  • Patent number: 7691271
Abstract: A compact hydrogen generator is coupled to or integrated with a fuel cell for portable power applications. Hydrogen is produced via thermocatalytic decomposition (cracking, pyrolysis) of hydrocarbon fuels in oxidant-free environment. The apparatus can utilize a variety of hydrocarbon fuels, including natural gas, propane, gasoline, kerosene, diesel fuel, crude oil (including sulfurous fuels). The hydrogen-rich gas produced is free of carbon oxides or other reactive impurities, so it could be directly fed to any type of a fuel cell. The catalysts for hydrogen production in the apparatus are carbon-based or metal-based materials and doped, if necessary, with a sulfur-capturing agent. Additionally disclosed are two novel processes for the production of two types of carbon filaments, and a novel filamentous carbon product. The hydrogen generator can be conveniently integrated with high temperature fuel cells to produce an efficient and self-contained source of electrical power.

  • Patent number: 7691275
Abstract: In some embodiments, the present invention is directed to methods that involve the combination of step-and-flash imprint lithography (SFIL) with a multi-tier template to simultaneously pattern multiple levels of, for example, an integrated circuit device. In such embodiments, the imprinted material generally does not serve or act as a simple etch mask or photoresist, but rather serves as the insulation between levels and lines, i.e., as a functional dielectric material. After imprinting and a multiple step curing process, the imprinted pattern is filled with metal, as in dual damascene processing. Typically, the two printed levels will comprise a “via level,” which is used to make electrical contact with the previously patterned under-level, and a “wiring level.” The present invention provides for the direct patterning of functional materials, which represents a significant departure from the traditional approach to microelectronics manufacturing.

  • Patent number: 7691285
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing magnetic nanoparticles which are made of metal oxide-polymer composites and are provided with an increased magnetic mobility, among other things, due the high metal oxide content and the morphological structure thereof. High-pressure homogenization has proven to be a reliable technique for producing the inventive magnetic nanoparticles. According to said technique, the components metal oxide and polymer are processed in a carrier medium. Water is used in most cases at pressures ranging from 500 bar to 1200 bar while using great shearing forces. High pressure homogenization creates a colloidally stable magnetic particle population having a diameter ranging below 200 nm while also resulting in the produced magnetic nanoparticles being provided with greater magnetic moments than the metal oxide used as an initial material at low magnetic field strengths.

Abstract: In a process for the manufacture of beadlet preparations of fat-soluble substances in a water-soluble or water-dispersible non-gelling matrix, an aqueous emulsion of the fat-soluble substance(s) and the matrix component are fed through a spray nozzle in the upper section of a vertical spray tower. Through separate inlets powderous starch and a stream of hot air are also fed in the upper section of the vertical spray tower. A stream of cold air is fed in the lower section of the spray tower so as to form a fluidised bed of starch-covered beadlets comprising the matrix component as well as the fat-soluble substances. The beadlets are collected from the fluidised bed and are discharged to a dryer.

Abstract: A method disclosed for producing polymer-based cantilevers for use in atomic force microscopy in a batch process. The method includes forming a mold in a mold material, for example PDMS, using a master cantilever, removing the master cantilever from the mold material to reveal a mold cavity, filling the mold cavity with plastic, for example polystyrene, to form a plastic cantilever in the mold, and removing the plastic cantilever from the mold, for example using adhesive tape or flexing the mold. At least one surface of the plastic cantilever can be coated with a reflective metal, such as gold. The plastic cantilever can be functionalized for use in magnetic force microscopy by attaching a probe tip formed of magnetic metal, for example a 10 ?m nickel sphere.

Abstract: A multi-cellular polypropylene container with a cut-scored region connecting the cells of the container is described. By varying the cut-score depths depending on the orientation of the plastic material, greater consistency in the tearability of the individual cells is achieved. One or more star-cut patterns may be provided between the cells. The star-cut patterns have curved edges that lead to the separation region. The curved edges provide a generally smooth surface that does not cut or snag the user.

Abstract: A piston stopper (2) made substantially of rubber has a piston section (8) enclosed in cap-like manner by an inert film (9) located adjacent to and facing the contents of a syringe or carpule cylinder (1). A non-vulcanized rubber sheet (7) is inserted into a form tool, together with an inert film (9). Under the effect of pressure and heat, an entire piston stopper contour is formed from the layered arrangement, extending to a flange (16) which protrudes laterally beyond the piston stopper (2) in the region of the separating plane of the form tool. A receiving cavity (6) for a piston rod is created in the piston section (8). The wall area of the sealing section (10) surrounding the receiving cavity (6) is forced into the receiving cavity (6). The piston stopper (2) is subsequently separated from the flange (16) in a blanking process, whereby a peripheral sealing area (13), directly adjacent to the edge of the inert film (9) enclosing the piston section (8), is formed in the sealing section (10).
