    Abstract: A method for photo-hardening a silicone rubber surface, the method comprising a step (A) in which a surface of a molded silicone rubber is irradiated using, for example, a xenon excimer lamp with vacuum ultraviolet light having a wavelength of 200 nm or less at an irradiation energy in the range of 10-3,000 mJ/cm2, thereby forming an oxide layer in the irradiated portion by photooxidation and thus hardening the portion. According to the method, it is possible to harden the surface of the silicon rubber into a wear-resistant surface without causing a change in gloss and while keeping the rubbery feeling intact. It is also possible to improve the oil infiltration resistance of the rubber.

    Abstract: Some natural asphalts deposits, like those in Trinidad, Venezuela and Iraq, are thermoplastic in nature. After removing the water content, the resulting refined asphalt flows, coalesces, and its mineral matter sediments when blended with refinery bitumen. Packaged in 250 kg coated kegs and barrels, specialized road-paving plants are required for use. On the other hand, gilsonites, also a natural asphalts, are used-friendly, but performs unsatisfactorily compared with refined asphalts as a modifier of refinery bitumen for road-paving. Furthermore, refinery bitumen has been polymerized with polymers for decades. This polymerization of bitumen is used in this patent—the bitumen in these natural asphalts are polymerized with polymers to produce PMNAs which are user-friendly (discrete elements do not flow or coalesce), could be packaged in powders or pellets, could be used with conventional road-paving equipment so there is no need for specialized equipment, and saving costs to the end-user.

    Abstract: A method for producing an engineered wood material may include a matrix material and filler material. In some embodiments, a separate binder and/or adhesive is not required. The matrix and filler materials may be bio-based and/or renewable materials. The engineered wood material may be produced by compressing the mixed components together under pressure at an elevated temperature for a predetermined amount of time. An advantage of the present invention may be that such materials are easily and cheaply replenished, as opposed to non-bio-based materials which include petroleum-based or other non-renewable products in their manufacture.

    Abstract: A material and method are disclosed such that the material can be used to form functional metal pieces by producing an easily sintered layered body of dried metal paste. On a microstructural level, when dried, the metal paste creates a matrix of porous metal scaffold particles with infiltrant metal particles, which are positioned interstitially in the porous scaffold's interstitial voids. For this material to realize mechanical and processing benefits, the infiltrant particles are chosen such that they pack in the porous scaffold piece in a manner which does not significantly degrade the packing of the scaffold particles and so that they can also infiltrate the porous scaffold on heating. The method of using this paste provides a technique with high rate and resolution of metal part production due to a hybrid deposition/removal process.

    Abstract: An improved superhydrophobic coating and a process of making it is provided herein. More particularly, a robust superhydrophobic coating is produced by using carbon dioxide to enhance the integration of a binder material into the superhydrophobic coating. The carbon dioxide may be used to infiltrate and fill the interstitial voids of a superhydrophobic material, such as diatomaceous earth. Consequently, occupying these voids in the superhydrophobic material effectively blocks other components (e.g., binders) from entering the voids. As a result, the coating formulations of the present invention are more robust and may strongly adhere to the substrates to which they are applied.

    Abstract: A method for fabricating nanostructured polymeric materials based on a combination of inkjet printing and template synthesis. Layer-by-layer assembled nanotubes can be synthesized in a polycarbonate track-etched (PCTE) membrane by printing poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) sequentially. By changing the printing conditions, polymeric nanotubes or nanowires can be prepared by printing poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) in a PCTE template. Inkjet printing paired with template synthesis can be used to generate patterns comprised of chemically distinct nanomaterials. Thin polymeric films of layer-by-layer assembled PAH and PSS can be printed on a PCTE membrane. Inkjet printing paired with template synthesis can also be used to prepare functional mosaic membranes, such as charge mosaic membranes comprising polyelectrolytes of different charges to pattern positively charged or negatively-charged domains, respectively, on the surface of the template.
