Abstract: A pressure-boosting apparatus particularly amenable for use in downhole applications is disclosed. The pressure-boosting apparatus employs an unbalanced piston which is initially fixated in a run-in position. The piston has a flowpath therethrough in which is mounted a check valve. Initially, pressure is applied to above and below the piston which results in an unbalanced force on the piston due to its configuration. Flow to the tool initiates its actuation at this time. When the unbalanced force reaches a predetermined level, the piston is no longer fixated to the housing and begins to accelerate. Acceleration of the piston closes the check valve due to the sudden decrease in pressure behind the check valve and an increase in pressure in front of the check valve as the fluid volume in front of the piston is compressed.

Abstract: An extracorporeal blood circuit is disclosed for withdrawing, filtering and returning blood from peripheral blood vessels. The blood passage in the circuit extends through a withdrawal tube connected to a catheter in a peripheral vein, a filter, one or more pressure sensors and return tube also connected to a catheter in a peripheral vein (which may or may not be the same vein as used for the withdrawal tube). The blood passage is air free, and has smooth passage walls which promoted continuous and uniform flow of the blood through the circuit.

Abstract: The Collision Avoidance System prevents collisions between vehicles and vehicular collisions with pedestrians, trains, and stationary objects by monitoring, controlling, documenting, and reporting the speed and position of vehicles. The system guards against speeding violations, moving violations, and particular safety hazards by invoking a reduction of vehicle speed or by restricting vehicle movement to control its position. This is primarily accomplished with the activation of a controllable road perturbation. The system also monitors pedestrians, school bus loading/unloading, traffic density, trains, environmental conditions that may affect driving, and traffic control systems to determine the action to take for collision prevention.

Abstract: The present invention is to provide a decoder which detects a start code in a layered coded data stream on a layer basis for improving an error detecting function to reduce possible damaging effects, and replaces a detected start code with minor error by an appropriate start code to maintain decoding. The decoder includes a unique pattern detector which detects a start code pattern in a layered coded data stream, a start code identifier which identifies the detected start code pattern based on a given condition, a similarity calculator which calculates similarity as an evaluation between the error detected start code pattern and an expected start code based on layer, and a similarity based replacement identifier which replaces the error detected start code pattern by the most appropriate replacement selected based on the similarity based evaluation, and otherwise the priority based replacement identifier which selects a replacement by the priority order.

Abstract: A multilayer body system, adapted for use in protective sports equipment, is described which comprises in combination in sequence a center core layer of a lightweight high strength impact resistant material layer, a first layer of a foam type padding entirely surrounding and bonded to the inner core layer, a second layer of a padding type material layer completely surrounding and enclosing the inner layers, thus acting as an outer cover layer, of which the two layers are then securely stitched at their periphery. The construction method described herein also ensures that the inner layers are securely held in place and thus immobilized from unexpected and unwanted movement within the embodiment. Also the padding construction ensures safety and comfort.

A bib pillow type is attached to the main bib body with suitable fasteners such as hook and loop fasteners. Each row of interengageable teeth of the closure zipper and one of the rows of interengageable teeth of one of the liner zippers are provided along opposite edges of a common, fabric tape, which is sewn to and within the outer shell. The other row of interengageable teeth of each of the liner zippers is attached to one edge of a separate, fabric tape, which is sewn to the inner liner.

Abstract: A modular helmet system having a helmet base to protect from impacts the crown of a wearer's head and terminating basally in a rear rim and side rims; a C-shaped extension detachably connected to said rims to protect from impacts, when fitted to the helmet base, the base of a wearer's skull; and a crown comb detachably connected centrally over the crown of the helmet base. The helmet base is provided with ventilation windows centrally located over its crown. The comb covers and seals said ventilation windows. The comb is also employed to secure the extension in place, when fitted on the helmet base.
