received distributed information using the unique information as an encryption key. The decoding means decodes data that have been encrypted by the encryption means with unique information that corresponds to the encryption key as the decoding key. The unique information storage means can be constituted as a read-only storage medium that permits only reading of the unique information that has been stored. The encryption key and the decoding key may be identical. The information processor is further provided with a storage device for storing data that have been encrypted.

In the transmission side, a communication key is used for enciphering data to be transmitted, and in the reception side the same communication key as in the transmission side is used for decoding received data. In the transmission side, an individual key that is different from the communication key is used for enciphering the data to be transmitted, the enciphered data are decoded by using the individual key first, and then the decoded data are enciphered by using the communication key so that the enciphered file can be transmitted.

Abstract: Image-dependent tone and color reproduction processing of digital images is accomplished by creating a spatially blurred and sub-sampled version of the original image, and applying knowledge of the capture device physical characteristics to obtain statistics related to the scene or original captured. The statistics are used for image-dependent linearization of the captured image data based on an OECF model, and in conjunction with information about the output medium, to calculate image-specific preferred tone reproduction curves based on a preferred reproduction model. These curves may be applied to the red, green, and blue channels of RGB-type images to produce preferred tone and color reproduction, or to the luminance channel of luminance-chrominance type images to produce preferred tone reproduction. Alternately, the linearized image data may be reproduced directly.
