Abstract: The introduction of a heterogeneous solid substance, such as biomass, into a container which is under pressure is difficult. The rotary valves and airlocks used hitherto have substantial deficiencies. The use of standard screw conveyors has hitherto failed due to the fact that a cavity formed behind the screw helix in which gas could escape from the pressurized container. These deficiencies are resolved in that two independently controllable screws are arranged in a screw conveyor pipe. Between the primary screw driven by a motor and the secondary screw driven by another motor, the biomass is compacted by high pressure as a consequence of the different revolution speeds of the motors in such a way that an almost gas-tight plug is formed. The invention is particularly well-suited for the introduction of biomass into a gasification installation which is under pressure, for the production of synthesis gas.

Abstract: A protective boot useful for protecting the legs and hoofs of livestock. The protective boot can have a legging member and a shoe member. The legging member can be made of a durable fabric and fastened together around the leg of livestock with a fastening device. The shoe member can be made of a durable fabric or more rigid material with a cushioned bottom portion. The cushioned bottom portion can include a gel pad that is soft, supportive, and durable. The shoe member may be custom-fitted to a particular animal's hoof or to each of the animal's hooves. The cushioned bottom portion can protect the hoof of the animal from impact injuries caused by locomotion across various surface types. The legging member and shoe member of the protective boot may be separated by unfastening the fastener connecting them.

Abstract: An engine control system includes an injection determination module and an injection regulation module. The injection determination module determines a desired rate of hydrocarbon (HC) injection into exhaust gas produced by an engine for regeneration of a particulate matter (PM) filter. The injection regulation module increases a rate of HC injection from a first rate to the desired rate during a predetermined period before regeneration of the PM filter, wherein the predetermined period is based on a difference between a predetermined temperature and a temperature at an outlet of an oxidation catalyst (OC).

Abstract: An engine control system includes an injection determination module and an injection distribution module. The injection determination module determines a desired amount of hydrocarbons (HC) to inject into exhaust gas produced by an engine for regeneration of a particulate matter (PM) filter. The injection distribution module controls a ratio of auxiliary injection to post-combustion injection based on engine load, engine speed, and the desired amount of HC injection, wherein auxiliary injection includes injecting HC into the exhaust gas, and wherein post-combustion injection includes injecting HC into cylinders of the engine during a period after combustion.

Abstract: The use of nitrogen oxide storage catalysts in a close-coupled position for the cleaning of the exhaust gases from gasoline engines with direct gasoline injection which are operated with a predominantly lean air/fuel mixture places particular demands on the thermal stability and aging stability of the catalysts to be used. A nitrogen oxide storage catalyst is provided, which is suitable for this use and has two catalytically active coatings on a support body. The lower coating applied directly to the support body has a nitrogen oxide storage function and comprises platinum as a catalytically active component applied to a homogeneous magnesium-aluminum mixed oxide in combination with a nitrogen oxide storage material, in which a nitrogen oxide storage component is likewise present applied to a homogeneous magnesium-aluminum mixed oxide. The compositions of the magnesium-aluminum mixed oxides uses are different.

Abstract: A temperature sensor includes temperature detecting means and at least one of a catalyst and an adsorbent applied to the surface of the temperature detecting means. At least one of the catalyst and the adsorbent catalyzes an exothermic reaction of a reactant in gas on the temperature detecting means. A temperature that is increased by the exothermic reaction is detected by the temperature detecting means. The catalytic efficiency for the exothermic reaction of at least one of the catalyst and the adsorbent is reduced by sulfur poisoning. The temperature sensor is disposed upstream of an exhaust purification system. Accordingly, it is determined that the temperature sensor is subjected to sulfur poisoning if the temperature detected by the temperature sensor is below a prescribed temperature.
