  • Patent number: 9003832
Abstract: A silica crucible is made in a mold cavity of the type in which ambient atmosphere can be drawn through silica grain in the cavity. In one embodiment, a silica grain layer is formed in the mold cavity and gas, which may comprise helium, nitrogen, hydrogen, or a mixture thereof, is introduced into the mold cavity. The silica grain layer is heated while substantially no ambient atmosphere is drawn through the silica grain. Thereafter, at least a portion of the silica grain layer is fused while drawing ambient atmosphere through the silica grain. The gas displaces air in the mold cavity thereby reducing nitrogen oxides and ozone.

  • Patent number: 9003868
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a sample introducing apparatus which is designed such that the analytical flow path runs from the needle to the separation column without the flow path switching means placed at the downstream side of the needle. This design reduces dead volume, which in turn reduces the diffusion of the sample injected into the analytical flow path. Moreover, the absence of the flow path switching means at the downstream side of the needle to inject a sample into the analytical flow path eliminates connection of the pipe with the flow path switching means. This prevents the sample from remaining in the connecting part, thereby reducing sample carry-over and improving the accuracy of analysis.

  • Patent number: 9003870
Abstract: To address this and/or other needs, the present inventor devised, among other things, a passive moisture detection probe that can be installed and left in place to continuously indicate whether the moisture-content in the wall-cavity of a building is below or above a desirable level. One exemplary moisture detection assembly includes a moisture-absorbent sensor element and an indicator. The sensor element, which can be placed in contact with the inner surface of a home's exterior sheathing, expands and contracts in response to the moisture content of the sheathing. The indicator, for example a rod, moves in responsive to the expansion and contraction of the sensor element, with its relative position corresponding to the moisture in the exterior sheathing and thus providing an on-going and observable sign of moisture intrusion.

  • Patent number: 9003871
Abstract: A hardness tester includes an image pickup control section, an indentation region extraction section, an indentation apex extraction section and a hardness calculation section. The image pickup control section obtains picked-up image data of a sample's surface. The region extraction section binarizes the image data, determines based on the binarized image data whether an indentation region candidate is extracted, and when determining that the candidate is not extracted, obtains curvature image data, binarizes the curvature image data, erodes and dilates the binarized curvature image data, performs distance transform on the eroded-and-dilated curvature image data, and extracts a closed region corresponding to the indenter's shape using the distance-transformed curvature image data. The apex extraction section extracts an indentation-measurement-use apex based on the closed region. The hardness calculation section calculates the sample's hardness based on the apex.
