Abstract: An engine based on a reciprocating piston engine that extracts work from pressurized working fluid. The engine includes a double reed outlet valve for controlling the flow of low-pressure working fluid out of the engine. The double reed provides a stronger force resisting closure of the outlet valve than the force tending to open the outlet valve. The double reed valve enables engine operation at relatively higher torque and lower efficiency at low speed, with lower torque, but higher efficiency at high speed.

Abstract: This disclosure provides system and method that can determine hydraulic start of injection (SOI) in engines using an in-cylinder pressure sensor. The system and method iteratively perform a wavelet transform on a signal based on the pressure information provided by the in-cylinder pressure sensors to determine a detail coefficient corresponding to a frequency band containing frequencies of pressure pulsations excited from a fuel jet injected into the cylinder. Hydraulic SOI is determined at the timing when the amplitude of the determined detail coefficient satisfies a predetermined threshold. The system and method provide diagnostic, control, and/or compensation opportunities for fuel injector operation in high pressure fuel rail engine systems without use of expensive or complex fuel injector components.

The benefit of modifying fueling in this manner is that fueling by each fuel injector 38 is balanced independent of actual measurements of fuel delivery, simplifying the process of correcting cylinder-to-cylinder fueling imbalances. The described system and method require no intrusion into a fueling system of the engine and uses currently existing components.

Abstract: A fuel control system and method for providing fuel to an internal combustion engine are provided. The fuel control system generally includes at least one valve device structured to deliver a fuel supply to the engine, a first fuel source structured to provide a primary fuel to the valve device, a second fuel source structured to provide an alternate fuel to the valve device, and an electronic controller structured to control the valve device. The electronic controller controls the valve device as a function of various data to selectively deliver the primary fuel and the alternate fuel to generate a fuel supply, e.g. as a mixture of the two fuels. The data used to control the fuel supply may include GPS data, engine data, environmental data, and/or other operational data.

Abstract: A device for transferring energy to propel a payload with added velocity after launch includes a first component having a mass (m1), and a second component having a mass (m2). As an assembly, the first and second components are positioned to establish a compression chamber between them that is dimensionally responsive to their relative movements. And, a payload is mounted on a selected component of the assembly. In operation, a driving force is exerted against one component of the assembly to propel the entire assembly along a predetermined flight path. Contemporaneously with this acceleration, the two components are moved toward each other. In turn, this compresses gas in the gas chamber to generate potential energy that is transferred as the gas expands to separate the payload from the assembly with added velocity.

Abstract: A man-powered system for pneumatically launching a pellet cluster includes a cartridge for holding the pellet cluster. A hollow propulsion shaft receives the cartridge for substantially free travel back and forth in the shaft to establish a variable-volume compression chamber in the shaft, between the cartridge and a closed end of the shaft. When a driving force acts to launch the combination of cartridge and shaft, the cartridge moves to compress gas in the compression chamber for a subsequent expansion that will propel the cartridge forward through the shaft. After launch, the compressed gas acts to separate the pellet cluster from the cartridge and to provide a pneumatic assist that increases the velocity of pellets after separation.
