Publication number: 20140347651Abstract: A probe including a multiple lens array is disclosed to measure velocity distribution of a moving surface along many lines of sight. Laser light, directed to the moving surface is reflected back from the surface and is Doppler shifted, collected into the array, and then directed to detection equipment through optic fibers. The received light is mixed with reference laser light and using photonic Doppler velocimetry, a continuous time record of the surface movement is obtained. An array of single-mode optical fibers provides an optic signal to the multiple lens array. The method also includes varying an injection current of the laser based on a predefined current-time function in order to tune the wavelength of the laser in a tuning range using a specific absorption line of the gas component. The method further includes modulating the function with a modulation signal having a frequency and alternately a first modulation amplitude and a second modulation amplitude. The method also includes evaluating a detector signal generated by the detector for determining (1) the concentration of the gas component upon the modulation with the first modulation amplitude and (2) the wavelength stabilization of the laser upon the modulation with the second modulation amplitude at the second harmonic of the frequency.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 20, 2014Publication date: November 27, 2014Applicant: Siemens AktiengesellschaftInventor: Daniel Depenheuer

Publication number: 20140347669Abstract: Flow cytometry concepts are modified to enable dynamic characterizations of particles to be obtained using optical scattering data. Particles in flow will be introduced into a sample volume. Light scattered by a particle in the sample volume is collected and analyzed. What differentiates the concepts disclosed herein from conventional flow cytometry is the use of an acoustic source that is disposed to direct acoustic energy into the sample volume. As the particle passes through the sample volume, it responds to the acoustic energy, causing changes in the light scattered by the particle. Those changes, which are not measured during conventional flow cytometry, can be analyzed to determine additional physical properties of the particle.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 23, 2013Publication date: November 27, 2014Applicant: University of WashingtonInventors: Thomas J. Publication number: 20140347671Abstract: In one embodiment, a Sagnac interferometer-type fiber-optic sensor includes a synchronous detection circuit to carry out synchronous detection of detected light signal with a phase modulation angular frequency of a phase modulator. A signal processing circuit calculates and outputs the magnitude of current to be measured using the signal detected in the synchronous detection circuit. A phase modulator driving circuit controls the driving of the phase modulator. The phase modulator driving circuit controls a phase modulation depth of the phase modulator so that the amplitude of the second-order harmonics and the fourth-order harmonics obtained by carrying out the synchronous detection of the detected light signal with the phase modulation angular frequency becomes the same.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 8, 2014Publication date: November 27, 2014Applicant: Kabushiki Kaisha ToshibaInventors: Kinichi SASAKI, Masao TAKAHASHI, Yukihisa Hirata

Publication number: 20140347672Abstract: The disclosed invention describes a new apparatus performing a new data acquisition for quantitative refractive index tomography. It is based on a linear scanning of the specimen, opposed to the classical approaches based on rotations of either the sample or the illumination beam, which are based on the illumination with plane waves, which orientation is successively modified in order to acquire angular information. On the contrary, the inventive apparatus and method rely on a specially shaped illumination, which provides straightforwardly an angular distribution in the illumination of the specimen. The specimen can thus be linearly scanned in the object plane in order to acquire the data set enabling tomographic reconstruction, where the different positions directly possess the information on various angles for the incoming wave vectors.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 30, 2012Publication date: November 27, 2014Applicant: ECOLE POLYTECHNIQUE FEDERALE DE LAUSANNE (EPFL)Inventors: Nicolas Pavillon, Christian Depeursinge

Publication number: 20140347675Abstract: A method and apparatus for detecting a projectile or another moving object as it passes through a light curtain generated by one or more emitters, by the means of detecting the light of the light curtain reflected by the passing object onto a detector located in proximity to the emitter. The projectile or object sensing area of the apparatus is not constrained by any mechanical means and is limited only by the shape of the light curtain. Velocity of the projectile or object is determined by dividing the known distance between two or more parallel light curtains by the time of passage of projectile or object between the light curtains. Additional velocity measurement is obtained from the known projectile length and the time of passage of the projectile through the light curtain and allows verification of the primary velocity measurement.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 24, 2013Publication date: November 27, 2014Inventor: Pavel Romashkin
