Abstract: An earring backing assembly including an earring post having a locking groove, a body, a handle and a spring. The spring is mounted on the handle. The handle is fitted within the body such that the spring presses at one end against the handle and at another end against the body. Together the handle and the body maintain an opening for receiving the earring post with the handle maintaining a locking ridge within the opening. The spring biases the locking ridge towards the center of the opening. When the handle is depressed against the pressure of the spring, the handle pivots, moving the locking ridge away from the center of the opening allowing for the earring post to be inserted into the opening. When the handle depression is released, the spring bias returns the locking ridge back towards the center of the opening, engaging the locking groove of the post.

Abstract: The application describes techniques for monitoring the rate of flow of fluid in a conduit (205) using fibre optic distributed acoustic sensing which are especially applicable to flow in oil and gas wells. The techniques also allow for calibration of the position of the channels of a fibre optic distributed acoustic sensor arranged along a fluid carrying conduit. The techniques comprise introducing a first acoustic stimulus (303) travelling in one direction and a second acoustic stimulus (304) travelling in the opposite direction. Flow of the fluid (v) results in a difference in the propagation velocity of the two acoustic stimuli. The first and second acoustic stimuli create a standing wave and the beat effect due to the flow induced wavelength variation is detected and used to determine flow rate. The acoustic stimulus may be introduced to travel through the conduit to provide the first stimulus and to reflect from the end of the conduit and travel back as the second acoustic stimulus.

Abstract: A method for operating a soot sensor that has an interdigital electrode structure, to which a measurement voltage is applied. Soot particles from an exhaust gas flow are deposited onto the interdigital electrode structure and the measurement current is evaluated as a measure of the soot load of the soot sensor. The interdigital electrode structure is burned clean at or above a predetermined soot load, which is detected by means of an upper current threshold. The method includes burning the interdigital electrode structure clean by heating up the soot sensor after the upper current threshold has been reached; monitoring the measurement current while the interdigital electrode structure is being burned clean; and stopping the burning clean when the value of the measurement current has reached a lower current threshold.

A fuel-vapor pressure-rise rate is recorded with an engine of a motor vehicle turned “off.” A value is recorded that directly correlates with an out-gassing affect created by a volume, blend, and temperature of fuel. A “purge” cycle occurs at idling of the vehicle within a short period of time. The engine applies a vacuum to a fuel-delivery system of the vehicle. Vacuum decay is recorded. A leak rate is determined by off-setting the recorded fuel-vapor pressure-rise rate with the recorded vacuum decay.
