Abstract: The description herein relates to pilot designs for an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) based communication system. In at least one embodiment, the communication system is one operating according to the IEEE 802.16m, or WiMax, standard. In general, an OFDM transmitter operates to insert pilot symbols into a resource of a transmit frame according to a predetermined staggered pilot symbol pattern defining pilot symbol locations within the resource of the transmit frame. The predetermined pilot symbol pattern is defined such that pilot symbols are located at or near time boundaries of the resource, at or near frequency boundaries of the resource, or both. By doing so, when generating a channel estimate for the communication channel between the OFDM transmitter and an OFDM receiver based on the pilot symbols, extrapolations needed to estimate the channel near the boundaries of the resource are optimized, thereby improving overall channel estimation accuracy.

Abstract: Coding techniques for a video image compression system involve improving an image quality of a sequence of two or more bi-directionally predicted intermediate frames, where each of the frames includes multiple pixels. One method involves determining a brightness value of at least one pixel of each bi-directionally predicted intermediate frame in the sequence as an equal average of brightness values of pixels in non-bidirectionally predicted frames bracketing the sequence of bi-directionally predicted intermediate frames. The brightness values of the pixels in at least one of the non-bidirectionally predicted frames is converted from a non-linear representation.

Abstract: A motion compensation image processing apparatus includes an external memory, a cache, a motion compensation module, a determination module and a fetching module. The external memory stores a reference frame associated with an image block. The motion compensation module sequentially performs motion compensation on a previous image block and the image block. When the motion compensation module performs motion compensation on the previous image block, the determination module determines a motion vector relative to the reference frame. Before the motion compensation module performs motion compensation on the image block, the fetching module fetches a reference region, corresponding to the motion block, in the reference frame from the external memory to the cache.

Abstract: A method for coding a current block using a parametric motion model whose parameters are defined from the motion data of the causal neighbourhood is disclosed. Specifically, the method for coding the current block comprises the following steps: determine a prediction block of the current block from a motion model defined by a set of parameters, the model associating a motion vector pointing at a pixel of a prediction block with each pixel of the current block. calculate a residual block between the current block and the prediction block, and code the residual block. According to the invention, the parameters of the motion model are determined from the motion data associated with the causal neighbourhood blocks of the current block. Therefore, they can be deducted from parts of images already coded and do not need to be incorporated in the image data stream.
