Abstract: An artificial sensory epithelium (1) to be embedded in a cochlea (301) of a patient includes a piezoelectric film (2) and multitude microelectrodes (3), (3), . . . arranged on the cochlea. The piezoelectric film is arranged along a basilar membrane (306) in the cochlea. A portion of the piezoelectric film that corresponds to a portion of the basilar membrane that is induced to vibrate by sound waves coming from outside the cochlea vibrates. A microelectrode of the microelectrodes that is arranged on the portion of the piezoelectric film provides electric stimuli to spiral ganglion neurons (311). The artificial sensory epithelium preferably includes a support member (4) configured to support the piezoelectric film and be fixable in the cochlea.

  • Patent number: 9566430
Abstract: The present invention relates to a topical or cosmetic system that includes a first element capable of acting as an electron donor and a second element capable of acting as an electron acceptor. Such first and second elements are spaced apart by a predetermined distance across a skin surface. The system also includes a third element extending over the predetermined distance across the skin surface, while the third element contains an electrically conductive medium for electrically connecting the first and second elements, thereby generating an electrical current that flows across the skin surface from the first element through the conductive medium to the second element in the absence of any power source. The present invention also relates to methods of using the above-described system for preventing or treating skin damage.

  • Patent number: 9566433
Abstract: A medical stimulation device such as a cochlear implant configured to provide stimulation of one or more spatially-restricted contiguous portion(s) of the spiral array of auditory nerve fibers in the cochlear (“discrete stimulation regions”). Each discrete stimulation region is defined by the constructive and/or destructive interference of stimulating and limiting signals simultaneously applied to electrode channels of an implanted electrode array, the stimulating and limiting signals being determined based upon transimpedance measurements of intracochlear electrode channels of the implanted electrode array representing specific spread functions of an individual recipient. The stimulating signal is preferably applied through a targeted electrode channel; that is, one or more successive electrodes which is/are adjacent to the discrete stimulation region.

  • Patent number: 9566434
Abstract: A method of activating at least two electrodes in a multichannel electrode array using channel specific sampling sequences is presented. A channel specific sampling sequence is defined for each electrode, the sequence having a particular duration, pulse amplitude distribution, and number of pulses. A weighting factor is applied to the channel specific sampling sequence. Each electrode in the multichannel electrode array is then simultaneously activated using sign-correlated pulses, the sign-correlated pulses based on parameters of spatial channel interaction reflecting geometric overlapping of electrical fields from each electrode, non-linear compression, and each electrode's weighted channel specific sampling sequence.

  • Patent number: 9566435
Abstract: A method is described for adjusting hearing implant operating parameters for electrode contacts in an implantable electrode array to minimize tinnitus in an implanted patient. A channel tinnitus masking stimulation level is measured for each electrode contact at which maximum tinnitus masking occurs, Ytin,n. A channel threshold stimulation level also is measured for each electrode contact that represents a lowest detectable stimulation level, Tmeas,n. And a channel maximum stimulation level is measured for each electrode contact that represents a maximum comfortable stimulation level, MCLmeas,n. Channel threshold stimulation level Tn and channel maximum stimulation level MCLn are then adjusted for each electrode contact as a function of the channel tinnitus masking stimulation level Ytin,n and tinnitus masking stimulation levels for adjacent electrode contacts, Ytin, adj.

  • Patent number: 9566437
Abstract: A method for heart treatment includes analyzing the cardiac rhythm. The method further includes utilizing a generator to produce discharges (Si) of N pulses (I) of VNS stimulation in succession. The discharge may be synchronized to a detected R ventricular depolarization wave of each cardiac cycle. The method further includes controlling a stochastic modulation of the discharges control of the delivery of each VNS pulse of each discharge by selective inhibition or not of the generation of these VNS pulses. The number of pulses of each discharge thus randomly varies, and thus varies the VNS stimulation energy of this discharge, which is artificially induced, cycle-to-cycle variability in the RR interval. This stochastic therapy is applied if the spontaneous heart rate variability falls below a minimum level.

  • Patent number: 9566438
Abstract: This device comprises a generator producing bursts (Si) of N pulses (I) of VNS stimulation generated in succession during respective periods of activity (TON) separated by intermediate periods of inactivity (TOFF) during which no stimulation is issued. Stochastic modulation circuitry controls the delivery of the bursts of each of the N pulses of each VNS burst by selective inhibition or not, of the generation of each of the VNS pulses depending on the result of a respective randomization. The number of VNS pulses of each burst is thus randomly varying, and thus the VNS stimulation energy of this burst and the interval between successive pulses, which counteract the appearance of a physiological compensation loop.
