Abstract: Aqueous binder compositions with reduced rates of salt precipitation are described. The compositions may include a carbohydrate and a sequestrant for sequestering one or more multivalent ions (e.g., Ca2+, Mg2+, Ba2+, Al3+, Fe2+, Fe3+, etc.). The sequestrant reduces a precipitation rate for the multivalent ions from the aqueous binder composition. Methods of reducing salt precipitation from a binder composition are also described. The methods may include the steps of providing an aqueous binder solution having one or more carbohydrates. They may also include adding a sequestrant for one or more multivalent ions to the aqueous binder solution. The sequestrant reduces a precipitation rate for the multivalent ions from the binder composition.

Abstract: Aqueous well treatment fluid compositions with biocidal activity are disclosed comprising a polymer for modifying fluid viscosity in the aqueous fluid, an organic monocarboxylic peracid being present in an anti-microbial amount of about 1 ppm to about 1000 ppm, and a controlled amount of hydrogen peroxide also being present. Peracetic acid is the preferred peracid. The viscosity-modifying polymer in the aqueous well treatment fluid composition may serve to reduce friction in the fluid or increase fluid viscosity. A method of using such compositions is also disclosed.

Abstract: Methods for providing polymer to a wellbore site include mixing a dry polymer with an aqueous medium at a location remote from the wellbore for a period of time sufficient for substantially complete hydration, transporting the hydrated polymer solution to the wellbore site, and injecting at least a portion of the hydrated polymer solution external to a chemical blending tub at the wellbore site to reduce shearing of the polymer. The hydrated polymer solution can be injected at the low or high pressure regions of the system manifold, before or after the high pressure pumps, before or after the blending tub, or any combination of injection points. Non-ionic polymer solutions can be used due to the fact that the solution is hydrated prior to transport, and no additional mixing or fluid at the wellbore site is necessary to hydrate the polymer.

Abstract: A method of improving the photoluminescence of silicon nanoparticles is provided along with a description of the silicon nanoparticle compositions prepared therefrom. The method generally comprises exposing a composition comprising silicon nanoparticles having a mean particle diameter not greater than 5 nm and a fluid to a non-ambient condition selected from (i) elevated temperature, (ii) elevated humidity, (iii) elevated pressure exerted by an oxygen-containing gas, (iv) a hydrogen plasma, (v) hydrogen gas, (vi) ultraviolet radiation, and (vii) and a combination of at least two of (i)-(vi). Optionally, the silicon nanoparticles may be prepared by a gas phase reaction. The exposure of the silicon nanoparticle compositions to the non-ambient condition results in improved photoluminescence. In particular, the exposed nanoparticles exhibit increased maximum emission intensity and luminescent quantum efficiency.
