Abstract: An articulating mechanism for remote manipulation of a surgical or diagnostic tool comprises an elongate shaft having a longitudinal axis and a plurality of axially aligned links located at the distal end of the shaft. The articulating mechanism also includes an actuating element connected to and configured to cause movement of the axially aligned links and a locking mechanism located proximal of the axially aligned links. The locking mechanism including a collar mechanism through which the actuating element extends and a locking member movable between first and second positions. The collar mechanism frictionally impedes motion of the actuating element when the locking member is in the first position and the collar mechanism allows translation of the actuating element when the locking member is in the second position.

  • Patent number: 9517327
Abstract: The present invention provides a catheter clamp assembly having a base and a slide cover. The base has a top, bottom and a body including a slide cover track. The body has internal walls defining a catheter opening extending from the bottom to the top. A catheter channel extends from the catheter opening to a sidewall opening. The slide cover includes a lower surface incorporating a prong to engage a wall defining the catheter opening and to secure a catheter in the catheter channel. The slide cover has a first location providing access to the catheter opening and a second location that clamps a catheter in the catheter channel. Moving the slide cover from its first location contacts a length of catheter extending through the catheter opening to position it in the catheter channel for securement when the slide cover reaches its second location.

  • Patent number: 9517342
Abstract: The system includes five components: (1) a sensor array, (2) a processor, (3) a transmitter, (4) a receiver-stimulator, and (5) an implantable electrode array. The olfactory implant system generates odor fingerprints by detecting odors with an array of chemical sensors and then transmitting variable spatio-temporal stimulation patterns for an electrode array with electrode stimulating points positioned at different locations in the olfactory cortex (e.g., stimulating the olfactory bulb). Different patterns of activity in the olfactory cortex are thereby generated which mimic the sense of smell in a subject. Once trained the system should be usable by a subject to detect or correctly identify one or more odors.

  • Patent number: 9517345
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a method for determining stimulation parameters for a neuroprosthetic device performed by a processor of the device. Based on (i) a desired spatial pattern of neural activity, the processor determines stimulation parameters for an array of electrodes of the neuroprosthetic device. The processor determines the stimulation parameters such that a difference between (i) the desired spatial pattern of neural activity and (ii) an estimated spatial pattern of neural activity is optimised. The estimated spatial pattern of neural activity is an estimate of a response of a target neural tissue to being stimulated by the neuroprosthetic device based on the stimulation parameters. This method allows higher resolution stimulation and allows electrode arrays with higher electrode density to be usefully employed.

  • Patent number: 9517363
Abstract: A handheld forcible entry device includes a tubular housing. An input drive shaft is rotationally assembled to the housing, wherein the input shaft rotates about an axis perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the housing. A helical pressure applicating lead screw is rotationally assembled to the housing, wherein the lead screw rotates about an axis parallel to the housing longitudinal axis. The input shaft and lead screw are rotationally synchronized by a bevel gear set. A pressure applicator is threadably engaged with a helical threaded segment integrated in the lead screw. Rotation of the threading advances or retracts the pressure applicator from a stationary wedge plate. The separation of the pressure applicator and the stationary wedge plate separates a locked member from the associated frame, thus forcibly opening the locked member. The input shaft can be operated using a manually applied rotation or power applied rotation.

Abstract: Speech enhancement apparatus and respirator masks including speech enhancement apparatus, as well as methods of enhancing speech transmission for the wearer of a respirator mask are described herein. In one or more embodiments, the speech enhancement apparatus and methods described herein detect acoustic energy within a first frequency range in the clean air envelope of a respirator mask and deliver compensating acoustic energy outside of the clean air envelope using a speaker. The compensating acoustic energy is, in one or more embodiments, delivered in one or more predetermined attenuated frequency ranges that cover less than all of the detected first frequency range. In one or more embodiments, the compensating acoustic energy may be delivered with an attenuated amplitude profile that uniform or that is non-uniform over the one or more attenuated frequency ranges.

Abstract: Methods and/or apparatuses having a conduit with at least one length of conductive metal wire therein along with a length of non-conductive wire therein. The length of non-conductive wire includes a heat-expandable firestop insulator material. Upon reaching a pre-defined temperature corresponding to that of a fire, the non-conductive wire expands to fill a length of the conduit. Alternatively, the firestop insulator material may be disposed in the void within the conduit that exists outside of the conductors. The expansion of the material prevents the spread of fire along the length of the conduit.

Abstract: An automatic stovetop fire suppressor providing a gradual release of a fire suppressing agent in a desired distribution pattern and method of gradual and spatial agent release are provided herein. A plastic cone shaped lid seals on the bottom of a can and forms a closed container. The closed container is filled with a fire suppressing agent. An initiator charge breaks a designed breaking point of a reduced horizontal cross sectional area when fuse activated. The bottom lid drops down exposing a radial opening. Fire suppressing agent flows out of the radial opening, suppressing a stovetop fire with minimal or no splashing of cooking oil. An initiator housing is affixed to a top wall of the can and serves as the welding point for securing the plastic lid. A travel limiting member attached to the bottom lid catches on a shoulder of the initiator housing to limit the radial opening height.
