  • Patent number: 6662460
Abstract: A combination carpenter square and bevel/sliding bevel having three triangle-shaped adjoining legs, with an articulating joint between the hypotenuse leg and each adjoining leg. The other two non-hypotenuse legs are capable of being latched or detached by a latching joint that, when latched, forms a substantially 90 degree angle between the two non-hypotenuse legs to function as a carpenter's square. One of the articulating joints at the hypotenuse leg is capable of tightening and loosening. The hypotenuse leg also consists of a slot positioned longitudinally of the hypotenuse leg. The tightening and loosening articulated joint joins the hypotenuse leg with an adjacent leg through the slot, which allows the adjacent leg movement about the joint relative to the hypotenuse leg to function as a bevel. The articulated joints and the detaching function of the latching joint allows the combination square and bevel/sliding bevel to be folded into a compact shape.

  • Patent number: 6662461
Abstract: Apparatus which can be used to calibrate, or provide measurement data on, a machine. The apparatus comprises two structures each with three spherical supports spaced in a triangular array thereon. The supports may be balls or sockets. The structures are interconnected by six members and each support has the ends of two members connected to it. The members are passive extensible measuring bars and the structures are respectively connected to fixed and movable parts of a machine so that movement of the machine parts causes relative movement between the structures and varies the lengths of the measuring bars. From measurements of the lengths of the measuring bars the actual movement of the machine part can be determined. Calibration of the spherical supports is carried out using a measuring bar which is pre-calibrated in a Zerodur jig.

  • Patent number: 6662462
Abstract: Precision measuring apparatus like Co-ordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) are very susceptible to deformations due to temperature variations and gradients. In a known CCM such variations are counteracted by providing parts of the apparatus with an insulating PUR layer. According to the invention the metrology frame 2 of the measuring apparatus is provided with a heat shield 12, 15 which includes an inner layer 12, having a comparatively high heat resistance, and an outer layer (14) which has a comparatively low heat resistance. Temperature gradients causing deformations of the metrology frame 2 are thus effectively reduced, whereas homogeneous temperature variations can be easily compensated for by means of software correction. Moreover, the shield acts as a low-pass filter which reduces the temperature disturbances due to short-term heat inputs.

  • Patent number: 6662472
Abstract: The present invention relates to a buffer device of sport shoes having a plurality of air chamber buffer elements disposed at the appropriate positions on the sole of the shoes, and a ventilation tube of each air chamber buffer element is connected to an air bag on which an air valve is fixed for supplying air from outside. When the air in the air bag and each of the air chamber buffer elements is saturated, the pressure in the air bag and each air chamber buffer element reaches equilibrium, such that the internal air pressure of the air bag or the air chamber buffer element is compressed by the feet and the air is pressed into the air bag or any one of the air chamber buffer elements, and thus attains the effect of elastic buffering for the feet. The air can be refilled any time by the user's wearing the shoes and walking after the air leaks to the outside.

  • Patent number: 6662476
Abstract: A wedge-soled bowling shoe has selectable percentages of regions of different coefficients of friction of traction characteristics and different coefficients of friction of slide characteristics on a shoe sole surface. The shoe gives the bowler precise control over relative amounts of slide and/or traction action of each shoe. The bowler can readily change the relative amounts of slide and/or traction action of each shoe by changing a replaceable sole member of the desired percentages of regions of high or low traction and high or low slide to accommodate differing conditions and differing styles of bowling. Using one of a plurality of pairs of replaceable sole members, a first member of each pair is constructed of two materials, each of a different coefficient of friction to provide slide characteristics and a second member of each pair is constructed of two materials, each of a different coefficient of friction to provide traction characteristics.

In one embodiment, the device comprises a hollow conduit with a perforated end cap on one end and a funnel on the other. The device also comprises a float positioned within the conduit and a rod attached to the float. The float rises and falls within the conduit as the level of the water pooled near the trunk rises and falls. As a result of the float's movement, the rod rises and falls, thereby indicating the level of water hydrating the tree. Due to the length of the device, a user may fill it without excessive bending or reaching, and the funnel inhibits spillage of water when filling the device. Also, the end cap inhibits clogging of the device.

  • Patent number: 6662502
Abstract: A movable partition system with a plurality of wall elements that are suspended from a guide rail and can be laterally moved to form a wall to close a space in a building. One of the wall elements is realized in the form of a door that can be operatively connected to a door closer that is mounted in a stationary manner to the guide rail. When the wall elements are moved to a closed position, the door is engaged with the door closer so as to pivot the door. When the wall elements are moved out of the closed position, the door is disengaged from the door closer. In addition, the door is prevented from pivoting by a rocker arm during movement of the wall elements, which rocker arm is rotated out of the way of the door when the wall elements are in the closed position to permit pivoting of the door.

  • Patent number: 6662505
Abstract: A method and apparatus for supporting and straightening a wall includes two secured brackets, a beam extending between the brackets and the wall, the beam being comparable in length to the walls height. In between the beam and one of the brackets, a holding bracket is placed which includes a retaining ring. A jack extends between the secured bracket and holding bracket and is used to apply pressure to the beam and thereby to the wall. The jack may include a bolt inserted through the secured bracket to contact the holding bracket inside the retaining ring and a nut which is located on the bolt in between the holding bracket and secured bracket. By tightening the bolt, the user can apply pressure to the beam and straighten or retain the wall. As the wall shifts during periods of correction, the bolt may be re-tightened to apply additional pressure to the wall.

Abstract: A collapse-resistant frame system (10) for a bridge or building structure includes a plurality of mechanically-interconnected columns (12) and beams (14). At least the lowermost columns are formed of a material (28) that exhibits quasi-elastic behavior in response to seismic excitation, while the beams of the frame system are formed of a material (22) that exhibits elastic/plastic behavior, such that quasi-elastic flexure of the columns under seismic loading will cause plastic hinge formation in the beam ends (26) to thereby dissipate the rotational energy without significant plastic hinge formation in the column bases.
