This device uses an overtube with an inflatable positioning ring that can be inflated after placement of the overtube just proximal to the tip of the endoscope or echoendoscope. A catheter with an occlusion balloon at its free endportion is carried by the overtube and extends beyond the tip of the endoscope, distal to the part of the body cavity that needs to be examined. Inflation of this balloon together with positioning ring creates a closed space within the body cavity that can be filled with air or water for improving the quality of the examination with regular endoscope of echoendoscope, respectively, while reducing the examination complications.

Abstract: Systems and methods for analyzing the anatomy of a patient's eye with circular or rotated polarized laser beams, or with laser beams of different wavelengths are disclosed. One system includes a polarization beam-splitter and a quarter-wave plate, wherein the quarter-wave plate is configured to circularly rotate a laser beam received from a laser that is transmitted and passes through the polarization beam-splitter, and to transform a circularly rotated back-reflected beam to a linearly polarized laser beam that is perpendicular to the beam that was transmitted through the polarization beam-splitter. Substantially all of the back-reflected beam is directed to a photo-detector for analysis. A Faraday rotator subsystem may be substituted for a polarization beam-splitter. An optical system including a laser that generates a laser beam of a first wavelength for therapeutic treatment, and another laser that generates a laser beam of a second wavelength for measurement is also disclosed.

Abstract: A position of a light absorber existing in a subject and an initial sound pressure of an acoustic wave generated at the light absorber are calculated from an electric signal converted from the received acoustic wave generated in response to irradiation of the subject with light. An optical absorption coefficient and an optical scattering coefficient of the subject are calculated using the position of the light absorber and the initial sound pressure of the acoustic wave generated at the position of the light absorber. A light quantity distribution in the subject is calculated using the optical absorption coefficient and the optical scattering coefficient of the subject. An optical absorption coefficient distribution in the subject is calculated using the light quantity distribution in the subject and an initial sound pressure distribution in the subject obtained from the electric signal.

Abstract: What is disclosed is a video system and method that accounts for differences in imaging characteristics of differing video systems used to acquire video of respective regions of interest of a subject being monitored for a desired physiological function. In one embodiment, video is captured using N video imaging devices, where N?2, of respective regions of interest of a subject being monitored for a desired physiological function (i.e., a respiratory or cardiac function). Each video imaging device is different but has complimentary imaging characteristics. A reliability factor f is determined for each of the devices in a manner more fully disclosed herein. A time-series signal is generated from each of the videos. Each time-series signal is weighted by each respective reliability factor and combined to obtain a composite signal. A physiological signal can be then extracted from the composite signal. The processed physiological signal corresponds to the desired physiological function.
