Abstract: An improved method and apparatus for indirect evaporative cooling of a fluid stream to substantially its dew point temperature. Plate heat exchanger has perforations (11) and channels (3, 4 and 5) for gas on a dry side and wet side. There is a trough formed in a portion of the plate that temporarily holds evaporative fluid which is in contact with the wick material on the wet side surface of the plate. The evaporative fluid flows through the trough by way of liquid perforations into the next trough. The trough of a plate with a wet side up, the liquid perforations are on the side creating a reservoir to wet the opposing wick materials. As streams flow across the dry side (9), transferring heat to the plate. Working gas stream (2) flows across the dry side and through perforations to channels (5) on wet side (10), which it then cools by evaporative cooling as well as conductive and radiative transfer of heat from plate.

  • Patent number: 6705098
Abstract: A vehicle air conditioner has a standby RAM having a map memorizing many regions of, for example, preset temperature, each of which is determined by environmental conditions such as the inside/outside air temperatures and the sunlight amount. The air conditioner automatically controls the air conditioning of the passenger compartment of the vehicle based on the information stored in the region of the map determined by the environmental conditions that is regarded as a control preset temperature used for calculating a target blowing temperature in a control flow repeating cyclically. When the preset temperatures read at the previous cycle and the current cycle are different from each other, the control preset temperature is regarded as the preset temperature which changes gradually from the previous one to the current one, whereby the temperature of air blown into the passenger compartment gradually changes.

  • Patent number: 6705115
Abstract: A process for producing synthetic quartz glass using a burner composed of a plurality of concentric nozzles involves the steps of feeding a silica-forming raw material gas and a fluorine compound gas to a reaction zone from a center nozzle, feeding oxygen gas from a second nozzle outside the center nozzle, and feeding oxygen gas and/or hydrogen gas from a third nozzle. The silica-forming raw material gas is hydrolyzed to form fine particles of silica, which particles are deposited on a rotatable substrate so as to form a porous silica matrix, which is then fused to give the quartz glass. The flow rate of the oxygen gas fed from the second nozzle and the flow rate of the raw material gas are controlled so as to provide a 1.1- to 3.5-fold stoichiometric excess of oxygen. The excess oxygen suppresses Si—Si bond formation in the quartz glass, enabling the production of synthetic quartz glass having a high transmittance in the vacuum ultraviolet region.

  • Patent number: 6705125
Abstract: The present invention provides a method for reducing the density of sites on the surface of fused silica optics that are prone to the initiation of laser-induced damage, resulting in optics which have far fewer catastrophic defects and are better capable of resisting optical deterioration upon exposure for a long period of time to a high-power laser beam having a wavelength of about 360 nm or less. The initiation of laser-induced damage is reduced by conditioning the optic at low fluences below levels that normally lead to catastrophic growth of damage. When the optic is then irradiated at its high fluence design limit, the concentration of catastrophic damage sites that form on the surface of the optic is greatly reduced.

  • Patent number: 6705140
Abstract: A latch assembly having at least one control element having one path of motion in which a ratchet is moved to an unlatched position and another path of motion in which the ratchet is not so moved, the path of motion taken by the control element dependent upon whether an engagement element is engaged with the control element or disengaged therefrom. Preferably, the control element moves the ratchet by contact with a pawl which itself can be engaged with the ratchet. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, two or more unlatching inputs are capable of unlatching the latch assembly. However, two or more of these inputs are in series rather than in parallel so that the number of paths ending at the element or device holding the latch in its latched state is preferably fewer than the number of unlatching inputs to the latch assembly.

  • Patent number: 6705141
Abstract: The invention relates to a combined mechanical and key comprising a key housing for electronic components and an L-shape flat key (30). Said flat key consists of a bearing limb (31) which enables the key to pivot into a storage position and a shank (32) which mechanically operates the lock. The shank (32) of the flat key (30) can be displaced between an inoperative position, retracted into the key housing and an operative position, in which it projects out of the hosing. A push-button preferably also acts as the pivoting axis for the flat key (30). The push-button and the housing have profiled sections and the bearing limb has co-operating profiled sections (37, 38, 39), to subject the flat key (30) to a force in the operative position and to lock the key in one of its positions. The invention aims to produce a simple, cost-effective key. To this end, the flat key is configured as a planar plate (34) with an L-shaped outline, the shank (32) sharing the same plane as the bearing limb.

Abstract: A metal material is rolled to form a strip plate material having a middle part and thinner thickness-deviation portions on both sides of the middle part. After that, this strip plate material is bent and deformed in its width direction by roll forming, thus forming a bent and deformed portion in the middle part. The processing method includes a rolling step and a roll forming step, which enables the metal material to be processed economically using relatively simple steps. No annealing step is included and therefore an excellent final product is obtained. Particularly, the rolling step and the roll forming step are carried out successively, so that the roll forming can be carried out with high efficiency using processing heat generated in the rolling step. The bent and deformed portion is thick and the thickness-deviation portions are thinner, which contributes to the reduction in weight of a final product while the same strength as that of a conventional product is maintained.
