Patent number: 9576166Abstract: Improved methods, non-transient computer readable media, and apparatus are described for automatically quantifying space within a container using a scanning sensor node disposed within the container and exposed to scan the space from above the space. For example, a general method involves detecting an initiating condition from within the container using an activation sensor on the scanning sensor node. The initiating condition reflects at least an anticipated change within the container (such as an opening of the container, movement, ceased movement, loading/unloading operation, or closing of the container). In response to the activation sensor driven detection of the initiating condition, the scanning sensor node captures a snapshot scan of the space within the container from above the space and within the container and stores the snapshot scan within a memory of the scanning sensor node.Type: GrantFiled: January 11, 2016Date of Patent: February 21, 2017Assignee: FEDEX CORPORATE SERVICES, INC.Inventors: Reuben F. Patent number: 9576206Abstract: A method of localizing a vehicle hosting a sensor comprises capturing data from the sensor providing a sensed scene around the vehicle at a current time, processing the sensed scene to extract a set of features from the sensed scene and determine a position of the vehicle from the sensed scene in relation to a previous position of the sensor, comparing the extracted set of features to one or more stored experiences, wherein each stored experience comprises a plurality of sets of features, where each set of features has been determined from a previously sensed scene, to ascertain whether the sensed scene can be recognized within any of the stored experiences, and if the extracted set of features of the sensed scene are recognized then that stored experience is used to produce an estimate of the position of the vehicle at the current time with respect to the stored experience.Type: GrantFiled: February 8, 2013Date of Patent: February 21, 2017Assignee: Oxford University Innovation LimitedInventors: Winston Churchill, Paul Michael Newman

Patent number: 9576207Abstract: The method consists in taking, when the vehicle is running, images of the road markings delimiting the circulation lanes of the road, and in fully estimating, through an iterative process, the orientation of the camera with respect to the vehicle, based on the position of two lanes located side-by-side on the image. The calibration essentially comprises: correcting the position of the lane edges in the image (10, 12); estimating the residual pitch and yaw (16); updating the rotation matrix (18); estimating the residual roll (20); updating the rotation matrix (24). These steps are iterated until the corrective angles estimated by each module are negligible (22).Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 2014Date of Patent: February 21, 2017Assignee: PARROT AUTOMOTIVEInventor: Laure Chevalley

Patent number: 9576208Abstract: A display system for a vehicle comprises a display mounted within a passenger compartment of a vehicle and at least one camera mounted to the vehicle and facing at least partially in a rear direction. The display shows the images recorded by the camera(s) to provide a rear view for the driver of the vehicle. An ECU is controllably connected to the display screen and the at least one camera to analyze an image from the at least one camera to detect when an object in the image is an emergency vehicle; and to activate an alert on the display when an emergency vehicle is detected.Type: GrantFiled: December 2, 2014Date of Patent: February 21, 2017Assignee: Continental Automotive Systems, Inc.Inventors: David Agnew, Stefan Lüke, Marc Fischer, Dieter Krökel

Patent number: 9576209Abstract: A system, method, and device may include software and hardware which simplify and quicken configuration of the system for testing a device, enhance testing procedures which may be performed, and provide data via which to easily discern a cause and nature of an error which may result during testing. A camera may capture still images of a display screen of a tested device and another camera may capture video images of the tested device and a partner device. A wizard may be used to generate a configuration file based on one previously generated for a similar device. A mount for a tested device may be structured so that: it is suitable for mounting thereon a plurality of differently structured devices; and adjustments in a vertical direction and a horizontal direction in a plane and adjustments of an angle of the device relative to the plane may be easily made.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 2015Date of Patent: February 21, 2017Assignee: T-Mobile USA, Inc.Inventors: David Jenkinson, Bobby Lee, Gavin Liaw

Patent number: 9576210Abstract: A system to select video frames for optical character recognition (OCR) based on feature metrics associated with blur and sharpness. A device captures a video frame including text characters. An edge detection filter is applied to the frame to determine gradient features in perpendicular directions. An “edge map” is created from the gradient features, and points along edges in the edge map are identified. Edge transition widths are determined at each of the edge points based in local intensity minimum and maximum on opposite sides of the respective edge point in the frame. Sharper edges have smaller edge transition widths than blurry images. Statistics are determined from the edge transition widths, and the statistics are processed by a trained classifier to determine if the frame is or is not sufficiently sharp for text processing.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 2014Date of Patent: February 21, 2017Assignee: AMAZON TECHNOLOGIES, INC.Inventors: Yue Liu, Qingfeng Yu, Xing Liu, Pradeep Natarajan

Patent number: 9576211Abstract: The recognition rate is improved and recognition errors are suppressed when recognizing magnetic ink characters. When the magnetic ink character 101 one character before the target character to which a magnetic recognition process is applied is not recognized, the character recognition unit 80 of a check reader 1 detects a different peak in a specific range before and after the position of the peak detected as the first peak of the one preceding magnetic ink character 101 in the signal waveform data, extracts character waveform data for the one preceding magnetic ink character 101 from the signal waveform data based on the position of the detected different peak, and applies the magnetic recognition process to the extracted character waveform data.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 2013Date of Patent: February 21, 2017Assignee: SEIKO EPSON CORPORATIONInventor: Yoshiaki Kinoshita
