  • Patent number: 8231284
Abstract: A novel parallel optical module having combined optical signal transmit and receive function for high-speed performance. The optical module includes a plurality, e.g., sixteen 10-Gb/s transmitter and receiver channels for a 160-Gb/s bidirectional aggregate data rate. The module utilizes a single-chip CMOS optical transceiver containing both transmitter and receiver circuits. 16-channel high-speed photodiode (PD) and VCSEL arrays are flip-chip attached to the low-power CMOS IC. The substrate emitting/illuminated VCSEL and PD arrays operate at 985 nm and include collimating lenses integrated into the backside of the substrate. The IC-OE assembly is then flip-chip attached to a high density organic package forming the transceiver optical module. The exclusive use of flip-chip packaging for both the IC-to-optoelectronic (OE) devices and for the IC-to-organic package minimizes the module footprint and associated packaging parasitics.

  • Patent number: 8231287
Abstract: An image reproduction device for document processing has a nominal processing speed at which it can process sheets continuously at a nominal document quality. However, the image reproduction device is arranged to process sheets at a continuously variable processing speed including the nominal processing speed. The actual processing speed is selected in dependence on operational conditions. In particular, the device is arranged to gradually adjust the processing speed from one processing speed to another processing speed. A control structure is given to select the variable processing speed in dependence on operational conditions, and to operate the image reproduction device at the selected processing speed. In a particular application of the variable speed, a print job may be started at an increased processing speed and then gradually fall back to the nominal speed, giving a fast start and a shorter processing time for short print jobs.

  • Patent number: 8231292
Abstract: An apparatus for modifying a keratinous surface that has a rotatable applicator that is in fluid communication with a first modification composition. The apparatus also has a sensor and a CPU. The sensor is positioned forward of the applicator head such that as the head rolls across the keratinous surface the sensor reads the portion of the keratinous surface in front of the rolling head. The sensor readings are transmitted to the CPU, the CPU analyzes the sensor readings of the keratinous surface, and the CPU sends a signal to the applicator head to treat or not to treat the analyzed surface. When the CPU sends a signal to the applicator to treat the surface, a small portion of the first modification composition is applied to the head such that when the head rolls over the keratinous surface the first modification composition contacts the area of the keratinous surface that needs treatment.

  • Patent number: 8231317
Abstract: A fastening clamp for connecting a carrier part (13) and an add-on part (14) has a plug-through leg (1), with a plug-through sleeve (5), and a threaded leg (2), which is connected to a thread unit (10). The plug-through sleeve (5) extends away from the threaded leg (2) and has an effective overall height which is greater than the thickness of an add-on part (14). Engagement elements (11) are present on that side of the thread leg (2) which is directed towards the plug-through leg (1). In a pre-assembly arrangement, the legs (1, 2) are spaced apart by a distance which is large enough to allow a carrier part (13) to be positioned between the legs (1, 2) such that it is essentially free of engagement with the engagement elements (11), in which case, once a screw has been screwed into an end position, the engagement elements (11) thus engage with the carrier part (13) such that the fastening clamp is connected in a non-displaceable manner to the carrier part (13).

  • Patent number: 8231327
Abstract: A river high pressure energy conversion machine which has no moving parts, comprising a machine (or pump) having a pipe attached to a river bed, with a flexible pipe to an enlarged water inlet attached to the underside of a float, to assure entrance of water just below the river water surface. A discharge pipe from the machine rises above the river bank to a water-driven accessory, through a stop valve and a pressure regulating valve. The discharge pipe from the accessory discharges river water back to the river. Water stacks up inside the sloping machine pipe on the river bed, and creates higher water pressure at the machine pipe outlet for driving the accessory. This is a continuous process, generating electricity twenty-four hours every day, using only gravity as the pressurizing force on water to generate electricity, without using fossil, nuclear or artificial energy forces.

Abstract: A fan casing for a gas turbine engine has a fan track liner extending only over an upstream part of the fan blades, and the local stiffness and internal shape of the casing are arranged to promote the break-up of a released fan blade while permitting the leading edge region of the blade to pass through the fan track liner and be contained by the fan casing. This arrangement is particularly suitable for fan blades in which the stiffness and compressive strength are significantly higher in the leading edge region than in the remainder of the blade; for example, hollow metal fan blades or composite fan blades having a metal leading edge cap.
