  • Patent number: 7185618
Abstract: A sheet metal rocker arm of the welded and brazed tube and “boat type” rocker arm formed from sheet metal and characterized by having a reinforcing cross member which is integrally formed from a tab created by slitting the tube insert and which yields a unitary structure that introduces substantially greater stiffness to the rocker arm. The tube may be optionally rolled from sheet metal or by using seamless tubing. The method of creating integrally formed reinforcing cross-members by appropriate lancing slits in the sheet metal can be applied to any stamped rocker arm that has a U-channel architecture, e.g., including, for example, rocker arms for pushrod type valve trains as well as roller finger follower type rocker arms. Provision of the integrally formed cross member renders stiffness to the rocker arm that enables an engine to operate at a higher rpm and thereby to produce more horsepower.

Abstract: An internal combustion engine (20) has a cylinder (1) wherein a piston (2) is mounted. The piston (2) drives a crankshaft (10) which is rotatably journalled in a crankcase (11). The piston (2) delimits a combustion chamber wherein an air/fuel mixture is compressed and is ignited by an ignition device (19). The ignition time point (Z) is determined in a first operating state of the engine (20) in accordance with a first characteristic line (22) and in a second operating state of the engine (20) in accordance with a second characteristic line (23). A switching element switches over between the first characteristic line (22) and the second characteristic line (23) in dependence upon an engine characteristic variable. A method for operating the engine (20) provides that an engine characteristic variable is determined during operation of the engine (20) and that a switchover between the ignition characteristic lines (22) and (23) takes place for a pregiven change of the characteristic variable.

  • Patent number: 7185633
Abstract: It is determined whether an internal combustion engine is in an idle state or in a non-idle state based on the throttle opening degree. DI ratio control for controlling fuel injection ratio between in-cylinder injection and port injection is performed in accordance with different control modes in the idle state and in the non-idle state. While the DI ratio control mode is basically switched according to transition between the idle and non-idle states, in the engine cold state where fuel deposition disturbing air-fuel ratio control is likely to occur, a transition delay period is provided upon transition from the non-idle state to the idle state. During the transition delay period, the control mode is fixed irrespective of the transition between the idle and non-idle states. This prevents intermittent changes of the DI ratio, and thus, prevents variation in engine output.

  • Patent number: 7185634
Abstract: High efficiency, high pressure fixed displacement pump systems and methods of control. A typical application is for engine driven high pressure pumps for powering loads such as fuel injectors and/or hydraulic engine valve actuators. The pump systems include a control valve controllably coupling the pump output back to the pump input to stop the pumping when the desired pressure of the output is reached. Reinitiating pumping an increment in crankshaft angle before a load event based in the increment in pressure needed to reach the desired pressure at the crankshaft angle of the load event provides a simple control algorithm assuring accurate repeatability in the pressure at the beginning of a load event. Pumping throughout the load event minimizes the decrease in pressure during the load event. Providing underlap in the control valve minimizes pressure peaks and maximizes efficiently when starting and stopping the pumping action. Various embodiments are disclosed.

Abstract: A fuel injection system for internal combustion engines includes a high-pressure accumulator acted on with highly pressurized fuel by a high-pressure delivery unit and in turn supplies fuel to fuel injectors. The fuel injection system has a pressure control valve, which is disposed between a high-pressure side and a low-pressure side and actuating a valve element. The pressure control valve is actuated by means of an electrical actuator. An end surface of the pressure control valve delimits the low-pressure region in the high-pressure accumulator and is sealed by means of a seal disposed on the low-pressure side.

  • Patent number: 7185637
Abstract: In a fuel injection control method of an engine, an electronic control unit calculates a pressure integrated value for one combustion cycle by detecting a combustion cycle and continuously detecting a suction air pipe pressure and determines that the engine is under an accelerated state such that a pressure difference determined by comparing the pressure integrated value with the pressure integrated value at the preceding combustion cycle becomes equal to or more than a predetermined acceleration determining reference value, thereby increasing a fuel amount. The electronic control unit determines that the engine is under the accelerated state at a particular time when the difference between the pressure integrated value and the atmospheric pressure becomes equal to or less than a reference value and a pressure difference integrated value obtained by integrating each of the pressure differences within an integrating period becomes equal to or more than another reference value.

Abstract: A method, fuel system, and a valve for facilitating the delivery of liquid fuel and fuel vapors from a fuel tank in fluid communication with a carburetor of an internal combustion engine. During operation of the internal combustion engine, the fuel tank is permitted to fluidically communicate the liquid fuel to the carburetor, and to vent the fuel vapors to one or more of a carbon canister, the atmosphere, and the carburetor. In contrast, when the internal combustion engine is not operating, the fuel tank is prevented from fluidically communicating the liquid fuel to the carburetor, and from venting the fuel vapors to one or more of the carbon canister, the atmosphere, and the carburetor, thereby preventing escape of evaporative emissions of the fuel from the fuel tank.
