Patent number: RE37584Abstract: A separating device for extracting cholesterol from plasma uses a spinner to disperse plasma into an extracting solvent in the form of fine droplets to improve separation efficiency, thereby making it suitable for delipidating blood plasma. Blood plasma is delipidated by providing the plasma to the spinner and dispersing the plasma into the extracting solvent in fine droplets. A de-emulsification step removes residual solvent from the plasma. Blood is removed from an animal and the blood plasma is delipidated. Delipidated plasma is de-emulsified and combined with the animal blood, which is then reintroduced into the animal.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 2000Date of Patent: March 19, 2002Assignee: Aruba International Pty LtdInventor: Bill Elliot Cham

Patent number: RE37585Abstract: In one aspect the invention provides a method for laser induced breakdown of a material with a pulsed laser beam where the material is characterized by a relationship of fluence breakdown threshold (Fth) versus laser beam pulse width (T) that exhibits an abrupt, rapid, and distinct change or at least a clearly detectable and distinct change in slope at a predetermined laser pulse width value. The method comprises generating a beam of laser pulses in which each pulse has a pulse width equal to or less than the predetermined laser pulse width value. The beam is focused to a point at or beneath the surface of a material where laser induced breakdown is desired. The beam may be used in combination with a mask in the beam path. The beam or mask may be moved in the x, y, and Z directions to produce desired features. The technique can produce features smaller than the spot size and Rayleigh range due to enhanced damage threshold accuracy in the short pulse regime.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 1999Date of Patent: March 19, 2002Assignee: The Regents of the University of MichiganInventors: Gérard Mourou, Detao Du, Subrata K. Patent number: RE37598Abstract: An apparatus for controlling a continuously variable transmission for use with an automotive vehicle. The transmission is operable at a variable speed ratio for transmitting a drive from its input shaft to its output shaft. A target value for the speed of rotation of the input shaft of the transmission is calculated based on the sensed vehicle operating conditions including vehicle acceleration. A correction factor per predetermined unit time is calculated based on the sensed vehicle acceleration when the sensed vehicle acceleration exceeds a threshold value with the accelerator pedal released. The correction factor is added to the target input shaft speed value to correct the target input shaft speed value in an increasing direction at intervals of the predetermined unit time. The threshold value is decreased as the vehicle speed increases. The speed ratio is controlled to bring the input shaft speed into coincidence with the corrected target value.Type: GrantFiled: March 2, 2000Date of Patent: March 19, 2002Assignee: Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.Inventors: Nobusuke Toukura, Shojiro Sato, Takayoshi Nabeta, Tadayuki Akiyama

Patent number: RE37600Abstract: Methods and systems for optimal access of data are disclosed. A system for optimally updating data is described wherein a central database transmits a location table to a remote terminal having an access time variant (ATV) storage medium wherein a first set of data items is stored. The data on the ATV medium can be displayed visually upon a user's accessing a particular piece of data from the ATV medium. The user's data access habits are indexed on a location table by the central database where the location table is optimized and updated according to the number of accesses the user makes to particular data items. A second set of data is then transmitted to the remote terminal along with the updated location table and stored on the ATV database in optimized form, thereby reducing the access time to the second set of data on all the remote terminals since each particular user's individual habits govern the optimization process.Type: GrantFiled: January 6, 2000Date of Patent: March 19, 2002Inventors: Ralph Weinger, Bruce Weinger

Patent number: RE37601Abstract: Backup copying of designated datasets representing a first selected point in time consistency may be performed in a data processing system on an attached storage subsystem concurrent with data processing system application execution by first suspending application execution only long enough to form a logical-to-physical address concordance, and thereafter physically backing up the datasets on the storage subsystem on a scheduled or opportunistic basis. An indication of each update to a selected portion of the designated datasets which occurs after the first selected point in time is stored and application initiated updates to uncopied designated datasets are first buffered. Thereafter, sidefiles are made of the affected datasets, or portions thereof, the updates are then written through to the storage subsystem, and the sidefiles written to an alternate storage location in backup copy order, as controlled by the address concordance.Type: GrantFiled: November 15, 1995Date of Patent: March 19, 2002Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Lawrence Elwood Eastridge, Robert Frederic Kern, James Mitchell Ratliff
