Patent number: 8211039Abstract: In a medical guide wire 1, a flexible core wire 2 is made of austenitic stainless steel wire treated with a solid solution procedure, and drawn with a whole cross sectional reduction ratio as 90%-97.6%. Each time when the core wire 2 is subjected to a series of mechanical procedures, the core wire 2 is heat treated repetitively at low temperature subsequent to the mechanical procedures to improve a tensile strength characteristic of the core wire 2. The core wire 2 is twisted under the low heat treatment. Effectively used is a heat generated from a synthetic layer 6 when coating the layer 6 on the helical spring body 3. This makes it possible to increase the characteristic of the tensile strength of the core wire 2 with its thermal conductivity taken into consideration. Upon improving the tensile strength of the core wire 2, optimal conditions are achieved by observing a relationship between the tensile strength and the temperature which the core wire 2 exhibits when tightly drawn as a wrought-out procedure.Type: GrantFiled: September 16, 2010Date of Patent: July 3, 2012Assignee: PatentStra Co., Ltd.Inventor: Tomihisa Kato

Patent number: 8211041Abstract: Systems, devices, and methods are provided for measuring forces in the space of a knee during surgery. Such forces can be caused by tension in the ligaments of the knee. A femoral member is engaged with a distal femur. While the knee is flexed, partially extended, or fully extended, a force sensor and a gauge shim can be placed in the gap between the femoral member and the tibial plateau to measure the forces therebetween. The force sensor provides an accurate and quantifiable measurement of force, making knee replacement surgery and ligament tension balancing more accurate, standardized and repeatable. The force sensor comprises an elongate housing which comprises a thin force sensing distal portion and a proximal handle portion.Type: GrantFiled: August 20, 2009Date of Patent: July 3, 2012Assignee: Synvasive Technology, Inc.Inventors: Michael G. Patent number: 8211042Abstract: A high torque active mechanism for an orthotic and/or prosthetic joint using a primary brake which can be provide by magnetorheological (MR) rotational damper incorporating and an additional friction brake mechanism driven by the braking force generated by the MR damper. This combination of MR damper and friction brake mechanism allows an increase in torque density while keeping the same level of motion control offered by the MR damper alone. The increased torque density achieved by this high torque active mechanism allows to minimize the size of the actuating system, i.e. its diameter and/or breath, while maximizing its braking torque capability. In this regard, the friction brake mechanism is advantageously positioned around the MR damper, such that the dimension of the package is minimized.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 2008Date of Patent: July 3, 2012Assignee: Victom Human Bionics Inc.Inventors: Benoit Gilbert, David Landry

Patent number: 8211045Abstract: A novel ankle gapping device includes a lower leg engaging apparatus, a foot engaging apparatus, and a biasing member disposed between the lower leg engaging apparatus and the foot engaging apparatus. The leg engaging apparatus is adapted to securely engage a user's leg such that the leg engaging apparatus will remain stationary when the biasing member exerts an upward force thereon. The foot engaging apparatus is contoured to fit the user's foot. In a particular embodiment, the biasing member is a pneumatic biasing member, such as an inflatable tube that is actuated by a pump. As the pump provides compressed air (or some other fluid) to the biasing member, the pressure inside the biasing member increases, causing an increase in the volume of the biasing member. This pressure and volume increase exerts an upward force via the leg engaging apparatus to the lower leg, and a downward force via the foot engaging apparatus to the foot.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 2009Date of Patent: July 3, 2012Inventors: Arnis Pone, John D. Patent number: 8211046Abstract: Devices and methods are disclosed for achieving control and stabilization of bone fractures in mammals, most specifically humans. Stabilization and traction is often required to support fractured bones of the arms or legs. The devices and methods disclosed herein are especially useful in the emergency or military setting. The devices utilize a collapsible frame or inflatable member that may be expanded and locked into position. The frame or inflatable member is fabricated primarily from polymeric materials with low radiodensity. The limb contact regions are adjustable to fit a wide variety of limb sizes and fracture locations. The traction applied by the splint is adjustable, controllable and measurable. The traction splint is sufficiently compact that it will fit in a compartment of most ambulances and emergency rescue vehicles, thus making it more available for use than standard traction splints in use today. The traction splint is either a separate device or integrated into a backboard.Type: GrantFiled: May 3, 2011Date of Patent: July 3, 2012Assignee: Damage Control Surgical Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Robert F. Patent number: 8211053Abstract: There are many medical situations that require removal of fluid from a patient. There are many ways to remove the fluid but many of these situations have not been solved. Herein, inventions are disclosed that generate osmotic pressure that can be used to remove these fluids very effectively, a technique which requires no harsh suction or pumping. One embodiment involves implanting a reservoir that has a semipermeable membrane sidewall. The reservoir contains trapped osmotic solutes that can not pass out through the membrane. But fluid from the patient can flow in. The osmotic pressure from the trapped solutes in the reservoir draws fluid from the patient across the semipermeable membrane and into the device. In some versions, the membrane can be changed as desired during the lifetime of the device by pulling the membrane out through the implanted device and putting a new one back in.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 2008Date of Patent: July 3, 2012Assignee: Equilibrate, LLCInventor: Curtis B. Patent number: 8211070Abstract: A safety IV catheter includes a unitary, resilient needle guard received in a catheter hub. The needle guard includes a proximal arm or wall that includes an opening through which a needle passes for axial movement. When the needle is retracted from the catheter, it releases the force that had previously prevented movement of the needle guard within the catheter hub. This in turn causes the needle guard to snap into a position in which it is clamped onto the needle shaft and in which its distal wall blocks access to the needle tip. In this condition, the spring needle guard and needle can be removed from the catheter hub. A slot or crimp may be formed in the needle shaft that engages with the needle guard after the protected needle and needle guard are removed from the catheter hub, thereby to prevent removal of the protected needle from the needle guard.Type: GrantFiled: December 12, 2003Date of Patent: July 3, 2012Assignee: B. Patent number: 8211083Abstract: A method, technique and system is disclosed for the delivery of therapeutic agents and/or into the bulk brain tissues and other parts, tissues and organs of the body, including vasculature. A novel form of coaxial catheter provides a means for implanting an outer tube into the brain, then inserting an inner tube into the outer tube and aligning them such that port holes on both of the tubes will overlap and permit a flux of the therapeutic agent to flow into the brain in such a way as to minimize the effects of trapped air, virtually eliminate backflow of the agent, and avoid the potential for additional damage to the brain since only one surgical placement of the outer tube is needed. Similarly, the method, technique system may be utilized to remove fluids or other medium from the brain, tissues, and organs to minimize the effects of escaped air or negative pressure.Type: GrantFiled: April 15, 2010Date of Patent: July 3, 2012Assignees: University of Virginia Patent Foundation, Virginia Commonwealth University Intellectual Property FoundationInventors: William C.
