  • Patent number: 7308400
Abstract: An arrangement for adapting statistical parsers to new data using a mathematical transform, particularly a Markov transform. In particular, it is assumed that an initial statistical parser is available and a batch of new data is given. The initial model is mapped to a new model by a Markov matrix, each of whose rows sums to one. In the unsupervised setup, where “true” parses are missing, the transform matrix is obtained by maximizing the log likelihood of the parses of test data decoded using the model before adaptation. The proposed algorithm can be applied to supervised adaptation, as well.

  • Patent number: 7308401
Abstract: An encoding device (200) includes an MDCT unit (202) that transforms an input signal in a time domain into a frequency spectrum including a lower frequency spectrum, a BWE encoding unit (204) that generates extension data which specifies a higher frequency spectrum at a higher frequency than the lower frequency spectrum, and an encoded data stream generating unit (205) that encodes to output the lower frequency spectrum obtained by the MDCT unit (202) and the extension data obtained by the BWE encoding unit (204). The BWE encoding unit (204) generates as the extension data (i) a first parameter which specifies a lower subband which is to be copied as the higher frequency spectrum from among a plurality of the lower subbands which form the lower frequency spectrum obtained by the MDCT unit (202) and (ii) a second parameter which specifies a gain of the lower subband after being copied.

  • Patent number: 7308402
Abstract: A scalable audio codec processes, quantizes and encodes audio signals into an embedded audio bitstream of bit-planes each having a data unit. The data unit has a beginning refinement bits partition, a second significance bits partition, a third sign boundary mark bits partition, and a fourth sign bits partition. The second and fourth partitions form a boundary for the third partition. The quantizing uses a variable length coding algorithm. The third partition is an invalid codeword for a predetermined encoding method being used to encode. The codec uses a decoder to decode the embedded audio bitstream of bit-planes using Reversible exponential Golomb (Exp-Golomb) codes in a Reversible Variable Length Code (RVLC) algorithm to produce quantized data of weighted subbands. An inverse quantizer dequantizes the quantized data into audio signals.

  • Patent number: 7308403
Abstract: A method for objective speech quality assessment that accounts for phonetic contents, speaking styles or individual speaker differences by distorting speech signals under speech quality assessment. By using a distorted version of a speech signal, it is possible to compensate for different phonetic contents, different individual speakers and different speaking styles when assessing speech quality. The amount of degradation in the objective speech quality assessment by distorting the speech signal is maintained similarly for different speech signals, especially when the amount of distortion of the distorted version of speech signal is severe. Objective speech quality assessment for the distorted speech signal and the original undistorted speech signal are compared to obtain a speech quality assessment compensated for utterance dependent articulation.

  • Patent number: 7308415
Abstract: A method for server allocation in a Web server “farm” is based on limited information regarding future loads to achieve close to the greatest possible revenue based on the assumption that revenue is proportional to the utilization of servers and differentiated by customer class. The method of server allocation uses an approach of “discounting the future”. Specifically, when the policy faces the choice between a guaranteed benefit immediately and a potential benefit in the future, the decision is made by comparing the guaranteed benefit value with a discounted value of the potential future benefit. This discount factor is exponential in the number of time units that it would take a potential benefit to be materialized. The future benefits are discounted because by the time a benefit will be materialized, things might change and the algorithm might decide to make another choice for a potential (even greater) benefit.

Abstract: A distributed data mining method and system includes a mediator and a plurality of agents, each of said plurality of agents having a local database. The mediator invokes the agents and each agent performs an attribute/value selection process. The agents pass their respective best attribute/value pair to the mediator and the mediator determines a winning agent from the submissions. The agents are notified of the winning selection and the winner then begins data splitting based on the willing attribute/value pair. The winning agent forwards a split information index to the mediator. The mediator provides the split information index to other, non-winning agents and the agents generate rules for the data mining.

Abstract: An apparatus, program product and method utilize the retrieval status of a resource to generate an access plan for a database query that uses the resource. The retrieval status, which indicates, for example, what percentage of a given resource is already stored in working memory, and thus need not be separately retrieved during query execution, may be used to generate more accurate input/output cost estimates for access plans, and thus enable a query optimizer to better select an access plan that is optimal under given runtime conditions.

Abstract: A self-adaptive resource management method and a corresponding system are proposed. In the solution of the invention, an authority (105) publishes multiple rules into a corresponding repository (115). Each rule defines a desired target configuration for a category of subjects (110). Some of the rules can be conditioned to an authorization for their application on the subjects (by means of an optional enabling code). Whenever a generic subject tries to apply a conditioned rule, a test is made to verify whether the application of the rule has been authorized for the subject; if not, the subject is considered not compliant with the rule for a lack of authorization.

Abstract: The present invention provides systems and methods for automating a search over a network such as the Internet. A user selects data such as text from within an application. The selected data is activated and a search is performed without the user having to leave the application. The search is performed while the user is continuing within the application. When the search is complete, the search results are made available to the user within the application from which the search was initiated. In one embodiment, the data is pre-searched and the results are cached such that the results are already available should the user desire. The present invention is particularly suited to integration with an operating system such that the methods of the present invention are thereby available to all applications. Alternatively, the present invention can be specific to a particular application.

Abstract: A method and system for representing an object in a network environment. The system uses web technology, preferably XML-technology, to receive and store information related to back-end resources and the objects managed by the resources. Initially a first schema document conforming to a property sheet definition, such as an XML document type definition, is used to define a property sheet, the property sheet having object-type information. Next, the two or more schema documents that conform to a property page definition, such as an XML document type definition, to thereby define a plurality of property pages are incorporated into the property sheet and the different property pages may originate from different resources. Using the property sheet and its associated property pages, a representation of the object may then be displayed.

  • Patent number: 7308444
Abstract: Conventional electronic information retrieval systems using specialist databases assume that the database being searched is appropriate to the search being conducted. The invention solves the problem that the above assumption may be incorrect. It does this by providing mechanisms (4, 4A and 4B) for identifying concepts respectively in: the search input question, a specialist database and a non-specialist database. A comparator 8 and associated mechanisms are able to analyze how the specialist database differs from the non-specialist database and to use this information to derive an indication of the ability of the specialist database to answer the input question. This indication can be fed to the user via interface 1 or in an alternative arrangement could be used to block inappropriate information.

  • Patent number: 7308445
Abstract: A computerized method is used to estimate the relative coverage of Web search engines. Each search engine maintains an index of words of pages located at specific URL addresses in a network. The method generates a random query. The random query is a logical combination of words found in a subset of the pages. The random query is submitted to a first search engine. In response a set of URLs of pages matching the query are received. Each URL identifies a page indexed by the first search engine that satisfies the random query. A particular URL identifying a sample page is randomly selected. A strong query corresponding to the sample page is generated, and the strong query is submitted to a second search engine. Result information received in response to the strong query is compared to determine if the second search engine has indexed the sample page, or a page substantially similar to the sample page.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus are disclosed for regular expression matching, especially for, but not limited to high-speed applications such as in a packet switching system (e.g., a router). One implementation includes a matching mechanism for processing each character of a plurality of input characters to progressively generate keyword indications of matched keywords as matched keywords are identified, and for generating one or more matching indications of matched base expressions and non-keyword expressions. These indications are received by a matched regular expression detection mechanism which generates one or more matched regular expression indications based on said one or more keyword indications and said one or more matching indications. In one implementation, the matched regular expression detection mechanism maintains a keyword data structure, which is updated as matched keyword indications are received to ensure they are matched in a proper order.

Abstract: Random samples without replacement are extracted from a distributed set of items by leveraging techniques for aggregating sampled subsets of the distributed set. This provides a uniform random sample without replacement representative of the distributed set, allowing statistical information to be gleaned from extremely large sets of distributed information. Subset random samples without replacement are extracted from independent subsets of the distributed set of items. The subset random samples are then aggregated to provide a uniform random sample without replacement of a fixed size that is representative of a distributed set of items of unknown size. In one instance, a multivariate hyper-geometric distribution is sampled by breaking up the multivariate hyper-geometric distribution into a set of univariate hyper-geometric distributions.

Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention provides a system that supports concurrent accesses to a skip list that is lock-free, which means that the skip list can be simultaneously accessed by multiple processes without requiring the processes to perform locking operations. During a node deletion operation, the system receives reference to a target node to be deleted from the skip list. The system marks a next pointer in the target node to indicate that the target node is deleted, wherein next pointer contains the address of an immediately following node in the skip list. This marking operation does not destroy the address of the immediately following node, and furthermore, the marking operation is performed atomically and thereby without interference from other processes.
