Abstract: Methods and apparatuses are disclosed for automatic process control of biasing and testing a heated-electrode refrigerant sensor for use in a refrigerant detector. An unbiased sensor may be mounted in a manufacturing station, and while mounted may be biased by applying current to electrically heat the sensor and by applying a voltage potential between the sensor's anode and cathode, thereby generating a bias current at the cathode, and after the sensor is at least partially biased, the bias current is used to electrically test the sensor's construction. If the temperature of the sensor is held constant at a bias temperature, the acceptability of the sensor may be determined based on the time that elapses before the bias current decreases from an initial value to a threshold value, or determined based on the noise present on a signal which is representative of an operating condition other than the bias current magnitude.

Abstract: A macroscopic version of the Scanning Force Microscope is described. It consists of a cantilever under the influence of external forces, which mimic the tip-sample interactions. The use of this piece of equipment is threefold. First, it serves as direct way to understand the parts and functions of the Scanning Force Microscope, and thus it is effectively used as an instructional tool. Second, due to its large size, it allows for simple measurements of applied forces and parameters that define the state of motion of the system. This information, in turn, serves to compare the interaction forces with the reconstructed ones, which cannot be done directly with the standard microscopic set up. Third, it provides a kinematics method to non-destructively measure elastic constants of materials, such as Young's and shear modules, with special application for brittle materials.

Abstract: Described is a method of optimizing tire pressures in order to obtain maximum tire tread life and performance. The method involves calculation of the live and dead loads on each individual tire of the vehicle. Grown diameter of the tires in use is obtained from published data sheets. The grown diameter is then multiplied by an empirically derived tread length determining factor to obtain an optimum tread length in contact with the road surface. In turn the tread length is multiplied by effective tread width to obtain a footprint area for the tires. Finally, the load carried by the individual tires is divided by the footprint area to obtain an optimum inflation pressure.

The device is comprised of an elongate element defining a passageway for a fluid, a fluid flowing through the passageway, means for measuring the rate of water flow through the passageway, and a plurality of temperature-sensing elements positioned along the passageway and within the elongate element. The temperature-sensing elements are spaced from one another longitudinally with respect to the passageway. A method of evaluating fire hazards of materials in standard tests is provided which comprises measuring heat flux distribution in test fires at the moment when sprinklers would have sensed the fire and be activated, and determining the rate of sprinkler water delivery rate that will absorb the heat flux, thus controlling spread of the fire.

Abstract: To conduct a fluid, the transducer has a flow tube which in use is vibrated by an excitation system and whose inlet-side and outlet-side vibrations are detected by means of a sensor system. In response to transverse forces produced in the vibrating flow tube, the latter is, at least temporarily, laterally displaced from an assigned static rest position. To improve the dynamic balance of the transducer, a first cantilever and a second cantilever are rigidly fixed to an inlet-side tube section and an outlet-side tube section, respectively. By means of the cantilevers, the inlet-side and outlet-side tube sections are deformed as a result of lateral displacements of the flow tube. This produces counterforces which at least partially counterbalance the transverse forces produced in the vibrating flow tube. One advantage of the proposed transducer is that it is well balanced even during variations in fluid density.

Abstract: An apparatus for contact-less measuring a difference angle between two parts rotating about a common axis comprises a stator having magnetic pole pairs, and a ferromagnetic rotor having pole ends for magnetically scanning the pole pairs of the stator. There are a first air gap between the pole pairs of the stator and the pole ends of the rotor; and an accessible and rotationally symmetric second air gap between the stator and the rotor. The magnetic flux across the second air gap is changed according to the difference angle between the rotor and the stator. This is determined by a magnetically sensitive element which is arranged at a fixed position within the second air gap.

Abstract: A control device for semiautomatic gearshifting mechanisms of motor vehicles has a selector shaft of a gearshifting mechanism and at least one rotatable shifting element acting on the selector shaft so as to rotate and axially move the selector shaft for selecting a gutter and shifting a gear. A switching valve actuates the at least one shifting element for rotating the selector shaft and for axially moving the selector shaft. The shifting element is a shift drum with at least one control curve. The control curve is a groove in the mantle of the shifting element. The control device provides a simplified hydraulic control of the switching valves and has a simplified configuration.

Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, a preferred method is disclosed for operating a transfer case synchronized range shift mechanism. The range shift mechanism can be selectively actuated for establishing a four-wheel high-range drive mode, a neutral mode, and a four-wheel low-range drive mode. The synchronized range shift mechanism is comprised of a first input gear system, a second input gear system, and an output gear system. The output gear system is comprised of a rotary output member that may be selectively engaged with either the first input gear system or the second input gear system, depending on which four-wheel-drive operating mode the vehicle operator selects. The range shift mechanism is further comprised of a synchronizing mechanism. The present invention discloses a novel method for controlling the speed of the range shift as a means for reducing the time it takes to perform the range shift.
