The process may be specifically adapted for particular welding wires, and may be particularly well suited for use with cored wires. Abstract: A tungsten submerged arc welding process wherein a non-consumable electrode (18) provides an arc (16) under a protective bed of flux powder (26), thereby eliminating the need for an inert cover gas supply. The arc melts a feed material in the form of alloy powder (22) or filler wire (40) along with a surface of a substrate (12) to form a layer of cladding material (10, 32) covered by a layer of slag (20, 44). The flux and slag function to shape the deposit, to control cooling, to scavenge contaminants and to shield the deposit from reaction with air, thereby facilitating the deposit of previously unweldable superalloy materials.

Abstract: This indirect spot welding is for welding members including at least two overlapping steel sheets that have a ferrite phase as a main phase by holding a welding electrode (23) against a steel sheet (21) from one side while applying pressure with the electrode (23), attaching a feeding point (24) to a steel sheet (22) at the other side at a location remote from the electrode (23), and allowing current to flow between the electrode (23) and the feeding point (24). This welding includes contacting magnetic rigid bodies (26-1, 26-2) to a peripheral area of the electrode (23) from the one side against which the electrode (23) is held and securing an overlapping region in the peripheral area of the electrode (23) by a magnetic force produced by the rigid bodies (26-1, 26-2), thereby obtaining a weld having fully satisfactory strength, regardless of the rigidity of the members.

Abstract: A method for detecting a subsurface defect in a workpiece undergoing processing includes directing focused heat energy from an energy point source on to the workpiece to generate a melt pool and cause a solid portion of the workpiece to emit incandescent radiation. The incandescent radiation emitted by the solid portion of the workpiece is captured and a signal based upon the color or intensity of the captured incandescent radiation is output. A processor receives the output signal and analyzes it for any variance. If any variance is detected, the region associated with the variance is determined. In this fashion, gradients in the color or intensity distribution reveal subsurface defects.

Abstract: A method and system are provided for crystallizing thin films with a laser system. The method includes obtaining a thin film comprising a substrate and a target layer that contains nano-scale particles and is deposited on the substrate. The heat conduction between the target layer and the substrate of the thin film is determined based on thermal input from the laser system to identify operating parameters for the laser system that cause crystallization of the nano-scale particles of the target layer in an environment at near room temperature with the substrate remaining at a temperature below the temperature of the target layer. The laser system is then operated with the determined operating parameters to generate a laser beam that is transmitted along an optical path to impinge the target layer. The laser beam is pulsed to create a localized rapid heating and cooling of the target layer.
