  • Patent number: 6606818
Abstract: An environmental insect control apparatus for forcing insects out of the ground for extermination by flooding the insect habitation. The apparatus includes a perimeter wall for being recessed into the ground surrounding an insect habitation, which forms an enclosed treatment area for the extermination of insects as the insects leave the habitation. A trough is formed between an interior ledge and an upper portion of the perimeter wall. Water circulates through the trough and around the interior side of the wall. The water cascades into the enclosed treatment area to form a pool of water that flood the ant mound. As the water cascades over the lip of the interior ledge, insects attempting to crawl up and out of the trap are swept back down. The insects are thereby forced out of the ground by the water and trapped by the recessed perimeter wall where they can be exterminated.

  • Patent number: 6606823
Abstract: The present invention is a modular roof covering made up of a plurality of interlocking modular trays having moisture or water absorbing component or medium in the tray to absorb moisture and allow it to evaporate or otherwise dissipate over time. The trays interlock with each other and are held down by weights or other ballast to secure the trays to the roof without having to create a physical connection between the trays and the roof structure. The modular roof covering can be made up of different types of tray assemblies, where some have vegetation growing in the tray, others have merely water absorption and dissipation capability, while others have photovoltaic cells for the collection and use of solar energy. The present invention provides a light weight, low cost roof covering system for extending the life of current roof structures, and to restore and protect the environment, moderate and aid in controlling building temperature, manage stormwater runoff and collect and utilize solar energy.

  • Patent number: 6606848
Abstract: A system and method for increasing the specific output of a combined cycle power plant and providing flexibility in the power plant rating, both without a commensurate increase in the plant heat rate, is disclosed. The present invention demonstrates that the process of upgrading thermal efficiencies of combined cycles can often be accomplished through the strategic use of additional fuel and/or heat input. In particular, gas turbines that exhaust into HRSGs can be supplemental fired to obtain much higher steam turbine outputs and greater overall plant ratings, but without a penalty on efficiency. This system and method by in large defines a high efficiency combined cycle power plant that is predominantly a Rankine (bottoming) cycle. Exemplary embodiments of the present invention include a load (1304) driven by a topping cycle engine (TCE) (1302), powered by a topping cycle fluid (TCF) (1301) that exhausts (1305) into a heat recovery device (HRD) (1306).

Abstract: Disclosed is an exhaust mixer (50) including a passage (54) extending from an inlet (56) to an outlet (58) that is coincident with a centerline axis of mixer (50). Several ridges (68) are circumferentially disposed about the axis and each flare away from the centerline axis relative to a direction along the centerline axis from inlet (56) toward outlet (58). Ridges (68) each define a corresponding one of several inner channels (74) radially disposed about passage (54) that each intersect passage (54) between inlet (56) and outlet (58). Several outer channels (84) are also radially disposed about passage(54) and are each positioned between a corresponding pair of inner channels (74). Ridges are each shaped to turn inner channels (74and outer channels (84) about the axis as ridges (68) extend along the indicated direction. Inner channels (74) diverge away from the axis and one another in this direction while outer channels (84) converge toward the axis and one another in this direction.

  • Patent number: 6606855
Abstract: Methods and systems for treating vapors from fuels such as gasoline or diesel fuel in an internal combustion engine, to form hydrogen gas or synthesis gas, which can then be burned in the engine to produce more power. Fuel vapor, or a mixture of fuel vapor and exhaust gas and/or air, is contacted with a plasma, to promote reforming reactions between the fuel vapor and exhaust gas to produce carbon monoxide and hydrogen gas, partial oxidation reactions between the fuel vapor and air to produce carbon monoxide and hydrogen gas, or direct hydrogen and carbon particle production from the fuel vapor. The plasma can be a thermal plasma or a non-thermal plasma. The plasma can be produced in a plasma generating device which can be preheated by contact with at least a portion of the hot exhaust gas stream, thereby decreasing the power requirements of the plasma generating device.

  • Patent number: 6606858
Abstract: The neutral override circuit of this invention includes a variable displacement pump controlled by a servo fluidly connected to a displacement control that is biased to a neutral position. A charge pump is connected to the pump and the displacement control. A solenoid-operated neutral override brake control valve is connected to the charge circuit upstream of the displacement control valve and is normally biased to an open position. However, the solenoid urges the valve to a closed position in a response to a signal indicating that the brake has been released. In the open position, the valve dumps charge flow to the pump case until the supply pressure to the displacement control is inadequate to overcome the centering bias of the displacement control. The characteristics of the brake control valve can be set so that some minimum charge pressure and lubricating flow are still provided to the rotating elements of the pump.

  • Patent number: 6606860
Abstract: An energy conversion device for converting heat to mechanical energy. The apparatus includes a heat exchanger vessel absorbing heat from an ambient or energy-rich fluid and transferring heat to a working fluid within an interior chamber of the vessel containing pressurized working gas. An isolation vessel is positioned within the interior chamber, with a gas flow loop defined between the two vessels through which the working gas flows. The isolation vessel is insulated to create a temperature differential and is pressure resistant to allow low pressures in the interior chamber to be maintained. A compressor is positioned within the isolation vessel to compress and discharge the gas into the gas flow loop. An expander is placed in the isolation vessel for converting energy of the expanding gas into a mechanical energy and for rarefying the expanded gas prior to discharge to create a lower bottom temperature or cold reservoir.
