Abstract: Lean burn engines require an exhaust gas system comprising nitrogen oxide storage catalysts for removal of nitrogen oxides from their exhaust gases. When the lean burn engine is operated with a sulphur-containing exhaust gas, the storage catalysts have to be desulphurized from time to time. During the desulphurization, there is the risk of high pollutant emissions. These emissions can be reduced when the cylinders of the lean burn engine are combined in two groups which release their exhaust gas to two assigned exhaust legs, in each of which is arranged at least one nitrogen oxide storage catalyst. The two exhaust legs are combined beyond the storage catalysts to form a common exhaust leg which contains a catalyst which possesses a three-way function under stoichiometric conditions. The two nitrogen oxide storage catalysts are desulphurized offset in time with respect to one another.

Abstract: The invention is an Energy Storage Bridge (ESB) consisting of air-tight steel pipes, which are used to store the compressed air as stored energy, also used as the load carrying structural elements of the bridge. The stored energy can be the unwanted grid power or the intermittent regenerated energy sources. When the energy is needed, the compressed air is released to convert back to electricity, or to make use of the compressed air to produce hot water during its compression cycle, and cool air at its decompression and expansion cycle when it absorbs heat- an air conditioning technology called Air Cycle Air Conditioning (ACAC) widely used in commercial aircraft. For sea-crossing bridges, because of their great lengths the bridge body volume is enormous, and because of their remoteness from populated areas, they suit well for mass energy storage attached to power plants. With safety measures built in the steel pipes, the ESB can be applied to city road bridges.

Abstract: A heat pump having a cooling mode includes a cooling evaporator coupled to an advance flow and a backflow. The cooling evaporator is brought to a pressure such that a vaporization temperature of the working liquid in the backflow is below a temperature of an object to be cooled to which the backflow may be thermally coupled. In this manner, an area having vapor at high pressure is generated. This vapor is fed into a dynamic-type compressor which outputs the vapor at a low pressure and provides electrical energy in the process. The vapor at low pressure is fed to a cooling liquefier which provides vapor liquefaction at a low temperature, this temperature being lower than the temperature of the object to be cooled. The working liquid removed from the cooling evaporator due to the vaporization is refilled by a filling pump. The heat pump having a cooling mode also results when a specific heat pump is operated in the reverse direction, and provides cooling without any net use of electrical energy.
