Patent number: 6877690Abstract: A combination powered parachute and motorcycle modifies an initially conventional motorcycle with the addition of various flight components to provide sustained flight for the machine. A peripheral and overhead safety structure is installed upon the motorcycle, with a second flight engine, propeller, folding propeller guard, and fuel system also installed. The flight engine and all of its systems are completely independent of the conventional motorcycle engine used for surface propulsion. A set of laterally disposed stabilizer wheels is also provided for transition from ground to flight and from flight to ground operation. Lift is provided by a folding parafoil device of either the ram air inflated or partially pneumatically inflated type. For flight operations, the lateral wheels are lowered and extended, the folding propeller guard is extended, and the parafoil is deployed behind the motorcycle, with the parafoil lifting conventionally upon attaining flight speed.Type: GrantFiled: June 6, 2003Date of Patent: April 12, 2005Inventor: Albert J. Patent number: 6877691Abstract: A technique is provided that uses a dual mode seeker (IR and LADAR) for precise target dynamics measurement, which extends stripping to a much higher altitude than ground based radar. Initial results show that this approach works to altitudes in excess of 100 km. Stripping becomes a reliable way to discriminate lighter weight decoys from reentry vehicles at altitudes and ranges consistent with planned divert capabilities for terminal phase missile defense. It is a finding of this invention that the LADAR will improve the spatial resolution by a factor of five over typical missile defense IR seekers using a common aperture. The LADAR provides a 3D angle, angle, range (AAR) image for each laser pulse which is used to extract the precise target state vectors.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 2002Date of Patent: April 12, 2005Assignee: BAE Systems Information and Electronic Systems Integration Inc.Inventors: Michael E. Patent number: 6877692Abstract: The invention provides a propulsion system based on “thuniform” movement of a foil member to achieve desired directional movement of a vehicle such as an unmanned submarine type of vessel. A pair of foil members are mounted to the vehicle body for reciprocating oscillating movement towards and away from each other, creating forward movement due to the compression of a fluid medium between the foil members and the expulsion of the compressed fluid rearwardly of the foil members. Each foil member is mounted to a pivot shaft for limited rotational movement with respect to the vehicle body. Damping means are connected between each pivot shaft and its associated foil member so that during operation of the propulsion system damping torque will offset hydrodynamic loads imposed on the foil members by the fluid medium. The damping means will in turn control the pitch angle of the foil members during operation, meaning that a thrust is generated for rigid foil members when moving at zero forward speed.Type: GrantFiled: March 5, 2004Date of Patent: April 12, 2005Assignee: National Research Council of CanadaInventor: Pengfei Liu

Patent number: 6877696Abstract: An inflatable evacuation slide is presented that includes an aerodynamic spoiler to kill the lift caused by air flowing laterally over the slide. The slide preferably comprises a fabric sliding surface stretched between two longitudinal main side members. The spoiler comprises a fabric panel, supported by a plurality of fabric gussets, that extends outward from each of the main side members. When the main side member of the slide is exposed to a lateral wind load, the spoiler creates a flow separation that kills the lift generated by the airflow. By killing the lift induced by the airflow over the top of the inflatable evacuation slide, zero or negative lift is generated by the airflow over the inflatable evacuation slide, which causes the slide to deploy downward firmly contacting the ground even in high wind conditions.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 2002Date of Patent: April 12, 2005Assignee: Goodrich CorporationInventor: Ramon J. Patent number: 6877698Abstract: A system for deploying an aircraft emergency evacuation slide or other inflatable device utilizes an inflation gas that is stored in a partially liquified state. The inflation gas includes a gaseous compound, preferably nitrous oxide, that is capable of undergoing an exothermic thermal decomposition, which gives off heat and produces a greater number moles of inflation gas than the number of moles of gas stored. The increase in moles of gas allows a greater inflation volume for a given weight of stored gas, while the exothermic decomposition produces additional heat that offsets, to some extent, the endothermic boiling and expansion of the liquified stored gas.Type: GrantFiled: February 11, 2004Date of Patent: April 12, 2005Assignee: Universal Propulsion Company, Inc.Inventors: James J.
