Abstract: While at least one of first and second tools 4 and 5 of a junction tool 6 is rotated, a workpiece W made of a plurality of plate materials W1 and W2 superimposed in their thickness directions is nipped between the first and second tools and joined at points. The first tool 4 is provided with a pin 44 protruding from its distal end surface 43 along a junction axis X. The second tool 5 is provided with a depression 51 which is depressed at its distal end surface 53 along the junction axis X. By the first pin 44 of the first tool 4 and the depression 51 of the second tool 5, the superimposed surface W3 of the softened workpiece W is caulked in the direction of the junction axis X. Further, plastic flow is generated within the workpiece W so as to agitate the vicinity of the superimposed surface W3.

Abstract: An exchange-coupled magnetic structure of a cobalt-ferrite layer adjacent a magnetic metal layer is used in magnetorestive sensors, such as spin valves or tunnel junction valves. The exchange-coupled magnetic structure is used in a pinning structure pinning the magnetization of a ferromagnetic pinned layer, or in an AP pinned layer. A low coercivity ferrite may be used in an AP free layer. Cobalt-ferrite layers may be formed by co-sputtering of Co and Fe in an oxygen/argon gas mixture, or by sputtering of a CoFe2 composition target in an oxygen/argon gas mixture. Alternatively, the cobalt-ferrite layer may be formed by evaporation of Co and Fe from an alloy source or separate sources along with a flux of oxygen atoms from a RF oxygen atom beam source. Magnetoresistive sensors including cobalt-ferrite layers have small read gaps and produce large signals with high efficiency.

The body is translated in the z direction by moving the bearing wedges over an equal distance but in opposite directions. The body is translated in the y direction by moving the bearing wedges over an equal distance in the same direction. The mutually moving parts of the apparatus are carried by means of fluid bearings. A high precision is thus obtained, because fewer errors due to non-infinite stiffnesses and error motions are accumulated. The insole can be prepared by molding a structure comprising a foam layer having a first foam side and a second foam side. The insole includes a heel region, an arch region, and a toe region. The heel region includes a heel cushioning portion and a heel perimeter portion. The heel perimeter portion includes a retaining wall that extends above the top surface of the heel cushioning portion. The arch region includes an arch cushioning portion and an arch perimeter portion. The arch perimeter portion includes an arch support that extends above the top surface of the arch cushioning portion. The toe region includes a toe cushioning portion and a toe perimeter portion. A slipper and a method for manufacturing a slipper are described.

Abstract: In its simplest conceptual form, the applicant's invention is the structure of a conventional shoe sole that has been modified by having its sides bent up so that their inner surface conforms to a shape nearly identical but slightly smaller than the shape of the outer surface of the sides of the foot sole of the wearer (instead of the shoe sole sides conforming to the ground by paralleling it, as is conventional). The shoe sole sides are sufficiently flexible to bend out easily when the shoes are put on the wearer's feet and therefore the shoe soles gently hold the sides of the wearer's foot sole when on, providing the equivalent of custom fit in a mass-produced shoe sole. This invention can be applied to shoe sole structures based on a theoretically ideal stability plane as a basic concept, especially including structures exceeding that plane.

Abstract: A sole construction for supporting at least a portion of a human foot and for providing energy storage and return is provided. The sole construction includes a generally horizontal layer of stretchable material, at least one chamber positioned adjacent a first side of the layer, and at least one actuator positioned adjacent a second side of the layer vertically aligned with a corresponding chamber. Each actuator has a footprint size smaller than that of the corresponding chamber, and is sized and arranged to provide individual support to the bones of the human foot. The support structure when compressed causes the actuator to push against the layer and move the layer at least partially into the corresponding chamber. In one embodiment, the horizontal layer of stretchable material is at least partially enclosed by a wall the prevents horizontal displacement of the layer during compression.

Abstract: The invention relates to an inner or inlay sole (2) for a shoe, in particular a sports shoe, which permits optimal damping properties and optimal wearing comfort. The above inner sole (2) is constructed in an integral manner from a flexible material and comprises blisters (6). According to a preferred embodiment, the blisters (6) are hollow in form in order to meet the requirement particularly well. According to a further embodiment, perforations (20) are provided in the region between the blisters and/or in the blisters themselves, for the optimisation of the damping properties and for removing fluids from the foot of the user. A combination of the two embodiments is particularly advantageous.

Abstract: A method for manufacturing custom fit therapeutic footwear such as shoes and inserts includes the step of measuring a patient's foot and forming an imprint of a patient's foot to identify the patient's footprint and any high pressure areas on the bottom of the foot. The method also includes the step of making a mold of a lower portion of the patient's foot and subsequently making a plaster cast of the lower portion of the patient's foot. A multidensity sheet of insert material is provided and formed into a shape that corresponds to the lower portion of a patient's foot as for example by vacuum forming. The method also includes the step of providing a second insert material that is softer than the first insert material. The imprint of the patient's foot is then used to position any needed accommodations. The area to be accommodated is then reduced in thickness and partially filled with a sheet of softer insert material.

Abstract: A backhoe (100) has a hydraulic cylinder (316, 317) with a piston (318, 319) that rotates a rotatable boom (108). A lockable slider block (322) slides on the piston. Movement of the lockable slider block in one direction is caused by a spring (328, 329) mounted around the piston, and in another direction is caused by the telescoping of the piston into the hydraulic cylinder. The backhoe includes a hydraulic valve (340) that controls hydraulic pressure to the hydraulic cylinder and a sensor (320) coupled to the hydraulic valve. Once locked to a position on the piston, the lockable slider block engages the sensor on each occasion the rotatable boom rotates beyond a preselected angle of rotation. Engagement of the sensor causes actuation of the hydraulic valve, thereby preventing further rotation of the boom by the hydraulic cylinder. Alternative embodiments have an encoder (120, 130) that digitizes the position of the boom, and a microcomputer (410) that is programmed to actuate the hydraulic valve.

Abstract: To represent an image on a stepped surface, an eyepoint on the axis of sight in front of partial surfaces of the stepped surface is selected. The image is divided into partial images that are assigned to the partial surfaces. Each partial image is projected from the eyepoint onto the partial surface to which it has been assigned. Alternatively, the image is divided into partial images that are assigned to the partial surfaces so that the first partial image, which is assigned to the first partial surface closest to the eyepoint, is modified by a specified factor. Each additional partial image is enlarged relative to the first partial image based on the distance from the eyepoint of the partial surface to which it is assigned and is then represented on its respective partial surface.
