Abstract: This application provides a novel mouse model (PLA2g6 KOEx2) in which genetic deletion of the N terminus of PLA2g6 results in a loss of dopaminergic (DA) neurons in substantia nigra (SN), and development of PD-like motor deficits that can be significantly improved by L-DOPA. Based in part on experimental results demonstrated with this model, this disclosure provides genetically modified animals and genetically modified animal cells that comprise a mutant allele of PLA2g6 and in which store-operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE) is impaired and ER Ca2+ stores are depleted. This disclosure also provides methods of screening a compound for an effect on the SOCE pathway and/or ER Ca2+ by administering the compound to such a genetically modified animal or genetically modified animal cell.

Abstract: A disk-like fishing float comprises flotation means and attachment means on a bottom section of the float for attachment of a fishing trap line, wherein the bottom section comprises a planing surface for planing of the fishing float on a surface of a water current when the float is held in a water current by the fishing trap line. The float, when attached upstream of a marker buoy attached to the fishing trap line, prevents submerging of the buoy which makes it easier and faster to locate the marker buoy and to haul and set traps. It also reduces the amount of line needed down to the traps thereby reducing costs and the chances of entanglement with trap lines of other fishermen and of harming sea life, and reduces trap rollovers thereby increasing the catch.

Abstract: The invention provides a gas infused milk product, wherein the gas infused milk product comprises a lactose hydrolyzed concentrated milk infused with a soluble gas. The invention also provides methods of making such a product. Such methods include providing milk (skim milk, 1% milk, 2% milk, whole milk, half and half, cream or other milk product) and concentrating and hydrolyzing the milk with lactase to from a lactose hydrolyzed milk concentrate. The milk can be concentrated in vacuo (in a vacuum) in order to remove the dissolved gasses from the lactose hydrolyzed milk concentrate. Soluble gasses, such as nitrous oxide or carbon dioxide are then introduced into the lactose hydrolyzed milk concentrate to form a gas infused milk concentrate. In one aspect of this invention, the gas infused milk concentrate is then introduced into a stream of carbonated or still water resulting in a gas infused milk beverage.

Abstract: A method for the intermediate processing of coffee beans, utilizing natural thermal mineral spring water, where in the beans have reached a parchment stage of production. The coffee beans with the mucilage layer are delivered to a resting facility concurrently to the combining of the thermal spring water therewith. The thermal spring water having an at least minimal predetermined temperature is added to the resting facility in sufficient quantities to maintain the coffee beans with the mucilage layer in a submerged state for a predetermined time, resulting in a removal of the mucilage layer from the coffee beans. The thermal spring water is subsequently drained from the resting facility and the coffee beans, upon conclusion of the predetermined time for resting. After removing the drained coffee beans from the resting facility the coffee beans are delivered to additional processing facilities.

Abstract: A coffee brewing system and method brew hot coffee at an elevated temperature by mixing coffee grounds with hot water, filtering the hot coffee to remove at least some of the coffee grounds from the hot coffee to form filtered hot coffee, and rapidly cooling the filtered hot coffee to reduce a temperature of the filtered hot coffee to form cooled coffee. The coffee optionally may be mixed with a gas, such as nitrogen, prior to serving the cooled coffee. The system and method can rapidly produce cold coffee in large amounts without diluting the coffee in water or ice, or waiting for the coffee to cool in a refrigerated environment.

Abstract: A novel method of reducing the melting point of a peptide-based biopolymer using a nitrogen-containing compound as a plasticizer is provided. The peptide-based biopolymer can be keratin or silk. The nitrogen-containing compound can be one or more amino acids or other nitrogen-containing compounds (except urea), all of which have a melting temperature above approximately 133° C., the decomposition temperature of urea. Pellets made using this novel process can be used as animal feed and soil amendments (fertilizer) to increase the adsorption of amino acids in the animal or in the soil, respectively.
