Abstract: The specification discloses a method for affixing a strip to an underlying web substrate. According to the method, a substrate web having at least one surface is provided and at least one strip is applied over at least a portion of the substrate surface such that at least a significant portion of an underside surface of the strip disposed adjacent the substrate surface is unbounded to the substrate. A polymer coating is extruded over both the substrate surface and the strip. The strip is thereby affixed to the substrate surface by the coating while the portion of the underside surface of the strip remains substantially unbounded to the substrate surface. At the same time, a substantial portion of an upper surface of the strip adjacent the polymer coating layer is bonded to the coating layer. Also disclosed are packaging materials formed from the reinforced substrate.

Abstract: Coated paper product and method and apparatus for the production thereof. The paper product comprises a base paper, the porosity of which is at least 300 ml/min (Bentsen) and at least one side of which is coated with a pigment-bearing coating layer. The coating layer according to the present invention comprises a homogeneous film, which is formed of binder and pigments and which is brought onto the surface of the base paper using curtain coating so that the variation of the grammage of the layer is less than 5%, and so that the coating layer is not penetrated into the base paper, in which case the coating layer covers at least 95% of the surface of the base paper. By means of the present invention such a good coverage is achieved that the porosity of the base paper does not affect the gloss or smoothness of the coated paper, nor how the paper functions as a printing base.

Abstract: A boot/trunk opening in the vehicle body has a flange to which a looped sealing strip should be attached. However, when the boot/trunk lid is fixed to the vehicle body by hinge arms, these hinge arms prevent a pre-formed loop-shaped sealing strip being satisfactorily fitted to the flange. Disclosed herein is a sealing strip having a heat-bonding air-permeable foil attached to one end thereof. A sealing strip of this type can be supplied in strip form and threaded between the hinge arms and the vehicle body. The end of the sealing strip to which the foil is already attached is then bonded to the other end of the sealing strip by a bonding operation performed at the vehicle to form a looped sealing strip. An apparatus and method for performing this in situ bonding operation is disclosed. Apparatus for forming a sealing strip with a foil attached to one end thereof is also disclosed.

Abstract: Certain example embodiments of this invention relate to a composite lumber product include from about (i) 38-46% wood fiber, (ii) 0.2-5.0% foaming agent, and (iii) 46-60% polymer such as homopolymer polypropylene. Optionally, the lumber product may also include one or more of from about: (iv) 0.5 to 5% lubricant, (v) 0.5 to 6% pigment, and/or (vi) 0.4 to 5.0% coupling agent. Surprisingly, it has been found that such a composite lumber product is surprisingly less subject to moisture absorption thereby leading to a more stain resistant product and a product less likely to absorb moisture (less weight gain) during wet environmental conditions. Moreover, such a composite lumber product is easier to cut/saw, and easier to screw into, thereby leading to a more user-friendly product.

Abstract: The present invention provides a nanostructured substrate for SERS. A substrate of the invention comprises a surface featuring substantially monodisperse-sized metal nanoparticles disposed thereon. Preferably, the substrate surface provides for SERS and spectra therefrom. For example, a nanostructured substrate of the invention can be used to reproducibly and reliably detect or identify pathogens, molecules or combinations thereof. In one embodiment, a nanostructured substrate of the invention comprises a surface featuring metal nanoparticles substantially aggregated in clusters thereon. Exemplary metal nanoparticles disposed on the substrate surface can be silver, copper, gold or combinations thereof. Metal nanoparticles disposed on a substrate surface can also be substantially spheroidal comprising diameters in a range from about 40 to 120 nm.
