  • Patent number: 7188593
Abstract: A control duty is obtained, which asymptotically makes the output of a control subject consistent with an output of a reference model. The output of the control subject simulates a dynamic characteristic of a variable valve timing controller, and the output of the reference model simulates an ideal input-output characteristic of the variable valve timing. The control duty makes a difference between the output of the reference model and an actual valve timing small enough. A parameter of a controller is consecutively corrected to make the difference small by means of a parameter correcting mechanism when the dynamic characteristic of the variable valve timing controller is varied due to a variation of an operating environment thereof so that the difference becomes large.

  • Patent number: 7188606
Abstract: A diesel engine comprises an EGR valve, an intake throttle valve, a control unit for controlling those EGR valve and intake throttle valve, and a detection unit for detecting the intake air quantity upstream of an EGR gas inlet portion, the diesel engine implementing a premix combustion at least in the prescribed operation region. The control unit, at least in the operation region in which the premix combustion is implemented, determines a target intake air quantity necessary for igniting the gas mixture at the target timing based on the engine operation state and controls the intake throttle valve and/or EGR valve so that the actual intake air quantity detected by the detection unit matches the target intake air quantity. As a result, the ignition timing of the fuel in premix combustion can be easily and optimally controlled.

  • Patent number: 7188607
Abstract: The technique of the present invention produces a first fuel-air mixture containing a first fuel and the air at a specific ratio, which does not allow for auto ignition of the first fuel-air mixture by simple compression, in a combustion chamber. The technique then injects a second fuel, which has a higher octane value than that of the first fuel, into a partial area of the combustion chamber, so as to produce a second fuel-air mixture. The technique ignites the second fuel-air mixture for combustion, so as to compress and auto-ignite the first fuel-air mixture. The second fuel has the higher octane value, so that a combustion start timing of the second fuel-air mixture is reliably regulated by ignition. Namely the technique positively controls the timing of auto ignition of the first fuel-air mixture. Setting an adequate value to the ignition timing thus effectively prevents the occurrence of knocking.

  • Patent number: 7188608
Abstract: In common rail fuel injection systems, a sensed rail pressure is used to determine control signals to produce desired injection characteristics. Because rail pressure fluctuates, especially during cold start procedures, and because the rail pressure must be sensed before the injection event to be controlled, the accuracy of the timing and quantity of the injection event can be compromised if the rail pressure at the start of the injection event is different from the sensed rail pressure. In order to produce more accurate fuel injection characteristics, the rail pressure is sensed after the end of control signal for an immediately preceeding injection event but at least a predetermined time before the start of control signal for a succeeding injection event.

  • Patent number: 7188610
Abstract: A no-return loop fuel injection system supplies fuel from a fuel pump to an injector fuel rail, through a fuel line. A biased closed pressure control valve communicates with the fuel line and has a valve head preferably of a diaphragm type carrying a fuel side having first and second areas which are segregated and defined by a valve seat when the pressure control valve is closed. An opposite second side of the pressure control valve is exposed to a reference pressure and a closure biasing force. The pressure control valve opens when a hydraulic opening force induced by a fuel pressure exerted upon the first area, plus a fuel pressure exerted upon the second area, is greater than the net reference pressure and closure biasing forces. Preferably, the first area is smaller than the second area, thus manipulating the effects of the fuel pressures exerted upon the first and second areas with respect to opening the valve.

  • Patent number: 7188621
Abstract: A portable ventilator uses a ROOTS-type blower as a compressor to reduce both the size and power consumption of the ventilator. Various functional aspects of the ventilator are delegated to multiple subassemblies having dedicated controllers and software that interact with a ventilator processor to provide user interface functions, exhalation control and flow control servos, and monitoring of patient status. The ventilator overcomes noise problems through the use of noise reducing pressure compensating orifices on the ROOTS-type blower housing and multiple baffling chambers. The ventilator is configured with a highly portable form factor, and may be used as a stand-alone device or as a docked device having a docking cradle with enhanced interface and monitoring capabilities.

  • Patent number: 7188622
Abstract: A filtering face mask 10 that has a mask body and a new exhalation valve 14. The mask body is adapted to fit at least over the nose and mouth of a person to help define an interior gas space when the mask is worn. The exhalation valve 14 permits fluid communication between the interior gas space and an exterior gas space. The exhalation valve 14 has a valve seat 20 and a flap 22. The valve seat 20 includes a resilient seal surface 24 and an orifice 30 through which exhaled air may pass to leave the interior gas space. The flap 22 is mounted to the valve seat 20 such that the flap 22 makes contact with the resilient seal surface 24 when the valve is in its closed position and such that the flap 22 can move away from the seal surface 24 in response to an exhalation to allow exhaled air to pass through the orifice 30 to ultimately enter the exterior gas space.

Abstract: A respiratory suction catheter assembly includes a manifold supporting a rotatable swivel member for engagement with an endotracheal tube, and a seal support body disposed on a boss of the manifold opposite the part supporting the swivel for supporting a catheter tube seal and a porous filter for filtering air flowing into and out of a flexible elongated sheath enclosing the catheter tube. The sheath includes opposed tapered ends secured to the seal support body and to a boss on a suction control valve housing. The valve housing supports a tapered plug closure member engageable with a resilient actuator and a slide-lock member. Certain components, including the sheath, the seal support body, the filter, the catheter tube seal and the catheter tube may be treated with an anti-microbial agent.

Abstract: The ventilation interface for sleep apnea therapy interfaces a ventilation device to the patient's airways. The ventilation interface includes a pair of nasal inserts made from flexible, resilient silicone which are oval shaped in cross-section and slightly tapered from a base proximal the ventilation supply to the distal tip end. A bead flange is disposed about the exterior of each insert at the distal end of the insert. A bleed port for release of exhaled air is defined through a conical vent projecting normally to the path of the incoming air flow, and continues through a nipple extending to the exterior of the air conduit. In one embodiment, a pair of nasal inserts are integral with a nasal cannula body, with bleed ports axially aligned with each insert. In another embodiment, each insert is independently connected to a separate, thin-walled, flexible supply line.

Abstract: External ocular shields for protecting a patient's eyes from medical treatment radiation energy such as a laser during a medical procedure. Each shield has an external surface that absorbs energy that hits the shield. The shields are connected to each other by a nose piece, and the nose piece is connected to each shield by a mounting means. The mounting means are positioned perpendicular to the shields and parallel to each other so that the nose piece can pivot upward towards the user's forehead and downward towards the user's chin without altering the fit of the shields over the user's eyes.
