  • Patent number: 6941762
Abstract: An automated cold storage apparatus, and related method thereof, provides a sample process management system that is a revolutionary approach to the storage and retrieval regarding critical samples. The system—a significant technological breakthrough in laboratory automation—is the first ultra low temperature robotic system capable of being validated. Samples in containers are stored and retrieved robotically through an airlock climate-control chamber that is automatically dehumidified by a dry gas purge, such as a carbon dioxide or nitrogen purge or the like. This purge rapidly reduces ambient humidity to a desirable relative humidity (RH), e.g., less than about 15% RH, virtually eliminating the accumulation of frost. Microplates are systematically identified using barcode technology, for example. Once through the climate-controlled chamber, the containers (i.e., samples) are robotically transferred to the rotary mechanism.

  • Patent number: 6941763
Abstract: This heat pump and dehumidifying apparatus have small energy-consumed per moisture-removed ratios. Their components include a pressurizer for raising refrigerant pressure; a condenser for condensing refrigerant, thereby heating a high-temperature heat source fluid; an evaporator for evaporating refrigerant to cool a low-temperature heat source fluid; and a heat exchanger in a refrigerant path connecting the condenser and the evaporator for evaporating and condensing refrigerant under an intermediate pressure between the condensor pressure and the evaporator pressure. The low-temperature heat source fluid is successively cooled by the heat exchanger, cooled by the evaporator, and heated by the heat exchanger. This fluid can be precooled by the heat exchanger before cooling in the evaporator, and heat removed during precooling can be returned to the fluid after cooling by the evaporator.

  • Patent number: 6941769
Abstract: A flash tank configuration for an economizer is provided that is inexpensive and simple to construct, reliable to operate, and efficient for use in an economizer compression refrigeration system. The configuration includes an upper baffle and a lower baffle configured and arranged within the flash tank so as to separate the liquid and gas phases of intermediate pressure refrigerant, and to convey each phase to other components in the refrigeration systems. The flash tank has a generally cylindrical shape, and is dimensioned so as to provide adequate internal volume for expansion of refrigerant to a desired pressure, separation of the resulting refrigerant gas and refrigerant liquid phases, and temporary storage of the refrigerant phases before conveying the liquid phase to the main refrigerant line between the condenser and the evaporator, and returning the gas phase to the compressor. Additionally, methods are provided for using the flash tank to separate refrigerant phases.

  • Patent number: 6941770
Abstract: An economizer loop is incorporated into the refrigerant system, which in conjunction with any selected reheat mode of operation, provides augmented performance, improved reliability, and enhanced control in meeting external heat load demands. A refrigerant system includes several features that can be selectively utilized alone or in combination with each other to provide an enhanced control over system cooling and dehumidification capability. In particular, a reheat coil is incorporated into the refrigerant system, and has alternative connection points to the main circuit, positioned both upstream and downstream of a condenser. Also, a flow control device allows a selective bypass around a condenser. In this manner, the refrigerant flowing through the reheat coil can be controlled to provide a desired level of temperature and humidity. Finally, the compressor may include an unloader feature such that additional steps in capacity control can be provided.

  • Patent number: 6941774
Abstract: The present invention provides an optical fiber preform-heating furnace that is simple in its structure and excellent in uniformity of the temperature distribution in a circumferential direction of an optical fiber preform. The optical fiber preform-heating furnace includes a furnace core tube into which an optical fiber preform is supplied; a heater that surrounds the furnace core tube; a pair of electrode connection portions with which the heater is provided and has a face opposing to an outer periphery surface of the furnace core tube; and electrode portions that are disposed to each of the electrode connection portions and connected to a power supply. When a cylindrical heat insulator is disposed between the furnace core tube and the opposing faces, since an outward heat transfer amount from the furnace core tube side through the electrode portion can be reduced, the temperature distribution in a circumferential direction of the optical fiber preform can be improved in its uniformity.

A variable gain amplifier adjusts a gain of displacement signal corresponding to displacement of the vibrating cantilever so as to satisfy the equation G=(A/A0)*G0 to control a quality factor value of the cantilever resonance to an optimal quality factor value, where G represents a gain value of the variable gain amplifer, A represents a preselected oscillation amplitude of the oscillator, A0 represents an initial oscillation amplitude of the oscillator, and G0 represents a gain value of the variable gain amplifier when the initial oscillation amplitude of the oscillator is A0.

Abstract: The invention provides a measuring method of a tread wear amount by using a pneumatic tire in which a mark portion is formed on a part of a tread surface, the mark portion changing its surface shape as wear progresses. Image data of the mark portion is detected, the detected data is inputted in processor means, and then the tread wear amount is determined by use of either ratio referential data of the mark portion inputted in advance and corresponding to the wear amounts of the tread surface, or a formula inputted in advance for computing the wear amount, thereby facilitating automatic measurement of the tread wear amount.

Abstract: A method is provided for replacing at least one tire of a vehicle on a first wheel in a first wheel position, the vehicle having a tire pressure monitoring system with a first sensor unit having a first ID code mounted to the first wheel. The first sensor unit is interrogated. Either a nominal result or a faulted result of the interrogation is detected. The at least one tire is removed from the first wheel. If the nominal result is detected during the interrogating step, then the first sensor unit is re-interrogated. Either a nominal result or a faulted result of the re-interrogation is detected. If either of the interrogation or the re-interrogation provide a faulted result then the first ID code is cloned into a replacement sensor unit and then the replacement sensor unit is swapped for the first sensor unit on the first wheel. A new tire is installed onto the first wheel. The first wheel is installed onto the vehicle in the first wheel position.

Abstract: A vehicle spare tire pressure detection assembly includes a tire support and hoisting unit that performs the function of hoisting and storing a spare tire, and a spare tire pressure detection unit that performs the function of monitoring tire pressure in the spare tire when the spare tire is in a stored state. The tire support and hoisting unit is configured to maintain an initial compression force on a side wall of the spare tire to deflect the side wall of the spare tire. The spare tire pressure detection unit monitors the adjustments made by the tire support and hoisting unit to maintain the initial compression force on the spare tire to determine if the spare tire has lost tire pressure below a predetermined threshold amount. A human detectable signal is produced when the spare tire pressure falls below the predetermined threshold amount.

Abstract: A multi-function air data sensing probe has a strut that is mounted on an aircraft and extends laterally from the aircraft skin. The strut is supported on a base plate, and has a pitot pressure sensing tube at the outer end thereof, with a pitot port facing upstream, and also includes a passageway for total air temperature sensor including a forwardly facing inlet scoop that leads to a chamber in the strut that is laterally offset from the inlet scoop so that flow changes direction as it enters the chamber. The surface defining the change of direction between the scoop and the chamber is provided with bleed holes for bleeding off boundary layer air. A vane type air data sensor is mounted on a shaft that rotates freely and is supported on the strut, and is positioned to sense the relative air flow past the strut to determine changes of relative angles of such air flow. In addition, the strut has static pressure sensing ports on lateral sides thereof leading to a separate chamber on the interior of the strut.
