  • Patent number: 6547471
Abstract: An applicator for local application of a liquid to a person's skin. The applicator includes a porous dome, a chamber under the dome, a squeeze bottle providing a reservoir containing the liquid, and a tube from the squeeze bottle to the chamber. The porous dome has pores sized to provide liquid transport therein by capillary action. The chamber provides a location for liquid in position to be transported into dome. Increased pressure in the reservoir from squeezing the bottle causes liquid to flow from the reservoir through the tube to the chamber, and decreased pressure in the reservoir from releasing the bottle causes excess liquid in the chamber to flow from the chamber through the tube to the reservoir.

  • Patent number: 6547475
Abstract: An anti-theft device secures a removable body part, such as a viewing unit, to a microscope stand. The device is intended to replace a common thumbscrew used to fix the location of a removable body part in a corresponding guide of the microscope stand, and comprises a housing threaded into a tapped hole in the stand for carrying a plunger and a driver both movable within an axial passageway in the housing. The driver is threadably adjustable by hand between driving and non-driving positions with respect to the plunger, and the plunger has a limited range of motion so that it may retract enough to allow the removable body part to be adjusted within the guide but not enough to allow the body part to be removed from the guide when the driver is in a non-driving position. The housing is tightened onto the microscope body by a tool such as a wrench, and the driver is held captive by a snap ring fitting within an internal groove near a trailing end of the housing.

  • Patent number: 6547480
Abstract: An object of the present invention is to obtain economically a corrosion-resistant, abrasion-resistant or heat-resistant composite structure having a high strength by joining together two members so that the two members may not separate from each other. A composite structure is formed by combining and joining together first and second members. The first member has a protruding part expanding toward its extremity and the second member has a concave part defining a space of a shape corresponding to that of the protruding part of the first member and capable of forming a predetermined clearance between the protruding part of the first member and a surface of the concave part of the second member when the first and the second member are combined. Separation of the first and the second member from each other is prevented by inserting wedges in the clearance. Vacant portions of the clearance remaining after the wedges have been inserted in the clearance may be filled up with a filler.

  • Patent number: 6547484
Abstract: A cutting head is provided for milling rumble strip depressions in a road surface. The cutting head has a center rotational axis and a transverse diameter that varies along the length of the rotational axis so that an outer cutting surface of the cutting head defines a plane curve, such as an ellipsoid with truncated ends. The cutting head is mounted on a milling machine and rotated about the rotational axis as it is moved alternately up and down into the road surface. As the milling machine moves down the road, the movement of the cutting head creates spaced apart rumble strip depressions in the road. Because of the elliptical configuration of the cutting head cutting surface, the dimensions of the depressions can be varied along both the forward and lateral axes by simply varying the depth of cut. The curved profile of the cutting head along the rotational axis creates rumble strip depressions that avoid the sharp ninety degree corners and vertical side walls found in conventional rumble strips.

  • Patent number: 6547486
Abstract: In a method for coastal protection, where the coastal area has an underlying freshwater basin and below this a salt water tongue which extends obliquely down into the coastal area, the pressure is equalized in the groundwater basin at least along an area at the shore line completely or partly to the atmosphere through pressure equalization modules, preferably in the form of pipes with a filter at the bottom, which extend down into the groundwater basin. This causes sedimentation of material and thereby an increase in the width of the shore. The resulting sand drift may be utilized for additional building-up of the coastal area by further establishing fascines.

  • Patent number: 6547495
Abstract: A method for reaming a hole in a metal substrate that minimizes the tendency of long and stringy metal chips to be formed that can surround the reamer with a “steel wool-like” mesh or mass of material, as well as an improved reamer for carrying out this method. Abstract: A blind fastener with an improved drive nut and assembly process. The blind fastener includes a screw, a sleeve, a nut, and a drive nut. The drive nut has a smooth bore and protruding nibs that mate precisely with a driving recess located in the nut head. A retaining device is used to retain the drive nut on the screw against the nut. Once the new assembly process for the blind fastener has been completed, the drive nut will have been mated with the nut head to prevent any rotation of the nut during installation of the blind fastener. • Patent number: 6547507
Abstract: A scooter lift includes a post and boom made from a single piece of curved pipe. The boom further includes an arm that is rotationally adjustable about the pipe to provide small, incremental changes in elevation. Incremental rotational adjustment is achieved by a plate attached to the pipe and having a first set of holes that align with second set holes in the angular portion. The holes are drilled in a pattern that provides a vernier-like adjustment of position. The post is mounted on a base such that at least some of the post overlies a point outside the footprint of the base.

  • Patent number: 6547509
Abstract: This invention relates to a lifting device for low-weight loads, and may have a lift and tilt arrangement comprising one single lift arm and one single tilt arm. In that case those arms can either be located centrally in relation to the platform or at one of its sides. Two lift arms and two tilt arms together may be used with related link arms, those lift and tilt arms then being suitably journalled on a common horizontal shaft and the link arms on another horizontal shaft, those two shafts extending transversely to the load-supporting portion of the platform.

  • Patent number: 6547514
Abstract: A technique for facilitating the movement of multi-phase fluids. The technique utilizes a compressor pump and a production pump. The compressor pump compresses a fluid to remove vapor phase and then discharges the pressurized fluid to a production pump. The production pump produces the pressurized fluid to a desired location with greater efficiency due to reduction of the vapor phase.
