Abstract: A railroad car coupler centering device including in one embodiment a spreader beam mountable to the striker at one end of a railroad car, a right side centering spring rotatably connected to the spreader beam by a hinge, and a left side centering spring rotatably connected to the spreader beam by a hinge. The first or right side centering spring is moveable to and between a coupler engaged position and a coupler disengaged position. In the coupler engaged position, the right side centering spring is positioned to engage the right side of the coupler and to bias the coupler to a central position. In the coupler disengaged position, the right side centering spring allows the coupler to move from the center position to the right. Similarly, the left side centering spring is moveable to and between a coupler engaged position and a coupler disengaged position.

Abstract: A child's drinking container, e.g. sippie cup or baby bottle, uses a cover with a functionally integrated flexible cheek valve within an exiting fluid path for leakage protection. The valve is preferably a flexible check valve such as a crossbill. The valve comprises two or more flexible members that restrict the flow of fluid from a container during non-drinking situations. The flexible members of the valve limit pressurized flow and substantially prevent fluid from exiting while remaining normally closed. To open a valve section, external compressive force is applied (e.g., by a user's fingers or lips) which separates the flexible members allowing fluid to flow through, and encapsulated within a tubular drinking section having a fluid path and is attached to the exit end of the cover. An additional ventilation mechanism is added in various embodiments including a flexible air intake check valve added to the bottom of a baby bottle.

Abstract: A method for laser shock processing a device, including a metallic body having a surface, comprises conformally applying a compliant solid material to the first region on the surface of the metallic body and applying a layer of ablative material to the second region on the surface of the metallic body. A damping liquid is flowed over the layer of ablative material. An array of pulses of laser energy is directed through the damping fluid to impact the layer of ablative material on the surface and peen the surface in the second region. The pulses induce pressure waves within the metallic body which propagate to the surface in the first region. The compliant solid material acts as a momentum trap, so that the acoustic waves are at least partially coupled into the compliant solid material and attenuated outside of the metallic body.

Abstract: A welding stock storage rack made from wire mesh bent to form a pyramid has a trapezoidal cross section and planar, vertical ends. The wire mesh comprises elongate strands of steel wire laid in a rectangular grid and welded at each intersection to form a panel of regular, individual cells. Additional wire mesh forms end panels, completing a geometrically stable, three-dimensional structure. Welding stock of various types and sizes may be inserted longitudinally, transversely or both through the pyramid to be supported horizontally at various levels above the floor by opposing cells. Several of the racks may be concatenated end to end to form a longer rack for lengthier welding stock, and the racks may be nested when empty for inventorying, storage and transportation.

Abstract: In a heating fluid medium passing roller device for heat-treating a object to be processed in contact with the surface of a roller 1, heat exchanger devices 5a, 5b are arranged on a circulating heating fluid medium path, and the heating fluid medium heat-exchanged in the heat exchanger device is passed through the roller 1 having a jacked chamber 1b sealed with a gas-liquid two phase heating medium within its wall to keep the roller 1 at a predetermined temperature. Further, the heating fluid medium passing roller device includes a temperature sensor 13 for detecting the temperature of the heating fluid medium to be supplied into the roller 1 and a temperature sensor 14 for detecting the temperature of the heating fluid medium exhausted from the roller 1. The flow rate of the heating fluid medium to be supplied into the roller is adjusted so that the difference between the temperatures detected by the temperature sensors 13 and 14 is constant.

Abstract: An apparatus and methods for attaching electrical leads (22, 24) to a heating layer (16) of a heater are provided. An attachment material (50) is thermally sprayed over cords (32) of the electrical leads (22, 24), which are in contact with the heating layer (16) over a contact area (20). The attachment material (50) and the heating layer 16 are further thermally sprayed with a layer (52), which is an isolating material. The thermal sprayed connection between the electrical leads (22, 24) and the heating layer (16) thus provides more intimate contact and an improved electrical connection.
