  • Patent number: 7337022
Abstract: An optimization technique for use in driving a process plant controller, such as a model predictive controller, uses an organized, systematic but computationally simple method of relaxing or redefining manipulated, control and/or auxiliary variable constraints when there is no feasible optimal solution within pre-established constraints, to thereby develop an achievable solution for use by the controller. The optimization routine uses penalized slack variables and/or redefines the constraint model in conjunction with the use of penalty variables to develop a new objective function, and then uses the new objective function to determine a control solution that bests meets the original constraint limits.

  • Patent number: 7337038
Abstract: To determine whether a tool may be used successfully to fabricate a worksheet in a sheet fabrication machine, data relating to all tools that may be used for the machine as provided by the manufacturers of those tools are stored in a tool database. Dimensional data and characteristics of the worksheets that may be used by the machine are stored in a worksheet database. When a given worksheet is to be fabricated, a determination is made on whether a tool is usable for fabricating that worksheet without causing possible damage to the worksheet, the tool and its die, and/or the machine. The grind life remaining for the tool is used to determine whether the proper clearance between the tool and its die is obtainable by using the tool on the given worksheet. If it is determined that the tool is not useable for a given worksheet, the tool is flagged and reserved for use on worksheets that have a material thickness that is thinner than that of the given worksheet.

Abstract: Based on a detected or estimated value of an actual posture of a predetermined part, such as a body 3, of a robot 1 and a deviation the actual posture from a posture of a desired gait, a posture rotational deviation's variation is determined as the temporal variation of the deviation, and the position of the robot 1 (for example, the position where the robot comes into contact with a floor) is estimated on the assumption that the robot 1 rotates about a rotation center by the rotational deviation's variation. In addition, in accordance with the difference between the estimated position and the estimated position of the robot 1 determined by an inertial navigation method using an accelerometer or the like, the estimated position of the robot 1 determined by the inertial navigation method is corrected, thereby improving the precision of the estimated position.

  • Patent number: 7337047
Abstract: The inventive vehicle behavior control device employs a novel control strategy, suppressing deterioration of a vehicle behavior which would be induced during control processes, and being useful especially for correcting or inhibiting excessive deterioration of a vehicle behavior such as when a risk of rolling-over is detected. The device firstly judges if a possibility of rolling-over of the vehicle is high and calculates a target braking control amount for reducing the possibility of rolling-over in accordance with the result of the judgment of a possibility of rolling-over of the vehicle, where the target control amount when the possibility of rolling-over is high is set higher than when the possibility is low. Then, under control of the inventive control device, wheel braking force is controlled based upon the target braking control amount.

Abstract: Systems and apparatuses are provided for controlling the speed of a driver's vehicle either in a first adaptive cruise control mode or a second travel or stop mode. In one embodiment, there is provided an apparatus comprising a speed control unit that executes a follow-up control based at least in part on a target inter-vehicle distance between the driver's vehicle and a preceding vehicle (i.e., another vehicle in front of the driver's vehicle). The speed control unit executes adaptive cruise control when the driver requests the follow-up control while traveling at a speed equal to or higher than a first predetermined vehicle speed. The control unit executes stop-or-travel control when the driver requests the follow-up control while traveling at a speed equal to or lower than another predetermined vehicle speed lower than the first predetermined vehicle speed.

Abstract: A method for triggering an internal combustion engine of a certain type according to a state machine is provided, in which a possible operating state of the engine, which is assigned to a layer n of the state machine, is first set. In an additional layer (n+1), sub-states to the previously determined operating state are specified. For triggering different type engines, the method provides that the state machine has at least two groups of layers, the first group of layers representing operating states that the engine of the certain type has in common with engines of another type, and the second group of layers representing operating states that are specific to the engine of the certain type.

Abstract: An electromagnetic survey method for surveying an area of seafloor that is thought or known to contain a subterranean hydrocarbon reservoir, comprising obtaining a first survey data set with a vertical electric dipole (VED) antenna for generating vertical current loops and a second survey data set with a vertical magnetic dipole (VMD) antenna for generating horizontal current loops. In an alternative embodiment, the VMD antenna is dispensed with and the horizontal electromagnetic field is derived from the naturally occurring magnetotelluric (MT) electromagnetic field. In another alternative embodiment, the VED data is compared with a background geological model instead of VMD or MT data. The invention also relates to a survey apparatus comprising VED and VMD antennae, to planning a survey using this method, and to analysis of survey data taken using this survey method.

  • Patent number: 7337065
Abstract: This invention discloses several improved methods of correcting for atmospheric effects on a remote image of the Earth's surface taken from above, wherein the image comprises a number of simultaneously acquired images of the same scene, each including a large number of pixels, each at a different wavelength band, and including infrared through ultraviolet wavelengths. One method is for retrieving the aerosol/haze amount (i.e., visible range) from an assumed ratio of in-band reflectances, rather than from an assumed reflectance value. Another method is for identifying cloud-containing pixels. This is used to improve the calculation of the spatially averaged radiance L*e and reflectance ?e images in standard equations. Another method greatly reduces the number of mathematical operations required to generate the reflectance values.

Abstract: A system and method for automated baseline correction for Raman spectra is disclosed which may operate as a piecewise-linear baseline correction function. In an embodiment, a first set of data points from a Raman spectrum are determined to be baseline data points, a second set of data points from the Raman spectrum are determined to be baseline data points where the second set of data points are not contiguous with the first set of data points. The gap between the first and second set of data points is bridged by a straight line thereby forming an estimated baseline. The estimated baseline is smoothed and then subtracted from the Raman spectrum resulting in an adjusted-baseline Raman spectrum.

Abstract: A system and method for perceiving drilling learning through visualization is provided. In one embodiment using three-dimensional visualization of the earth model as a foundation, a new IT development strategy focuses on perceiving “Drilling Learning” by an intuitive method. Symbols, known as “Knowledge Attachments” are attached to each wellbore trajectory displayed in the three-dimensional environment, with each symbol indicating a specific event—such as one related to drilling operations or problems. A Knowledge Attachment system proves particularly useful to represent disparate data at once, in such a manner that the interdependencies between the earth model and drilling operational data are evident and correlated. Operational issues and lessons learned from prior wells are easily accessed and perceived in the context of the earth model. By understanding this information at the beginning of the well planning process, operational efficiencies may be improved.

Abstract: The method of the invention allows, by means of an iterative inversion algorithm, prediction of the spatial distribution of the lithologic composition of sediments deposited in a sedimentary basin during a geologic time interval, and the temporal evolution of the depositional profile throughout filling of the basin, while respecting exactly the thicknesses of the sedimentary sequences measured otherwise which is useful for locating hydrocarbon reservoirs. Input data of thickness maps of the sedimentary layer, location and composition of the sediment supply at the boundaries of the sedimentary basin, and physical parameters characterizing transport of the sediments during the period of consideration are applied to an iterative inversion loop initialized by the accommodation provided by a stationary multilithologic diffusive model which works as a fixed-point algorithm correcting the accommodations by means of a preconditioning of the residue on the sequence thicknesses obtained by an instationary model.
