Abstract: A signal processing unit and a method for searching for peaks in a two-dimensional matrix of numbers are described. The matrix is analyzed row by row and then column by column. Analyzing a row comprises, for each element of the row, tagging the element in response to determining that the element is a local maximum of the row Analyzing a column comprises determining a bit field associated with the column by determining, for each element of the column, a corresponding bit field element Determining the bit field element comprises: if the element of the column has not been tagged, setting the bit field element to a predefined first value, and, if the element of the column has been tagged, determining whether the element is a local maximum and, in this case, setting the bit field element to a predefined second value different from the first value and, otherwise, setting the bit field element to the first value.

Abstract: An apparatus includes at least one processing device configured to determine an optimal pulse width for obtaining level measurements associated with material in a tank. The at least one processing device is also configured to generate a control signal that causes a transmitter of a guided wave radar (GWR) to transmit a signal having the optimal pulse width. The at least one processing device is further configured to send the control signal to the transmitter. The at least one processing device can also be configured to alter a length of the optimal pulse width in order to reduce false echoes detected by the GWR, reduce a size of an upper dead zone of the GWR, and/or detect a change of impedance to identify a fault of a process connector in the GWR.

Abstract: A determination unit that determines a positional change of a radar apparatus mounted on a vehicle including a vehicle body is provided with a reference member, a displacement sensor and displacement determining means. The reference member is fixed to the vehicle body and disposed such that at least a part of the reference member is adjacent to the radar apparatus. The displacement sensor detects a displacement of the radar apparatus with respect to the reference member. The determining means determines whether or not a position of the radar apparatus has changed with respect to the vehicle body, based on the displacement detected by the displacement sensor.

Abstract: A beam steering capability is proposed for a ladar sensor operating with limited laser transmit power, as may be typical of an airborne or automotive application. The ladar system also makes use of optical gain elements in the receiver which act to increase the signal to noise ratio at the receiver when the laser transmit power available is restricted by power, size, and/or cost limitations. In one embodiment, the calibration of each pixel in the ladar sensor is provided for by an electrical amplifier array with a number of pixel amplifiers. Each pixel amplifier may be individually calibrated to a mating detector element so as to eliminate the variations in dark current and gain between all pixels in the detector array. A number of new detector array designs are described which may lower cost and improve performance, and new low cost and high performance packaging for the detector array, amplifier array, and readout integrated circuit is introduced.

Abstract: A frequency modulated (coherent) laser detection and ranging system includes a read-out integrated circuit formed with a two-dimensional array of detector elements each including a photosensitive region receiving both return light reflected from a target and light from a local oscillator, and local processing circuitry sampling the output of the photosensitive region four times during each sample period clock cycle to obtain quadrature components. A data bus coupled to one or more outputs of each of the detector elements receives the quadrature components from each of the detector elements for each sample period and serializes the received quadrature components. A processor coupled to the data bus receives the serialized quadrature components and determines an amplitude and a phase for at least one interfering frequency corresponding to interference between the return light and the local oscillator light using the quadrature components.

Abstract: Systems and methods that combine forward-model image reconstruction techniques with tomographic estimation of three-dimensional atmospheric turbulence to enable high-quality anisoplanatic imaging and beam control through the atmosphere over an extended field of view using a phased laser array. The system projects laser energy onto specific locations of extended objects in various geometries, overcomes atmospheric anisoplanatism and backscatter; estimates phase across the full aperture, and reconstructs the target object in great detail to enable high-resolution aimpoint selection and maintenance. Aimpoint maintenance is performed by sequentially analyzing a passive image and a laser spot in rapid succession, in each subaperture at high signal-to-noise ratio. As a further improvement, backscatter issues from the projected laser beam are eliminated by cycling the laser and/or sequentially lasing on different wavelengths within the laser gain bandwidth.
