Publication number: 20180055598Abstract: A system and method for mitigating pain associated with dentistry provides a removal apparatus for removing a portion of a tooth. A desiccation apparatus flows a desiccated gas to the portion of the tooth to desiccate dentinal tubules in a region surrounding the portion of the tooth, generally preventing nerve cells within the tooth from transmitting pain signals associated with the removal. The removal apparatus has a drill head with a body having an axial opening configured to accept a dental burr. An annular passage exists between the dental burr and the body within the axial opening. A chamber in the body is in fluid communication with the axial opening, where a channel is fluidly coupled to an external port and to a source of the desiccated gas to flow the desiccated gas therethrough and expose a drilling region of the dental burr to the desiccated gas to mitigate pain.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 28, 2017Publication date: March 1, 2018Inventor: James B. Publication number: 20180055600Abstract: Orthodontic systems and related methods are disclosed for designing and providing improved or more effective tooth moving systems for eliciting a desired tooth movement and/or repositioning teeth into a desired arrangement. Methods and orthodontic systems include the generation of an overcorrection in the tooth-receiving cavities of an appliance worn in the dentition. The overcorrection may provide an improved and more accurately applied force or moment applied to a tooth. The overcorrected force or moment can move a tooth closer to a desired position than if not overcorrected as sufficient force can still applied to the tooth as it gets closer to the desired position. The overcorrected force or moment may also better target the root of the tooth where the biological response to tooth movement occurs. The overcorrection may be calculated in various ways as described herein.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 23, 2017Publication date: March 1, 2018Inventors: Vadim Matov, Fuming Wu, Jihua Cheng, Jennifer Chen, Chunhua Li, Bastien Pesenti, Igor Kvasov

Publication number: 20180055638Abstract: Mitral valve prolapse and mitral regurgitation can be treating by implanting in the mitral annulus a transvalvular intraannular band. The band is positioned so that it extends transversely across a coaptive edge formed by the closure of the mitral valve leaflets, to inhibit prolapse into the left atrium. At least one marginal chordae is severed, to permit leaflet closure against the band.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 7, 2017Publication date: March 1, 2018Inventors: Valavanur A. Subramanian, Thomas Afzal, Gary Hulme, Jeffrey Christian, Michael L. Reo

Publication number: 20180055641Abstract: A method of forming an implant having a porous tissue ingrowth structure and a bearing support structure. The method includes depositing a first layer of a metal powder onto a substrate, scanning a laser beam over the powder so as to sinter the metal powder at predetermined locations, depositing at least one layer of the metal powder onto the first layer and repeating the scanning of the laser beam.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 19, 2017Publication date: March 1, 2018Inventors: Eric Jones, Christopher J. Publication number: 20180055642Abstract: A medical implant includes a body and a porous structure attached to the body. A boss integral with the body extends outwardly from a surface of the body. The porous structure has a surface that cooperates with the boss of the body to prevent pullout of the body from the porous structure. In fabricating the medical implant, the body and the porous structure are formed separately and subsequently secured together.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 22, 2017Publication date: March 1, 2018Inventor: Keenan Michael Hanson

Publication number: 20180055643Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a three-dimensionally (3D) printed tissue engineering scaffold for tissue regeneration and a method for manufacturing the 3D printed tissue engineering scaffold. The 3D printed tissue engineering scaffold may be fabricated at least in part from a composite material having an insoluble component and soluble component. The three-dimensional tissue scaffolds of the disclosure may be fabricated via a rapid prototyping machine. In some instances, the three-dimensional shape of the fabricated tissue engineering scaffold may correspond to a three-dimensional shape of a tissue defect of a patient.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 7, 2017Publication date: March 1, 2018Inventors: Nathan Jonathan Castro, Benjamin Blair Holmes

Publication number: 20180055645Abstract: Systems and methods for joint preparation and fusion are disclosed. The system includes a cutting device having a handle, and rigid blade member. The blade member may include cutting edges on first and second sides, and may be curved in one or more planes. The blade member may be deployed to project outside of an outer tube, and the cutting device may be rotated to create a circular cavity. In a method of use, a cannula provides access to a procedure site such as a joint. A pathway to the joint is created, and the cutting device is inserted and deployed to undercut a cavity in the joint. A fusion device may be implanted across the joint to provide compression and fuse the joint. The system may also include instrumentation for creating access to a joint, bone graft insertion and implant insertion.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 3, 2017Publication date: March 1, 2018Inventors: Björn N.
