  • Patent number: 8747997
Abstract: A coating composition, system, and method for printing documents that are difficult to chemically or physically forge and that are easy to visually verify are disclosed. The system includes a substrate, a toner, including a colorant and a dye, a coating including fluorescent material, e.g., a primary migration-enhancing coating, applied using an offset printing process and optionally a secondary migration-enhancing coating applied using an offset printing process. An image formed using the toner of the invention is readily verified by comparing a colorant-formed image and a dye-formed image and/or to a reverse negative imaged formed by the dye quenching the fluorescent material. In addition, if a solvent is used in an attempt to alter the printed image on the substrate, the dye migrates or diffuses to indicate tampering with the document.

  • Patent number: 8748018
Abstract: A patterned perpendicular magnetic recording medium, such as a disk for use in hard disk drives, has a flux channeling layer (FCL) located below the recording layer (RL) in each of the discrete data islands. The disk includes a substrate, a soft underlayer (SUL) of soft magnetically permeable material on the substrate, and a nonmagnetic exchange break layer (EBL) on the SUL. A nonmagnetic separation layer (SL) is located between the FCL and the RL in the islands. The FCL has an anisotropy field substantially lower than the anisotropy field of the RL, and a magnetization equal to or higher than the magnetization of the RL. The FCL is saturated at a much lower field than the RL and thus channels the magnetic flux from the write head through the island positions. The dipolar fields from the RL above the FCL polarize the magnetization of the FCL parallel to the magnetization direction of the RL in the absence of an external field, to thereby enhance the readback signal.

  • Patent number: 8748024
Abstract: A battery comprises a battery housing and an electrode which is accommodated in the battery housing. Outer faces of the battery housing substantially form the shape of a hollow body which has an accommodation space for accommodating at least a substantial portion of a device which is to be supplied with power by the battery. An outer casing surface of the battery housing can therefore form a portion of a housing of the device. Since the battery housing protects both the active portion of the battery enclosed therein and the components of the device accommodated in the accommodation space of the battery, and a separate device housing and battery housing can therefore be largely avoided, there is a resultant saving in weight and volume. The freedom of design for devices which are provided with batteries is also increased.

Abstract: The invention relates to a particular multi-layer microporous membrane having a good balance of important properties, including excellent electrochemical stability and low heat shrinkage, while maintaining high permeability and heat resistance, with good mechanical strength, compression resistance and electrolytic solution absorption. Of particular importance when used as a battery separator, the present multi-layer microporous membrane exhibits excellent heat shrinkage, melt down temperature and thermal mechanical properties, i.e. low maximum shrinkage in the molten state. The multi-layer microporous membrane of the present invention is manufactured by layering, such as for example by coextrusion, one or more microporous membrane first layers and one or more microporous membrane second layers, such as on one or both sides of a first layer. The invention further relates to battery separators comprising the multi-layer microporous membrane and batteries utilizing the battery separators.
