Patent number: 8113179Abstract: An apparatus for injecting fuel into a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine. The apparatus includes a solid magnetostrictive material with a favored direction of magnetostrictive response formed into a shape with ends that are substantially parallel to each other and substantially perpendicular to the favored direction of magnetostrictive response. A fuel control valve element is located coaxial to the favored direction of magnetoelastic response of the magnetostrictive material, the element opening inwardly. A solenoid coil is located concentric with the magnetostrictive material and coaxial to the favored direction of magnetoelastic response, the solenoid coil adapted to excite the magnetostrictive material into mechanical motion. An excitation signal is provided within the solenoid coil consisting of a main current signal with a superposed alternating signal approximately the width of a hysteresis loop of the solid magnetostrictive material.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 2010Date of Patent: February 14, 2012Assignee: Great Plains Diesel Technologies, L.C.Inventor: Charles B. Patent number: 8113180Abstract: A method adjusts fuel injection to account for fuel puddling in the engine intake. The fuel is adjusted based on the ethanol content of the fuel in the puddle, and the make-up of the various fuel components in the puddle. In this way, it is possible to better account for the effects of these parameters on puddle evaporation.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 2011Date of Patent: February 14, 2012Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLCInventors: Mrdjan J. Patent number: 8113181Abstract: Method to provide fugitive gases to an engine. A source of fugitive gases is directed to the air intake of the engine. A fugitive gas pipe supplies the fugitive gases to the air intake and a vent allows the fugitive gases to vent to atmosphere. A check valve in the vent inhibits the flow of fugitive gases to the vent and allows the escape of the fugitive gases to the vent if the pressure of the fugitive gases exceeds a predetermined value.Type: GrantFiled: October 23, 2007Date of Patent: February 14, 2012Assignee: REM Technology Inc.Inventor: Howard Leigh Malm

Patent number: 8113183Abstract: The present invention reduces the overheating of sealed oil gear cases and excessive charge air temperatures at high engine speeds in automotive supercharger use by providing liquid cooling of one or more of the housings of a supercharger. Cooling the front cover of the supercharger will reduce the gear case temperatures under boost. Cooling the bearing housing will also reduce gear case temperatures in the adjacent gear case. Cooling the rotor housing, in combination with cooling of the rotors by a separate system, will maintain more uniform clearances under continuous boost, as with racing and autobahn applications. Cooling may be by traditional liquid coolant or with oil, and with separate or combined systems. The invention discloses liquid coolant systems for controlling sealed gear case lubricant temperatures as well as supercharger charge air temperatures if desired. Combined coolant handling and flow systems and their advantages are also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: July 24, 2008Date of Patent: February 14, 2012Assignee: GM Global Technology Operations LLCInventors: Gregory P. Patent number: 8113185Abstract: A device for separating oil includes a blow-by gas passage provided to a head cover to discharge blow-by gas introduced from an engine and a separator coupled to the blow-by gas passage to separate oil from the blow-by gas. The device for separating oil from blow-by gases can effectively separate oil from the blow-by gas. Since the blow-by gas passage for discharging the blow-by gas is provided to the head cover, a hose or a pipe is not required to carry the blow-by gas, and thereby the engine can be designed to be compact.Type: GrantFiled: January 15, 2009Date of Patent: February 14, 2012Assignees: Hyundai Motor Company, Kia Motor CorporationInventor: Kye Oong Song
