  • Patent number: 10024121
Abstract: Flexible riser hang-off for rigid risers deployed offshore is provided and called a spoolflex hang-off. The spoolflex hang-off utilizes combined torsional and bending flexibilities of a rigid tubular jumper deployed between a top of the riser and a floater piping. The rigid jumper transports fluids, contains the fluid pressure and accommodates angular deflections of the riser. The riser top is suspended from a pivoting arrangement that transfers the riser tension to the floater structure. The rigid jumper can be made of titanium or of other metallic or nonmetallic materials. The flexible riser hang-off provided has rotational stiffness independent on riser tension. Low static and fatigue bending loads on the riser and on the floater structure result. The hang-off allows large riser deflection angles.

  • Patent number: 10024123
Abstract: When one of at least two independently driven gripper chains (102) of a coiled tubing injector (100) begins to turn faster than another one of the injector's other independently drive gripper chains by an amount that indicates slipping of one of the independently driven gripper chains relative to tubing (109) being held between the driven gripper chains, a hydraulic timing circuit (318), which is coupled with the driven chains through hydraulic timing motors (214, 216), generates a pressure signal that causes the injector's hydraulic traction system to increase the hydraulic pressure applied by hydraulic cylinders (220) to generate a normal force applied by grippers on the chains to the tubing.

  • Patent number: 10024129
Abstract: The pipe wiper assembly of the present invention assists with wiping the pipe as the pipe is removed from the hole (“tripped out”). The pipe passes through the two pipe apertures of the pipe wiper assembly during the removal. Two upper containment arms adjust between an open position and a closed position within the housing to form the upper pipe aperture. The lower containment lip forms the lower piper aperture. The upper containment arms and lower containment lip partially enclose the housing to prevent the wiper from exiting the wiper storage. The containment arms slideably adjust to eliminate the need for hinges. The removal of the hinges provides for easier storage and transportation of the pipe wiper assembly. The removal of hinges also reduces manufacturing costs of the pipe wiper assembly.

  • Patent number: 10024133
Abstract: A straddle apparatus deploys in a borehole with tubing to treat different formation zones. The apparatus has packer elements and a flow element. The packer elements have fill ports in fluid communication with the tubing and have packer valves. These packer valves are biased to open fluid communication between the elements and the fill port so the elements can be inflated to seal off a borehole section. The flow unit has a flow port in fluid communication with the tubing and has a flow valve biased to close fluid communication between the flow port and the borehole. Once the elements inflate, a control unit electronically activate the packer valves to close fluid communication between the elements and the fill ports. Then, the control units electronically activates the flow valve to open fluid communication between the flow port and the borehole so treatment can be applied to the formation zone.

  • Patent number: 10024138
Abstract: A pressure responsive downhole tool includes a bi-directional collet utilized in conjunction with a pressure retaining chamber to control a ball valve utilizing a change in wellbore annulus pressure. Without substantially altering the pressure change between various operative functions, the tool can utilize the rate of pressure increase/decrease to drive the tool to different configurations. Initially, a pressure increase is utilized to engage the operation mechanism of a ball valve. Subsequently, the pressure increase can be utilized to open and close the ball valve. By varying the rate of the pressure increase and/or decrease, the position of the ball valve when the annulus pressure is bled off can be controlled, thereby permitting the ball valve to either closed when annulus pressure is decreased or remain locked-open when the annulus pressure is decreased.

  • Patent number: 10024145
Abstract: A method of creating and finishing perforations in a hydrocarbon well, starting by shooting a high velocity jet of metal particles into the well wall, thereby creating a perforation in the well wall. After this, a gas blast is pushed into the perforation, for a blast time duration, the gas blast creating an increasing pressure at the perforation, until a maximum is reached, the pressure of the gas then undergoing a period of rapid decline to a level of less than 50% of the maximum pressure. The period of rapid decline takes less than one-sixth of the blast time duration. Accordingly, the time pattern of speed and pressure of the gas blast results in a higher maximum pressure at the perforation, resulting in localized fracturing, emanating from the perforation, which permits a greater flow of hydrocarbons into the perforation and from the perforation into the well.

  • Patent number: 10024163
Abstract: Methods for material build-up on a tip of a blade of a gas turbine engine are provided. The method can include inserting a material supply and an inflatable bladder between the tip and a shroud such that the material supply is exposed to the tip and the inflatable bladder is positioned between the material supply and a shroud, inflating the inflatable bladder to force contact between the material supply and the tip, and causing relative movement between the material supply and the tip. The relative movement, in combination with the radial biased contact between the material supply and the tip, creates heat through friction. As such, the relative movement can frictionally weld new material from the material supply onto the tip of the blade. For example, the heat created can be sufficient to melt the surface of the material supply to transfer material from the material supply to the tip.
