Abstract: A bidirectional jarring tool that allows repetitive firing in one direction without firing the tool in the opposite direction. One of the tubular members provides up and down anvil surfaces, and the other member provides up and down hammer surfaces. Inner and outer tubular members define a hydraulic chamber with a restricted section that divides the chamber into an upper section and a lower section. Upper and lower pistons, each with a valved flow channel, reciprocate through the restricted section to produce up and down jarring impacts. When the restricted section is disposed between the upper and lower pistons, the tool is in a neutral position and can be jarred repetitively in either direction.

Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are provided for determining injected fluid vertical placement in a formation. The apparatus includes a borehole drilled through a formation, and an injection conduit within the borehole. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes a fiber optic cable within the borehole wrapped helically around the injection conduit such that the fiber optic cable reads temperatures at specific depths and radial angles throughout the borehole. The apparatus includes a thermal insulation layer interposed between the injection conduit and the fiber optic cable such that the fiber optic cable detects the formation temperature rather than the injection conduit temperature. The apparatus includes a computer programmed to determine the vertical placement of the injected fluid within the formation based on the temperature readings. The apparatus detects an induced hydraulic fracture height, and detects whether an induced hydraulic fracture has deviated from the plane of the borehole.

Abstract: Reservoir fractures are characterized directly in situ without need to acquire and analyze formation sample cores. A magnetic fluid is injected into an isolated section of the reservoir. The magnitude and directional properties of the enhanced magnetic susceptibility in the section where magnetic fluid injection occurs is measured with a down hole magnetometer. Logs obtained of the enhanced magnetic susceptibility are analyzed to characterize fractures, and petrophysical properties of interest, such as porosity, permeability, and permeability anisotropy of the formation in the vicinity of the fluid injection.

  • Patent number: 8230923
Abstract: The migration of coal fines within a bed is reduced, inhibited or constrained by contacting the fines with nanoparticles, such as magnesium oxide crystals having an average particle size of about 30 nm. These nanoparticles may coat a proppant during the fracturing of a subterranean formation to produce methane from a coal bed therein. The nanoparticles may also treat a proppant pack in a fractured coal bed. The nanoparticles cause the coal fines to thus bind to or associate with the proppants. Thus, most of the coal fines entering fractures away from the near-wellbore region will be restrained or controlled near their origin or source and the production of methane at a desired level will be maintained much longer than a similar situation than where the nanoparticles are not used.

Abstract: A fracturing and gravel packing tool has features that prevent well swabbing when the tool is picked up with respect to a set isolation packer. An upper or jet valve allows switching between the squeeze and circulation positions without risk of closing the wash pipe valve. The wash pipe valve can only be closed with multiple movements in opposed direction that occur after a predetermined force is held for a finite time to allow movement that arms the wash pipe valve. The jet valve can prevent fluid loss to the formation when being set down whether the crossover tool is supported on the packer or on the smart collet.

Abstract: A method for minimizing the amount of metal crosslinked viscosifier necessary for treating a wellbore with proppant or gravel is given. The method includes using fibers to aid in transporting, suspending and placing proppant or gravel in viscous carrier fluids otherwise having insufficient viscosity to prevent particulate settling. Fibers are given that have properties optimized for proppant transport but degrade after the treatment into degradation products that do not precipitate in the presence of ions in the water such as calcium and magnesium. Crosslinked polymer carrier fluids are identified that are not damaged by contaminants present in the fibers or by degradation products released by premature degradation of the fibers.
