Abstract: In steps S25 to S42, in order to activate an inactive catalyst earlier, the air-fuel ratio in a combustion chamber is set to be &lgr;≈1 during a period T1 after engine start until catalyst light-off at around 50% HC purifying ratio immediately after the HC purifying ratio begins to rapidly rise, before the catalyst warms up, divisional injection is made at least during the period T1 required until light-off is reached, and a swirl is weakened during the period T1 compared to a latter period which follows this period T1. The divisional injection is made and the swirl is strengthened even during the latter period.

Abstract: A device for catalytic removal of a pollutant from an exhaust gas of a combustion system, particularly, a fossil-fired power plant or an internal combustion engine, includes an exhaust-gas duct for carrying exhaust gas, a reagent, a muffler having an injection space and a mixing space for mixing the reagent with the exhaust gas, an injection device for introducing the reagent into the exhaust gas in the injection space, at least one catalytic converter disposed in the exhaust-gas duct, and mixers disposed at least one of before and after the injection space with respect to a direction of flow of the exhaust gas. The mixers define a distance therebetween, and the distance is matched to a frequency of sound to be damped in the exhaust gas. According to the invention, the injection chamber and the downstream mixture chamber are embodied as a muffler in order to reduce the emissions of sound while enabling the production of a device having a compact structure.

A transparent cylinder (3) is inserted in a cylindrical-shaped vessel (1), and a columnar-shaped heating lamp (5) is inserted in the transparent cylinder (3). A fluid desired to be temperature controlled is made to flow in a passage (25) between the vessel (1) and the transparent cylinder (3). Joined to an outer peripheral surface of the vessel (1) is a thermoelectric conversion element (7), to an outer surface of which is joined a cooling pipe (9). A cooling liquid is made to flow in the cooling pipe (9). Fluid heating is effected by the heating lamp (5). Fluid cooling is effected by the cooling liquid and the thermoelectric conversion element (7) forcedly absorbs heat from the fluid and discharges heat to the cooling liquid to thereby cool the fluid rapidly and cool the fluid to a temperature lower than that of the cooling liquid.

In order to reduce the mechanical stresses on the pipe device, at least two components of the structure among the support devices and the pipe device are made of different materials having an expansion coefficient and/or a thermal conductivity coefficient which are different so that when the plant goes from inactivity at ambient temperature to steady-state operation the variations in length of the components made of different materials are concomitant. Refrigerant supplied from a compressor flows into the valve chamber through a passage 22, passes between a valve means 42 and a valve seat 23, and travels toward an evaporator through a passage 24. Refrigerant returning from the evaporator enters the body 10 through a passage 26, and after the refrigerant temperature information is transmitted to the operating shaft 40, the refrigerant flows out through a passage 28 toward the compressor. Passages 22 and 28 open to a first side surface of the body, and passages 24 and 26 open to a second side surface orthogonal to the first surface. • Publication number: 20010018834
Abstract: A process for producing synthetic quartz glass using a burner composed of a plurality of concentric nozzles involves the steps of feeding a silica-forming raw material gas and a fluorine compound gas to a reaction zone from a center nozzle, feeding oxygen gas from a second nozzle outside the center nozzle, and feeding oxygen gas and/or hydrogen gas from a third nozzle. The silica-forming raw material gas is hydrolyzed to form fine particles of silica, which particles are deposited on a rotatable substrate so as to form a porous silica matrix, which is then fused to give the quartz glass. The flow rate of the oxygen gas fed from the second nozzle and the flow rate of the raw material gas are controlled so as to provide a 1.1- to 3.5-fold stoichiometric excess of oxygen. The excess oxygen suppresses Si—Si bond formation in the quartz glass, enabling the production of synthetic quartz glass having a high transmittance in the vacuum ultraviolet region.

Abstract: Elements with heads confronting each other are blanked out of two opposite sides of an elongate metal sheet. The differences between thicknesses of the elements at a measurement point at or nearly at necks of the elements and measurement points at ears of the elements are averaged, and a distance between corners of the metal sheet and a counter load of counter punches are established in order to keep the averages in an allowable range. When elements are blanked out of the metal sheet with the distance and the counter load thus established, even if the metal sheet is laterally displaced out of position, a belt assembly made up of the elements blanked out of the two opposite sides of the metal sheet and mixed at a ratio of about 1 to 1 poses no problems because variations in the thicknesses of the elements blanked out of one of the two opposite sides of the metal sheet and variations in the thicknesses of the elements blanked out of the other of the two opposite sides of the metal sheet cancel each other.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a new and improved apparatus and methods for calibrating environmental air monitor. A new calibration kit comprising a gas cylinder containing calibration gas, a preset regulator valve, a flow matching valve and tubing is disclosed which overcomes many of the prior art disadvantages. The flow matching valve compensates for deviation in calibration gas flow conditions and thus eliminating the need of a sampling bag. The flow matching valve modifies the preset regulator valve by compensating loss of pressure or flow going to the sensor in the environmental air or gas monitor. In addition when an abundance of pressure or flow is transmitted to the monitor, the flow matching valve “vents-off” the excess calibration gas. A method for calibrating a gas or air monitor is also disclosed. The method and apparatus permits a laminar flow, over a sensor located in the air monitor, of constant quantity and quality that is critically necessary for calibrating air monitors.

The exhaust port (12a, 12b) has a valve (13a, 13b) that may be regulated by the pressure of the working medium, which is applied at the supply port (9a, 9b) in order to obtain a smaller dimension of at least the valve and to better utilize the already existing space, specifically within the cylinder, and to better and more efficiently adjust the output capacity of the individual elements. A valve (V), particularly a switch valve (W) of a rocker valve design has therefore at least one inlet (16) and at least one outlet (17a, 17b) for the working medium, as wells as at least one control port (18).

Abstract: A sensor mountable within a hydraulic cylinder provides a precision signal indicative of the position of the piston. The sensor includes a flexible connector attached between the cylinder piston and a converting element for sensing the piston displacement. The converting element comprises a pick-up spool, under tension, coupled to the other end of the connector and rotatable about an axis. A lead screw engages threads on the spool, and translates linearly when the spool rotates. A non-contacting electromechanical transducer senses the position of the lead screw, and provides an output signal proportional to the motion or position of the movable element. The transducer may be an LVDT or other transducer. A high-pressure seal assembly provides an electrical path between the sensor and an external connector. A piston stop prevents the piston from damaging the sensor.
