Abstract: In a hybrid vehicle, suppression of an amount of fuel consumed for reducing NOx stored in an NSR catalyst and suppression of deterioration in exhaust gas components due to unreacted fuel flowing out from the NSR catalyst are made compatible with each other. Predetermined power source control is carried out in accompany with the execution of NOx reduction processing to supply fuel to the NSR catalyst. In the predetermined power source control, an engine rotation speed of an internal combustion engine is made to decrease or an operation of the internal combustion engine is made to stop, and an electric motor is controlled so as to compensate for required torque. Further, during a period of execution of the predetermined power source control, a lower limit value of a predetermined target SOC range for an SOC of a battery is changed to a value smaller than at times other than the period of execution of the predetermined power source control.

An actuator sensor measures an actuator position, and the engine controller generates a synthesized actuator position. In response to detecting a faulty actuator, a faulty actuator sensor, or both, the engine controller adjusts the position of the actuator based on the synthesized actuator position.

Abstract: An internal combustion engine in which a fuel reforming operation in a fuel reformation cylinder (2) is not executed when a gas temperature of a fuel reformation chamber (23) at a time point when a piston (22) in the fuel reformation cylinder (2) reaches a compression top dead point is estimated to fall short of a reforming operation allowable lower limit gas temperature set based on a lower limit value of a reforming reaction enabling temperature. For example, fuel is supplied from an injector (25) so that an equivalence ratio in the fuel reformation chamber (23) is less than 1. Alternatively, the fuel supply from an injector (25) is stopped. This way, a supply of non-reformed fuel from the fuel reformation cylinder (2) to an output cylinder (3) can be avoided, and knocking in the output cylinder (3) can be avoided.

Abstract: A method and system for predicting the occurrence of a knock which will have a predetermined intensity or higher (intense knock) in an engine that burns an air-fuel mixture of gasoline fuel. The pressure in a combustion chamber is detected during an initial stage of combustion. This pressure is compared with a preset reference value to determine whether or not the cylinder inner pressure exceeds the reference value during the combustion. When the cylinder inner pressure exceeds the reference value, it is predicted that the intense knock will occur before an end of the combustion. If the intense knock is predicted, additional fuel or other material can be injected into the combustion chamber to prevent the occurrence of the intense knock.

Abstract: A control device for an internal combustion engine is configured, where a designated cam switching condition is met, to execute a boost pressure control processing and an air amount control processing. In the boost pressure control processing, the control device controls a boost pressure control device such that a boost pressure control parameter does not increase in synchronization with execution of a cam switching operation and decreases in accordance with an increase of a required engine torque after the execution of the cam switching operation. In the air amount control processing, the control device controls the opening degree of a throttle valve to its closed side in synchronization with the cam switching operation such that a difference of an in-cylinder charge air amount is not produced before and after the execution of the cam switching operation.

Abstract: A method of operating an internal combustion engine of a vehicle is provided to maintain cylinder balance. A first operating mode corresponding to a steady state operation of the internal combustion engine is differentiated from a second operating mode corresponding to a transient operation of the internal combustion engine based upon a first operating parameter of the internal combustion engine. In the first operating mode, a first control strategy provides cylinder balance. In the second operating mode, a second control strategy, different than the first control strategy, provides cylinder balance. The second control strategy utilizes a dynamic factor based upon a second operating parameter of the internal combustion engine.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for characterizing aged fuel, which loses volatility over time. In one example, a method may include estimating a fuel vapor pressure during an engine cold start using a pre-determined fuel distillation curve and adjusting one or more combustion parameters based on the estimated fuel vapor pressure. Because the fuel vapor pressure directly relates to the fuel volatility, adjusting the one or more combustion parameters based on the estimated fuel vapor pressure may reduce aged fuel-related engine performance degradation, such as hesitation and emissions during cold start.
