Abstract: A microfluidic device for increasing convective clearance of particles from a fluid is provided. In some implementations, described herein the microfluidic device includes multiple layers that each define infusate, blood, and filtrate channels. Each of the channels have a pressure profile. The device can also include one or more pressure control features. The pressure control feature controls a difference between the pressure profiles along a length of the device. For example, the pressure control feature can control the difference between the pressure profile of the filtrate channel and the pressure profile of the blood channel. In some implementations, the pressure control feature controls the pressure difference between two channels such that the difference varies along the length of the channels by less than 50% of the pressure difference between the channels at the channels' inlets.

Abstract: Methods for the adjustment of a blood flow in a blood treatment machine/dialysis machine are disclosed. Steps for achieving a blood flow having an optimum value include determining a blood flow target value, altering the blood flow at a predetermined blood flow alteration rate, comparing a venous pressure with a venous pressure threshold, an arterial pressure with an arterial pressure threshold, and the blood flow with the blood flow target value, determining if a dialysis fluid parameter extreme is reached, storing an optimum blood flow value, in dependence on a blood flow (according to a value which is stored in a data table and which takes into account the blood flow target value as well as the measurement lag) in an optimum blood flow value memory, for which the dialysis fluid parameter threshold, the venous pressure threshold or the arterial pressure threshold, or the blood flow target value has been reached.

Abstract: A device, method, and system are provided for monitoring the delivery of fluids through a drip chamber. The device includes an electromagnetic radiation (EMR) source and an EMR detector. A device body is employed to position the source and detector about the drip chamber so that the source and detector define an optical path across the drip chamber. A processor device is employed to detect fluid drops from differences between detector signal values separated by a lag time. The flow rate is determined from a drip factor and the detection of multiple drops. In the context of delivering intravenous (IV) fluids, a battery powered handheld monitoring device that includes the source, detector, device body, and processor device may be affixed to a drip chamber included in an infusion set. The device includes a user interface, including buttons, a display, and an audio speaker, for the input and output of information.

Abstract: A healthcare enterprise has an associated management resource that manages operation of one or more medical devices in the healthcare enterprise. To determine what functionality to enable in a respective medical device, the respective medical device establishes a communication link to communicate in a network environment. Subsequent to establishing the communication link, the medical device initiates communications over the communication link from the medical device to the remotely located management resource. The communications include a unique identifier value assigned to the medical device. Depending upon feedback (such as granting or denial of authorization) from the management resource with respect to the unique identifier value, the medical device operates in one of multiple different operational modes such as a fully functional mode or a reduced functionality mode.

Abstract: A pressure indicator, including: a check valve; an upper cover; an intermediate member; an elastic pressure-sensing diaphragm; a transmission indication rod; and a lower cover. The check valve is disposed in the upper cover, and the inner wall of the upper cover and the check valve are assembled to form an upper opening. The opening of an air channel which communicates with the air is disposed inside the circular groove. The positioning bulge of the upper cover is connected to the positioning groove of the intermediate member. The lower port of the intermediate member is bonded with the circumferential flange of the elastic pressure-sensing diaphragm. The lower surface of the elastic pressure-sensing diaphragm is provided with a groove configured to coordinate with the support end of the transmission indication rod. The connection rod is connected to the top and bottom of the support end.

Abstract: A hand-held positive expiratory pressure device is presented. A float is insertable into an internal chamber of a housing and is urged towards a sealing surface by a biasing member to restrict or prevent airflow through the internal chamber. A user exhaling through the device urges the float away from the sealing surface to allow fluid to flow through the internal chamber. An adjustable stop positioned in the internal chamber selectively adjusts the amount of force exerted by the biasing member on the float.

Abstract: The present invention connects to tubing through which gas flows to a patient. An alert notifies monitoring personnel that oxygen flow to the patient has been interrupted, because the tubing has been disconnected. The invention comprises an adapter that is connected to a gas or oxygen source and a nipple over which the tubing fits and through which oxygen flows to the patient. When the tubing becomes disconnected from the nipple, the oxygen flow actuates an alert. In one embodiment, the invention includes a spring and swing arm that, when the tubing becomes disconnected from the nipple, align the nipple with a swing arm so that the gas flows through the nipple and the swing arm to actuate the alert.

Abstract: The mechanical ventilator system is a compact and portable artificial respiration system. A vortex ring generator delivers a FiO2 mix from an air-oxygen blender to a patient's alveoli via an endotracheal tube during the s patient's inhalations, but remains idle during the patient's exhalations. Exhaust gases generated by the patient are released through an exhaust gas valve. During operation, the patient's oxygen saturation level is measured and kept in communication to receive oxygen saturation level signals and to control the oxygen proportion of the FiO2 mix. A pressure flow sensor is fluidly coupled with the patient's airway to control actuation of the vortex generator. The flow sensor is coupled with a controller, which actuates a vortex generator trigger circuit in communication with the vortex ring generator.
