Abstract: A turbomachine has a shaft mounted in a shaft housing, and a rotor in a rotor housing at one end of the shaft, for compression, expansion, or transport of a working gas. The shaft is mounted by hydrostatic, gas-lubricated bearings that have a connector to a compressed gas line that is connected with a pressure region of the turbomachine. A portion of the gas that is passed from the pressure region is applied to the bearing. The shaft is mounted so that the bearing effect is at least extensively independent of the rotational speed of the shaft, thereby guaranteeing support of the shaft during startup of the turbomachine, and good rigidity and low sensitivity to pressure surge stresses. The pressure in the connector to the compressed gas line is at least 5 bar greater than the pressure in the region of the ventilation connector.

Abstract: A turbine (40) for a turbocharger (10) has a turbine housing (41) defining a generally annular chamber (43) surrounding a turbine wheel (44), the chamber receiving exhaust gas for driving the turbine wheel. The chamber has dividing walls (46) that divide the chamber into a plurality of angular sectors (43a,43b), each fed with exhaust gas separately from the other sector(s). (52,53) located radially inwardly of the sectors for guiding flow into the turbine wheel include at least dividing vanes (52) that form extensions of the dividing walls (46) so as to extend the sector-division of the exhaust gas flow path all the way to the trailing edges of the dividing vanes. An axially slidable piston (48) is disposed radially inwardly of the sectors, and radially overlaps with the dividing vanes (52). The vanes either are mounted on fixed structure and are received in slots (49) in the piston, or are mounted on the piston and received in slots in fixed structure.

Abstract: The nozzles are in the form of blowing-in openings in the housing wall which bounds the flow channel. The blowing-in openings are fed directly by means of air which is extracted from the flow channel downstream from the diffusor. This air is at a higher pressure than the flow in the flow channel upstream of the diffusor. This results in a passive, dynamic stabilization system for a compressor stage in the high pressure-ratio range, which does not require any additional control or actuating elements.

The Fe—Co based target material thus produced has a high density, while having a magnetic permeability lower than the conventional one.

Abstract: Metal aluminides are formed by an initial thermal deposition process which forms an intermediary material comprising elemental aluminum and another elemental metal, as well as an oxide of the other metal. The thermally formed intermediary material is subsequently heated to initiate an exothermic reaction which forms the metal aluminide material. The reaction may be initiated by localized or bulk heating of the intermediary material, and may involve reaction between the aluminum and elemental metal as well as a thermite reaction between the aluminum and the metal oxide. The resultant metal aluminide material may be substantially fully dense and may contain oxide strengthening precipitates such as aluminum oxide.

Abstract: A method and device related to a liquid product pressure and (optionally) temperature treatment method reduces the level of microorganisms in the liquid product to a preselected level. Utilizing the method, liquid product is diffused in a chamber with the speed of pressure variation of liquid product in one embodiment of about 109 Pa/sec. The preferred speed of the diffused drops is about 10 m/sec. The liquid product can optionally be heated before or during diffusion, and is preferably heated as a diffused liquid product by mixing it with superheated steam. The device includes a chamber and a diffuser in communication with the chamber.

Abstract: A chromatography and fluidic device with connections capable of automated component changing, diagnostic leak and current sensing. The chromatography-electrospray device contains a chromatography column, a pre-column, a spray emitter, or other fluidic component imbedded within one or more inserts. The inserts are robotically placed in receiving hardware, and a “plug and play” compression fitting connection mechanism makes the fluidic seals in an automated fashion. A plurality of sensors capable of detecting leaks is situated in the device near leak-prone regions. The electrospray emitter has a current sensing electrode in proximity of the electrospray region, capable of detecting the electrospray current. In conjunction with an electronics system, these sensors allow for system and component diagnostics. The diagnostic information may then be used for manual or automated system repair.
