Abstract: Methods, apparatus and systems for measuring pressure and/or for quantitative or qualitative measurement of analytes within the eye or elsewhere in the body. Optical pressure sensors and/or optical analyte sensors are implanted in the body and light is cast from an extracorporeal light source, though the cornea, conjunctiva or dermis, and onto a reflective element located within each pressure sensor or analyte sensor. The position or configuration of each sensor's reflective element varies with pressure or analyte concentration. Thus, the reflectance spectra of light reflected by the sensors' reflective elements will vary with changes in pressure or changes in analyte concentration. A spectrometer or other suitable instrument is used to process and analyze the reflectance spectra of the reflected light, thereby obtaining an indication of pressure or analyte concentration adjacent to the sensor(s).

Abstract: A system for tracking the position of one or more medical devices for insertion into the body of a patient is disclosed. The system may also be used to locate one or medical devices at a later time after placement thereof. The present system employs multiple radiating elements that can be simultaneously detected by a sensor unit of the system, wherein at least one of the radiating elements is included with the medical device. Another of the radiating elements may be placed at a predetermined point on the skin of the patient to serve as a landmark to help determine the location of the medical device with respect to the landmark. Detection of the radiating elements by the sensor unit enables the relative positions of the radiating elements to be ascertained and depicted on a display, to assist a clinician in accurately positioning the medical device, such as a catheter.

Abstract: An ingestible bolus for automatically monitoring location and physiological parameters including core temperature of ruminant animals. The location parameters are determined using magnetic field information and/or GPS data sensed by the sensors in the bolus and communicated along with a unique ID number and time stamp to a centralized location. A data center at the centralized location comprises a computing environment for analyzing the data received from the bolus and transfer the analyzed results including animal temperature, location to a user interface display. The temperature information is analyzed at the data center to determine the health status of the animal.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are systems comprising sensor devices that may be affixed to a patient and used to perform clinical measurements such as measurements for calculating a BASMI score. A first sensor device is configured to be successively attached to each of a wrist carrier, an ankle carrier, and a headset carrier. The carriers are attached to, or positioned next to, the relevant portion of the patient's body in order to perform particular measurements relating to generating a BASMI score. As the patient performs the routine of motions associated with a particular BASMI measurement, the sensor device records the measurements and communicates the measurements to a user computing device. A second sensor device is configured to be applied to the patient's torso and an additional measurement of patient flexibility taken and communicated to the user computing device. The user computing device generates a BASMI score from the recorded measurements.

Abstract: Implementations described herein include surgical distraction devices having a distal movement assembly having a pusher plate comprising a first slot extending along a first axis disposed in a first side and a second slot extending along a second axis disposed in a second side thereof. The first axis is oriented at an angle of from about 60 to about 160 degrees from the second axis. The device further includes a first and second paddles, each paddle having a corresponding engagement mechanism for movably coupling the respective first or second paddle to the pusher plate when engaged in the respective slot. Rotational actuation of the proximal drive assembly causes proximal or distal movement of the pusher plate, causing the first and second engagement members to move relative to their respective slots, thereby moving the first paddle and the second paddle in opposing directions. Methods of using such surgical distraction devices to determine size of an intervertebral space are also described.

Abstract: A method and a device determine a time curve of the depth of breath of a sleeping person. Height profiles of the person at individual recording time points are continuously determined. Height profiles from adjacent recording time points are combined to give segments. The region which indicates the abdomen or chest region of the person depending on a corresponding reference point or reference region is selected as an observation region. For each height profile within the segment, the corresponding average value of the distances of the points of the height profile, which points lie within the observation region, from a reference point is determined. For the segment, a signal is determined and for each recording time point, the average value determined for this height profile is associated with the signal. On the basis of the determined signal, values which characterize the time curve of the depth of breath are determined.
