  • Patent number: 10180134
Abstract: Methods and systems for controlling the timing of a fluid driven positive displacement pump (FDPDP) are disclosed using pump inlet pressure, flow rate and time domain control. Pressure is thus controlled at various flow rates of fluids to be pumped in subsea environments. The FDPDP includes a plurality of pressure vessels connected by piping, each vessel having two chambers. One chamber is connected to a source of fluid to be pumped and the other chamber is connected to a source of driving fluid. The methods synchronize pumping chambers that have no mechanical means to control timing between each pumping chamber. The control methods described utilize algorithms which receive feedback from the pumping system to control the pumping sequence and adapt to any parameter changes to maintain a constant range of desired pressure.

  • Patent number: 10180135
Abstract: An injection molding system, water jet cutting machine or other industrial system has a synthetically controlled variable displacement fluid working machine which outputs hydraulic fluid to one or more fluid consumers, such as rams or hydraulic motors, through hydraulically stiff fluid retaining volumes and receives hydraulic fluid back from one or more fluid consumers through the same or other said hydraulically stiff fluid retaining volumes. Individual piston cylinder assemblies can be allocated to different outputs. There may be no valve between the machine and the consumers. A working chamber of the machine can be caused to undergo a motoring cycle to enable the machine to output more power than is received from a motor driving the machine. An accumulator can be used to provide a source of hydraulic compliance. The machine can be controlled using pressure control, flow control, feed forward control or variable power/variable power limit control.

  • Patent number: 10180182
Abstract: A hydrokinetic torque converter including a secondary piston for purposes of enhancing operation of the lock-up feature, and the method of operating such a converter. The secondary piston moves axially behind the turbine-piston to urge respective lock-up clutch friction surfaces into phased engagement. In an initial phase of engagement, friction surfaces between the secondary piston and turbine-piston engage to begin the reduction of relative rotary motion between the converter impeller and turbine-piston. This initial phase of slowing relative movement between the impeller and turbine-piston reduces pressure within the torus and the associated fluid forces separating the friction surfaces of the lock-up clutch. The secondary piston also slows and eliminates fluid flow from within the torus past the lock-up clutch and further reduces engagement resistance of the lock-up clutch owing to the lessening fluid pressure and flow.
